When I first thought about writing a post on the ultimate guide to places to eat and drink in York city centre, I thought I’d maybe have around 10-15 places that I’ve personally visited and would recommend.

However, it turns out that there are tonnes of places in this ultimate foodie guide to York that I’ve visited numerous times and truly adored. I knew my obsession with food was intense but I honestly didn’t realise just how many incredible places there are to eat and drink in York!

Whether you’re looking for a scrumptious breakfast/brunch option, a decadent dinner service or you just want to grab a drink in York’s bustling bars, here’s my ultimate guide to the best places to eat and drink in York city centre!

Breakfast/Brunch – best places to eat in York city centre

Depending on what day you ask me, I think breakfast/brunch is usually my favourite meal of the day.

In my opinion, there are just so many options to choose from when eating breakfast or brunch. From sweet delicacies such as pastries, scones and cakes to hearty sandwiches or traditional brunch options such as eggs, bacon and of course, a decadent full English, there’s just so much you can do with breakfast/brunch.

With that in mind, here are all the tried and tested (by me) places for breakfast and brunch in York.

1. Brew and Brownie – best places to eat in York city centre

Brew and Brownie was a place that I wanted to visit in York for the longest time, but every time we went passed it, there were queues out of the door and down the street!

Thankfully, one day last spring, Matt and I managed to grab a table and even though I was recovering from just having my tonsils removed, I was determined to make the most out of our visit there!

Brew and Brownie offer an incredible breakfast/brunch menu including everything from a smorgasbord of egg dishes, avocado dishes and plenty of tasty sandwiches. They also have a bakeshop just two doors down from the cafe where you can purchase a vast array of indulgent desserts.

I’d recommend: Eggs Benedict, hot chocolate and a luxurious Oreo brownie!

2. Heavenly Desserts

Heavenly Desserts is one of York’s newest (and best, in my opinion!) places to eat and as the name suggests, it’s an entire restaurant dedicated solely to decadent desserts and sweet treats.

The menu is incredibly extensive and there are so many amazing cakes, chocolates, ice creams, crepes, waffles and so much more to choose from; I honestly struggled not to order absolutely everything!

Heavenly Desserts is a super cool place to eat in York if you’re looking for a menu of delicious sweet treats and a gorgeous interior.

I’d recommend: Chocolate orange cake, Biscoff Milk Cake, and strawberry Mochi.

3. Spring Espresso – best places to eat in York

Spring Espresso have two cafes in York city centre, but my personal favourite is the one on Lendal (simply because it’s so close to my house!).

It’s an incredibly cute little cafe, with views out onto the street where you can happily people-watch all day! The staff here are also so lovely and friendly and I can happily set up my laptop and spend a few hours in here.

Their menus are advertised as ‘breakfast anytime’ and ‘brunch anytime’, so you have such a vast range of delicious treats and savoury snacks to tuck into!

I’d recommend: Chorizo with scrambled egg on sourdough toast; (the hot chocolate here is also amazing).

4. Betty’s – best places to eat in York city centre

Betty’s is arguably the most iconic place to eat in York city centre. They’re renowned for their fancy afternoon tea, scrumptious cakes and desserts and lovely staff.

While grabbing a table at Betty’s can often see you queuing for quite some time (make sure to arrive much earlier than you anticipate on eating!); once inside, you’ll truly be spoiled for choice with the vast range of delicious lunch options available.

I’d recommend: The traditional afternoon tea, red pepper frittata or Caesar salad. Cakes: lemon curd torte, seasonal cheesecake, Swiss chocolate torte.

5. Osbornes @ 68

Osbornes @ 68 is another breakfast/brunch place situated at the bottom of Gillygate.

The food here is absolutely wonderful, with friendly staff and quick service; it’s definitely a place to head to at lunchtime with friends!

I’d recommend: The club sandwich or the spicy chicken and salsa wrap (and a hot chocolate, as always!).

6. Café No.8 – best brunch in York city centre

Café No.8 is another place that can be found on Gillygate and is actually a place that I only found myself eating at fairly recently.

This cutesy little bistro actually provides a breakfast, lunch and dinner menu, and while I can’t vouch for the dinner service (though I’ve heard great things about it), I can vouch for the breakfast menu!

The cafe is almost separated into two parts; the fancier dinner ‘restaurant’ at the front and an adorable conservatory-like space at the back. The staff here are also absolutely wonderful and ever so chatty.

