After more than seven years of travelling (pretty much full-time!), my husband and I moved to Manchester in May 2026 as we were craving a bit more stability and routine (and we were desperate not to live out of a 12kg backpack anymore!).
Having said that, just because we’re no longer on the road full-time, doesn’t mean to say that travelling isn’t still a huge part of our lives (I’ve been a travel blogger for 10+ years now, so it’s very integral to my job!).
However, instead of year-long trips through multiple countries and cities around the world, we’ve been focusing more on exploring places closer to our new home, and in my guide below, I’ve shared some of our favourite places for a UK weekend break from Manchester.
All of the places featured below can be easily reached from Manchester by car (and most by train!) in under four hours (with the exception of Pembrokeshire!).

I have personally tried and tested all of these UK weekend breaks from Manchester, and they’re all fantastic destinations for different reasons. Whether you’re travelling by train or car, each of the following places are perfect for a weekend getaway from Manchester!
1. Peak District
Best day trips from Manchester ~ 40 minutes
The Peak District is one of the top destinations to visit from Manchester as it can be reached in just 40 minutes by car (depending on exactly where you’re travelling to/from).
Therefore, it also makes it one of the best places for day trips from Manchester by train, as you can easily travel from Manchester Piccadilly to places like Edale, Hope, and Buxton, all within one hour.
2. Liverpool
Best UK weekend breaks from Manchester for couples ~ 1 hour
Liverpool is one of the best city breaks in the UK, regardless of where you’re travelling from, but it’s definitely one of the best places for a weekend break from Manchester as you can get there via train or car in just one hour.
It’s one of my favourite UK cities for couples as there are so many awesome places to eat, and, of course, it’s got an incredible nightlife (if that’s your kind of thing!). There’s also so much to see and do, and so much amazing culture to experience, including activities such as a sightseeing cruise on the River Mersey, visiting The Beatles Story Museum and the world-famous Cavern Club!
3. Chester
Best UK weekend breaks from Manchester by train ~ 1 hour
I personally think that Chester is one of the most underrated cities in the UK, and as it’s only an hour away by train from Manchester, it’s the perfect place to visit for a romantic weekend break.
While I think Chester is absolutely gorgeous and worth visiting all year-round, I think it’s arguably best enjoyed during the autumn or winter months as it feels particularly cosy and festive.
One of my favourite things to do in Chester is take a walking food tour around the city as there are so many incredible places to eat and drink, and a walking food tour is the perfect way to sample the city’s best food while learning about the history of Chester!
4. Lancashire
Best cheap weekend breaks from Manchester ~ 1 hour
Home to numerous coastal towns such as Blackpool , Fleetwood, and Morecambe, as well as the Forest of Bowland National Landscape, Lancashire is another place that you should consider visiting on a weekend break from Manchester.
It’s quick and easy to get to as you can drive into the Forest of Bowland/Ribble Valley in less than 90 minutes, and you can also get to Blackpool in just over an hour by car or train.
5. Wrexham
Best UK weekend breaks from Manchester for families ~ 1 hour 10 minutes
I only recently discovered Wrexham and I was blown away by how much there is to see and do there on a weekend break from Manchester, not just in the city centre, but in the whole of Wrexham county.
Wrexham has gained worldwide fame in recent years due to the immense growth of its football team, but I had no idea there were also so many amazing historic and culturally significant places, including Erdigg Country House and Estate, Chirk Castle, and the remarkable Pontcysyllte Aqueduct!
If you’re looking for one of the best and most underrated weekend breaks from Manchester, definitely add Wrexham to your list!
6. Lake District
Best romantic weekend breaks from Manchester ~ 1 hour 30 minutes
The Lake District is by far one of my most visited places in the UK as I grew up visiting the likes of Windermere, Bowness, Keswick, and Ambleside as a child, and then my family moved to Penrith and subsequently Carlisle, so it’s safe to say that I’ve spent a lot of time there over the years!
Public transport to and around the Lake District is pretty limited, so it’s definitely best explored by car, and while I have done several campervan road trips around the Lake District, if you’re visiting for just the weekend, I would opt for a holiday home or guest house in one location and use that as your base to travel from.
This cosy colourful cottage in Cockermouth is the perfect base for a weekend break from Manchester to explore the Lake District as it’s just a 20-minute drive from Keswick, a 40-minute drive from Ullswater, and a 1-hour drive from Ambleside and Bowness-on-Windermere.
7. Yorkshire
Best city breaks from Manchester ~ 1 hour 40 minutes
While I no longer call Yorkshire home or even have a base there anymore, it will always have a super special place in my heart as it’s where I spent the vast majority of my life, first being born in Doncaster, and then moving to York at the age of eight.
It truly is one of the most amazing counties in England, with incredible cities such as York, Leeds , Sheffield, Hull, Bradford, and Huddersfield all less than two hours from Manchester by train, as well as plenty of seaside destinations such as Scarborough, Filey, Whitby, and Bridlington all accessible by car in less than three hours.
There are so many gorgeous holiday cottages in Yorkshire that make for the perfect base for your weekend break from Manchester.
Whether you opt for a place close to towns and cities such as Malton or Skipton, or you’d prefer to find a holiday cottage closer to the beach, there’s no denying that Yorkshire has so much to offer when it comes to a lovely weekend escape from Manchester.
8. Oxford
Best weekend trips from Manchester by train ~ 3 hours
Oxford is one of the most beautiful cities in the UK and is abundantly rich with culture, history, and heritage, as well as a fantastic food and drink scene.
While it might be more synonymous with being a student city, Oxford is also a brilliant place for a weekend break from Manchester as you can get there via car or train in just three hours.
I personally love a weekend break in Oxford in the autumnal months as the city transforms into the most beautiful and colourful place, but it truly is an idyllic place to visit all year-round.
9. Northumberland
Best for outdoors weekend breaks from Manchester ~ 3 hours 20 minutes
One of my favourite ways to experience Northumberland is to stay in a cute and cosy cottage in places like Alnwick, Bamburgh, or Beadnell, and then explore the national park and surrounding places from there.
There is so much to see and do in Northumberland, and even though I’ve spent many weekends there, it’s one of those places that just never gets old for me.
10. Pembrokeshire
Best for a coastal weekend break from Manchester ~ 5 hours
I absolutely adore a Wales road trip, and I could quite happily spend weeks at a time leisurely exploring this spectacular region of the UK, but as this guide is about the best weekend trips from Manchester, I decided to include the Pembrokeshire Coast in this lineup as it truly is one of the most breathtaking coastal regions in the country.
It is the furthest place for a weekend getaway from Manchester in this guide, as it’ll take you around five hours to drive there (and is pretty much completely inaccessible by train from Manchester), but I still think it’s 100% worth visiting, especially if you can plan a long weekend break to make the most of your time there.
I would suggest booking a holiday cottage right on the coast so that you can soak up the best of what the region has to offer, and as it’s not a huge place, you can easily drive around and see the top sights in a couple of days.
