Whether you’re a fan of Valentine’s Day or not, the love it or hate it holiday is slowing creeping up on us. If you’re someone to leave gift purchasing to the very last minute, then this post of 18 experience gift ideas for couples is for you!
As much as I’ve always loved receiving materialistic and physical gifts, in my opinion, there’s really nothing more amazing than receiving an experience gift.
With Matt and I preparing for our trip around the world and trying to minimise as many of our belongings as possible, it got me thinking about alternative gift ideas. We also both turn 21 just before we go travelling as well, so this extensive post of 18 experience gift ideas will come in handy for both of us, and hopefully for you guys too!
Experience gift ideas for couples
A spa day is definitely one of the best experience gift ideas for couples, especially if you’ve both got busy schedules and you struggle to take proper time out for yourselves.
You don’t have to spend a fortune on a spa day either; there are many affordable hotels who offer spa days, as well as your local beauty salon. Get your SO and head for a day of pampering and preening; you certainly won’t regret it!
Hot air balloon ride
While a hot air balloon ride might be one of the more expensive experience gift ideas for couples, it’s also one that will create memories to be treasured forever.
A hot air balloon ride would make for the perfect experience gift as it’s romantic, unique and will allow you to spend some quality time together while enjoying spectacular views.
Afternoon tea is without a doubt one of my favourite kind of dates to go on. Whether it’s with Matt, my mum or even my grandma, afternoon tea is something that can be enjoyed regardless of whether you’re in a relationship.
It’s also one of the more affordable experience gift ideas on this list, but that doesn’t mean to say that it’ll fail to put a smile on your partner’s face!
Cocktail making class
If you’re a couple who’s into your booze; whether that’s sipping cider on a summer’s afternoon in a beer garden, or if you like to be a bit more hands-on when it comes to boozing, attending a cocktail making class together will be fun and romantic!
Try your hand at being the next Tom Cruise in Cocktail and put your new skills to use at home, where you can try and recreate any recipes that you learned!
Oftentimes, one of the best gifts you can give someone is simply spending some quality time together. With life’s many demands such as work, maintaining a social life, looking after your home and keeping yourself fit and healthy, it can sometimes be difficult to squeeze in some much-needed quality time together.
This Valentine’s Day, why not treat your SO to a romantic weekend break? You don’t have to spend hundreds of pounds on a European break; simply a night or two away in a local city will be more than sufficient in allowing you to spend time together.
Broadway show or comedy show
This particular gift experience idea isn’t something that I would personally go for, but if your partner is a huge fan of theatre or comedy shows, then tickets to see their favourite performance is sure to land you in their good books!
You could even make a weekend of it, and tie it in with a weekend break to the city where the show is being performed! Two gifts rolled into one? Sounds perfect to me!
A movie and takeaway night at home
If you’re on a budget but still want to provide your partner with a lovely date night, then a simple movie and takeaway night at home will do the job.
As much as I love getting out and exploring new cities, trying new restaurants and indulging in incredible experiences, I often find that I prefer just a simple date night at home with a great movie and an indulgent takeaway. You could even go as far as to build your own little den, complete with snacks, films and plenty of cosy cushions!
Tour of a city landmark or attraction
Similarly to a weekend break, you don’t have to spend a fortune on this particular gift. While of course it would be lovely to jet off somewhere exotic to go and experience a tour of a world-renowned city or attraction, you can find some of the best tours right on your doorstep.
If you’re not keen on venturing too far out either, why not stay and explore your hometown? Matt and I have done this numerous times in our hometown of York, and we always find ourselves discovering something we’ve never seen before!
Foodie tour of your hometown
One of my Christmas presents from Matt was this Uniquely Local Hidden Gems Food Tour of York.
We haven’t actually done it yet as we’re saving it for a time closer to our birthdays but I really can’t wait to embark on it. A foodie tour of your hometown can be a great way to get out and explore your local city, all the while experiencing some new cuisines and restaurants that you might not have discovered otherwise!

A plane ticket
If you’re looking to really push the boat out with your experience gift ideas and truly splash the cash then there’s no better gift than the gift of flight.
Whether it’s a plane ticket to somewhere more affordable in Europe such as Prague or Budapest, or you’re looking for a more extravagant trip to New York, I can guarantee that a plane ticket will be one of the best gifts you can give someone.
A day at a theme park
One of my favourite ever date related memories is when Matt and I took the day off work and headed to Flamingo Land for the whole day.
It was the height of summer so it was incredibly busy but I just remember how much fun we had and I’d definitely love to head to another theme park with him again soon!
If you’re the type of couple who seeks adrenaline and loves rides, then a day at a theme park would make for the perfect experience gift!
Get a tattoo together
Getting a tattoo might not be to everyone’s taste but if you are the type of couple who likes to get inked, then why not go and get tattoos together?
You don’t necessarily have to get matching ones – Matt and I have been to get tattoos together on several occasions and not all of them are matching!
Football stadium tour
Again, this probably isn’t something that I’d particularly want to do, but I know it’s something that Matt would love so it’d be a great gift idea for him!
If your partner is a particularly strong supporter of a football team, then why not book them tickets to embark on a football stadium tour of their favourite team? Even if you’re not the biggest fan of football, you’re still sure to love the look on your partner’s face when they get to see where their childhood heroes play football!
A surprising fact about Matt and I is that we’ve never been to a proper gig together! While we both have slightly different tastes in music, I’m sure that attending a gig or a music festival together would be so much fun!
You could even make a weekend out of it and head to the likes of Leeds Fest or Parklife; whatever you choose, you’re sure to have lots of fun getting drunk and singing to your favourite songs with your partner!
Skydiving or bungee jumping
For the thrill-seeking couples, one of the most exciting experience gift ideas would be to go skydiving or bungee jumping together.
While I’ve done paragliding before, I’ve never been skydiving or bungee jumping and it’s one of the things that I’m most excited for when we go travelling.
However, you don’t have to be in a faraway destination to enjoy the likes of skydiving; there are many places all over the UK that cater to adrenaline junkies!
Romantic dinner at home or at your favourite restaurant
I’m sure you’re all aware by now just how much I adore trying out new foods and eating at my favourite restaurants, but I also love cooking at home.
It’s something that I’ve only got into more recently but Matt and I love cooking together and creating a delicious meal at home.
Of course, going out to eat at your favourite restaurant makes for the perfect date night, but if you’re pressed for time or you’re wanting to save money, then indulging in a romantic dinner at home makes for a wonderful date night idea.
Recreate your first date
Whether you jetted off to Paris on your first date, or you just spent the evening at your local cinema, that experience will be tailored to you and is sure to hold some of your most special memories.
A great way to give your partner a truly unique and romantic experience gift is to recreate your first date. It’ll be incredibly special to you and will allow you to spend quality time together while reflecting back on your relationship.
Wine tasting or brewery tour
Similarly to the idea of a cocktail making class, if you’re looking for something booze-related without the hands-on experience of cocktail making, then a wine tasting or brewery tour might be better suited to you and your partner.
There are plenty of brewery tours located all across the country, and you may even find one in your hometown; meaning you can stay close to home while sampling some of the brewery’s finest beers and lagers!
I thoroughly enjoyed writing this post of 18 experience gift ideas for couples, and I truly hope that you enjoyed it too and found lots of inspiration! Whether it’s for Valentine’s Day, or you’re just looking for a more exciting Saturday night date idea, I hope this post has given you plenty of ideas!