I’d recommend: The full English breakfast, York ham ‘Benedict’ or bacon and eggs on toast.

7. York Roast Company

The York Roast Company is an incredibly popular place to eat in York, amongst both locals and tourists.

Their impressive range of meaty sandwiches, Yorkshire pudding wrap and Sunday dinner-esque meat boxes make the York Roast Co an incredibly popular place to eat. Due to its popular demand, there are now two stores in York; so you’re spoiled for choice on where to tuck into a hearty, meaty sandwich!

I’d recommend: A ham or pork sandwich with stuffing or the Yorkshire pudding meal with roast potatoes, meat, veg and lashings of gravy.

8. Partisan

Partisan is an awesome place to eat in York city centre if you’re looking for delicious breakfast food! They have such a fantastic menu and every dish is created with local, fresh produce and ingredients.

Located on York’s famous Micklegate, Partisan is one of the most highly rated breakfast places in York city centre, and with a menu boasting dishes such as French toast, Eggs Benedict and Shakshuka!

8. Patisserie Valerie – best places to eat in York city centre

Patisserie Valerie isn’t a restaurant that’s exclusive to York, but it is a great place to visit if you’re looking for delicious afternoon tea in the city centre!

As well as their famous afternoon tea, Patisserie Valerie also specialise in decadent cakes and pastries, as well as many yummy breakfast and brunch options.

10. Café 21, Fenwick

I was very kindly invited to try the afternoon tea at Café 21 at Fenwick York and it absolutely did not disappoint!

As you can probably tell from this ultimate guide of the best places to eat in York city centre so far, I’m a little obsessed with afternoon tea and the one at Café 21 is definitely one of the best in the city!

Dinner – best places to eat in York

Again, it depends on what kind of mood I’m in on the particular day you ask me but dinner is something I genuinely look forward to all day.

Whether I’m eating at home, ordering a takeaway or heading out for a fancy meal in town, I just know I’m going to have the best time.

I’m also one of those people who thoroughly scours the menu online before I go to a restaurant so I’m always prepared with at least a couple of dishes I know I want to try.

Here are my favourite places to eat in York city centre for dinner!

11. Cosy Club

I’ve honestly lost count of the number of times I’ve raved about Cosy Club on my blog and Instagram, but it truly is my favourite place to eat in York city centre!

Cosy Club has such a vast array of choices on their menus; from salads to sandwiches, to tapas and burgers, Cosy Club really have thought of it all when it comes to their extensive menu. Not only that but it’s also got the most amazing interior and decor and is without a doubt my number-one recommendation of cool places to eat and drink in York!

I’d recommend: (ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING!), but namely the steak or club sandwich and the chicken and chorizo, garlic mushrooms and popcorn bacon from the tapas menu. The pink lemonade here is also heavenly.

12. Lucia – best places to eat in York city centre

Lucia is tucked away in the cute little corner of Swinegate and reminds me somewhat of al fresco dining when you’re on holiday.

While you naturally don’t have to sit outside, I would definitely recommend doing so in the summer when there’s an abundance of blankets, outdoor heaters and such a wonderful atmosphere to enjoy.

I’d recommend: The pork belly and chorizo sausage or the pollo pizza.

13. Thor’s Tipi York

Unfortunately, Thor’s Tipi is a seasonal event in York, so you can only really find it during the summer and winter months.

However, if you do head to the summer event at The Principal Hotel, you can find a vast array of delicious dishes served by local catering companies such as Hog and Apple and The Shambles Kitchen.

In the winter, Thor’s Tipi is usually held in Parliament Street and here you’ll find winter classics such as mulled wine and cider, plus cosy fire pits and sumptuous hot chocolates.

14. Slug and Lettuce – best places to eat in York city centre

Of course, Slug and Lettuce isn’t exclusive to York, but it’s my favourite branch that I’ve been to across the country and it’s a place that I love to revisit when I’m eating out in York time and again.

My most recent visit to Slug and Lettuce was for bottomless brunch with my friend for her birthday and a lunchtime of sipping bottomless prosecco and devouring a hearty Full English Breakfast meant that it had to come straight to my list of favourite restaurants in York city centre.

I’d recommend: Full English breakfast with Bottomless Brunch, garlic breaded mushrooms (starter) and southern-fried chicken wrap.

15. The Botanist

The Botanist is a great place to both eat and drink in York as it has such an extensive cocktail menu, as well as great foodie options, too.

I’ve been to The Botanist on several different occasions, both with Matt, my friends and old work colleagues for our Christmas party last year and it’s delivered beyond my expectations every single time.

I’d recommend: Lamb kofta or chicken hanging kebabs (SO good) or the crispy chicken burger. Some of my favourite cocktails include strawberry and cucumber breeze and the strawberry and elderflower bellini.

16. Döner Summer – vegan food in York

Döner Summer is another relatively new York restaurant and it’s totally vegan! Despite not being a full-time veggie or vegan, I do try and make more veggie/vegan choices when I can and so I was excited to try out Döner Summer and I certainly wasn’t disappointed!

I’d recommend: Buttermylk Fried Chick’n.

17. Ambiente

Ambiente is another restaurant in York that’s probably in my top 5 places of all time to eat. It’s essentially a tapas restaurant (there are actually 2 in York) and is home to some of the most incredible, authentic tapas dishes you’ll ever eat!

As I said, there are two Ambiente restaurants in York city centre, but I’d definitely recommend the one on Fossgate much more as it has a more extensive menu with lots more delicious dishes!

I’d recommend: Beef and pork meatballs, patatas bravas, chorizo and potatoes, crispy pork belly, calamari rings, plus so much more!

18. The Cut and Craft – best places to eat in York city centre

The Cut and Craft is another fairly recent finding of ours and even though it hasn’t been open for too long, it’s made quite a scene amongst foodies in York city centre.

While its main premise focuses on steak, The Cut and Craft also offer an array of other remarkably tasty dishes that I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to you! If you’re looking for a restaurant that has one of the best atmospheres in York, amazing food and drink, as well as some of the friendly and fastest service, make sure you head to The Cut and Craft!

One thing to note, however; you can’t actually book a table here, so you just have to turn up and hope for the best! We went on a Saturday night once and were waiting around 45 minutes for a table. Whereas my mum and I went on a Friday afternoon a couple of weeks ago and walked straight in so it really depends on the day/time you visit!

They also offer an incredible Sunday lunch which is well worth getting out of bed for!

I’d recommend: The £10 flat iron steak with peppercorn sauce (seriously THE best sauce I’ve ever had!) and the pork belly or calamari starter.

19. The Ivy

You may have heard of The Ivy restaurant in London ; the one in York is very similar and offers luxury food in an opulent setting.

Located right next to Betty’s in St. Helen’s Square, The Ivy has become the trendy new place to eat in York. While it’s certainly not the most affordable place to eat in York, you will find a vast range of incredible dishes here, including yummy starters and rich, chocolatey desserts!

I’d recommend: Fish and chips, lamb or minute steak and the mini chocolate truffles for dessert.

20. Stonegate Yard

Stonegate Yard is a place that I’ve been eating at ever since I was a young teenager and went out for meals with my friends.

It has such a cosy and homey vibe to it and I’ve eaten there many times, both inside and in the heated outdoor patio area.

I’d recommend: Nachos, gammon and eggs, fish and chips or the steak flatbread.

21. Skosh – best places to eat in York city centre

Skosh is one of the most prestigious restaurants in York city centre and it’s definitely not the cheapest place to eat (their multiple course tasting menu costs around £100 for two people), but it is a dining experience worth doing in York!

The small plates tasting menu changes frequently depending on seasonality and availability, so it’s difficult to recommend certain dishes as they change quite often, but if you get the chance to visit Skosh, I promise it will be worth it!

22. La Vecchia Scuola

I had wanted to visit La Vecchia Scuola for such a long time before I finally visited in the summer of 2023 and it certainly didn’t disappoint!

The food here is absolutely delicious, but it’s the stunning setting of the restaurant that will make you want to visit La Vecchia Scuola!

23. Pho York

Despite spending 3 months in Vietnam in total over the last few years, I’m still not the biggest fan of most Vietnamese dishes, unfortunately, but if you are a fan of classic dishes such as pho, then you need to pay a visit to Pho York!

The outdoor terrace at Pho York is truly stunning and it makes for a great date night spot in York in the summer months.

24. Rad Pizza Shop – best places to eat in York city centre

Rad Pizza Shop might just be the best Neapolitan pizza place in the whole of York! They’re based at Spark (one of my absolute favourite places in York for food and drink!) and every single one of their pizzas is worth eating (honestly, I’ve sampled them all!).

The “no meat ndjua” pizza is my go-to, but the Calbrese carne is also absolutely incredible!

25. Sasa Greek Street Food

If you’re a fan of Greek food, be sure to add Sasa Greek Street Food to your list of the best places to eat in York city centre.

After spending a month in Paphos, Cyprus and eating so much delicious Greek food, I didn’t think I would be able to find anything that compared in my hometown of York, but Sasa Greek Street Food comes pretty close!

26. Clucking Oinks

Clucking Oinks are pretty famous in York for their insane burgers, fried chicken and loaded fries and after eating there a few too many times over the years, I am very confident in including them in my guide to the best restaurants in York city centre!

The confit garlic fries and the Big Cluck burger are my usual go-to on the menu.

27. Yuzu Street Food

If you’re looking for yummy Asian-fusion cuisine in York city centre, look no further than Yuzu Street Food.

With scrumptious dishes such as gyozas, Katsu curries and bao buns on the menu, you really can’t go wrong with a meal at Yuzu!

28. Manahatta – best places to eat in York city centre

Manahatta is one of my favourite places in York for bottomless brunch, but it also has an excellent regular brunch and dinner menu, too.

It’s also a great place to visit on an evening if you’re looking for an awesome cocktail bar where you can dance the night away.

29. The Star Inn The City

For one of the best fine dining restaurants in York city centre, head to The Star Inn The City. It’s certainly not the cheapest place to eat in York, but it is one of the most beautiful restaurants situated right on the River Ouse, with so many delicious dishes on the menu.

30. Bill’s

Bill’s is another restaurant that’s not exclusive to York, but the city centre branch of Bill’s is definitely somewhere you should consider eating at!

I particularly love the breakfast/brunch menu, but I’ve also eaten there for dinner on multiple occasions and it never disappoints!

31. Los Moros

Los Moros is a North African restaurant that has two locations in York; one street food pop-up in the Shambles Market and an official restaurant on Grape Lane.

The food at Los Moros is truly delicious and it’s a dining experience that you’re sure to love if you enjoy dishes such as shakshouka, tagine, and mezze.

32. Sora Sky Bar

If you’re looking for a drinking and dining experience with excellent views, look no further than Sora Sky Bar at the top of the Malmaison Hotel in York.

Specialising in Asian-fusion cuisine and small plates designed to be shared, as well as boasting an epic drinks menu, Sora is a fantastic dining option in York city centre for a special occasion.

Bars/pubs/clubs – places to eat and drink in York

York is famed for its eclectic nightlife scene; from traditional pubs dating all the way back to the Romans and Vikings, as well as more trendy clubs where you can dance the night away!

Since I started going out in York city centre, I’ve discovered some of the very best bars, pubs and clubs in York; all with their own unique charm and quality!

P.S. It’s important to bear in mind that drink prices in York certainly don’t come cheap (although they’re still more affordable than London prices, so swings and roundabouts, I guess!).

33. Kennedy’s – places to eat and drink in York

I had to start with Kennedy’s as it’s mine and Matt’s favourite place in the whole of York (potentially even the world!) when it comes to a night out.

During the day you’ll find it set up as a restaurant with delicious food, but at night it’s transformed into an 80s dreamland! The ‘Kennedy’s DJ’ plays some of the best 80s, 90s and noughties music you’ll ever find in a club.

There’s been many a night where I haven’t gone anywhere apart from Kennedy’s as the atmosphere really is just exhilarating and so much fun!

Update – Kennedy’s is no longer operating as a nightclub and instead is more of a restaurant/casual bar.

34. Banyan

Banyan is a great place to go in York if you’re looking for a slightly more chilled vibe, but still with plenty of cocktails. I absolutely love the interior of Banyan and it’s a perfect place to go with friends, work colleagues or even just as a couple!

35. House of the Trembling Madness

The House of the Trembling Madness is one of the most fun and quirky places to eat in York.

The original Trembling Madness is much smaller and has a very odd charm to it, whereas the newly refurbished one is much bigger and has a classier vibe to it; it also has a shop downstairs where you can purchase your drinks for a fraction of the price and then take them upstairs to drink in the bar/restaurant!

Whichever one you visit, you’re sure to delight in its weirdness and enjoy wonderfully crafted drinks.

36. Evil Eye – best pubs in York city centre

Whenever you ask people for recommendations of places to eat and drink in York, you’ll nearly always hear the response “Evil Eye“. It’s home to one of the largest collections of gins you’ll ever see; and it also has a shop at the front of the bar where you can purchase weird and wonderful gins to take home with you!

37. Dusk – places to eat and drink in York

Dusk always reminds me somewhat of Evil Eye as it has a quirky and unique vibe to it. I’ve had many a night out that ended with drinks in Dusk and there’s also an elusive magician that often pops in to perform magic tricks right in front of you; it’s even more impressive when you’re quite a few cocktails in!

The cocktails also have the coolest names including the ‘Phil Collins’, ‘Graham Norton’ (a personal favourite of mine) and the ‘Britney Spears’.

38. Bora Bora

Bora Bora is one of the best places for cocktails in York. It has such a lovely tropical vibe to it and even though the inside area is ridiculously small, you can enjoy standing outside at any time of year due to the vast amount of heaters and blankets!

They do all the traditional cocktails starting from £5, including my favourites ‘Sex on the beach’, ‘Cosmopolitan’ and ‘Woo woo’. You can also get a sharing pitcher for £17.95.

39. Turtle Bay

Turtle Bay is a Caribbean restaurant and bar that comes alive at night. While I’ve never eaten here, I have drank one too many cocktails in Turtle Bay and can assure you that it comes highly recommended!

They also have happy hour almost every single night from 7 pm to 10 pm (I think!) where you can get 2-4-1 on all the same cocktails!

I’d recommend: strawberry daiquiri, reggae rum punch and funky Kingston.

40. Valhalla – best places to eat in York

Valhalla is York’s only traditional Viking pub and just being there is an entire experience in itself! You’ll find people drinking strong, strange ales and mead out of a real Viking drinking horn!

They do also serve regular beers, lagers and spirits as well, but no cocktails, unfortunately!

41. Ye Olde Starre Inn

You’ll find some of the best pub food at Ye Olde Starre Inn, as well as a lovely and cosy atmosphere.

It’s believed to be the oldest licensed pub in the entirety of York and it has such an incredibly authentic and historic vibe to it!

42. Stone Roses

The Stone Roses Bar has a unique and quirky Britpop theme to it and is a popular place amongst people of all ages.

The area of the bar is pretty huge and there’s even an upstairs balcony where you can enjoy dancing, drinking and playing pool. They’re also famous for their creation of ‘Blue Shit’; a mixture of vodka, lemonade and Blue WKD that’s sure to fill you full of party juice!

43. Kuda – best places to eat in York

If you’re looking for a proper nightclub where you can dance and rave all night long, then Kuda is the place to be.

It has a sizeable dancefloor, DJ and even VIP party booths upstairs (this is where I had my surprise 18th birthday but I had horrific tonsillitis at the time!).

44. Jalou

When Matt and I first got together and started going out in York, Jalou was actually still called Parish.

It’s housed in an old church which still seems so strange to me, even now, but it’s also one of the most popular places to be in York on a Friday and Saturday night.

45. Pavement Vaults

Pavement Vaults is yet another one of the best places to eat and drink in York as it serves a hearty selection of both yummy food and alcoholic beverages and is a great place to enjoy a more intimate drink with friends, family or your partner.

There’s a small downstairs area with comfortable booths that’s great if you want to be a little more removed from the hustle and bustle of the bar upstairs.

46. The Golden Fleece – best places to eat in York city centre

The Golden Fleece is cited as the most haunted pub in York (and I think in the UK!) and has even been featured on the TV programme ‘Most Haunted’.

While I’ve personally never experienced anything spooky while visiting The Golden Fleece, I can vouch for its historic and slightly eerie vibe!

47. Lendal Cellars

Lendal Cellars is a place that’s slightly hidden away, complete with a fascinating bricked archway in its interior.

The Cellars can often get a little fusty-smelling but it really feels like you’re having a drink in ye olde times when visiting Lendal Cellars!

The Fat Badger (formerly The Lamb and Lion) is famous for its sizeable beer garden with the most amazing views in York. You can see both the York Minster and the City Walls when in the beer garden!

The inside part of the pub is also old and traditional and feels like a quintessentially British pub.

49. The Roman Bath

The Roman Bath is an incredibly unusual and intriguing pub in York as it’s built upon an ancient Roman Bath House; providing it with its very apt name!

While it may look like an ancient pub that’s seen better days, on a Friday and Saturday night, the Roman Bath is absolutely teeming with people; you’ll also often find various gigs being played here!
