The Ultimate Guide To Sziget Festival 2023 - Everything You Need To Know

Sziget Festival 2022 marked my first-ever festival and let me tell you, what a way to commence my festival-frequenting!

It was a six-day, fun-filled crazy experience that was both utterly incredible and exhausting! As my experience is still relatively fresh in my mind, I wanted to create this ultimate guide to Sziget Festival for 2025 and beyond, which includes everything you need to know about attending this awesome festival in Budapest!

In my ultimate guide to Sziget Festival 2025 below, I’ve put together my top tips for visiting Sziget, including where to stay, how to get there, the best things to do at Sziget, and where to eat. If you’re thinking of attending Sziget Festival for the first time, here’s everything you need to know!

Where is Sziget Festival 2025?

Sziget Festival is held annually in the Hungarian capital city of Budapest. The festival is actually held on Óbuda Island, which is just a little out of the city centre.

The island is approximately a 15-minute drive from the Hungarian Parliament Building, a 20-minute drive from Fisherman’s Bastion and around 13 minutes from the Széchenyi Chain Bridge. Of course, during the festival days, the traffic can get pretty busy driving to and from the city centre, so I’d highly recommend staying as close to the island as possible (or indeed, on the island if you fancy camping!).

How to get to Sziget

If you are planning to stay closer to the city centre of Budapest, you’ll be glad to know that there are various ways to get to Sziget Festival on Óbuda Island.

The best and often the easiest way to get to and from the festival is by train (or HÉV, also known as the suburban railway). The H5 train leaves from Batthyány tér or Margit híd every 15-20 minutes. You’ll need to get off at the stop called Filatorigát which drops you almost right outside the island and from there, it’s a 15-minute walk onto the island to the Festival.

Just follow the masses of people heading towards the huge bridge each day and you won’t miss it!

Accommodation/camping options at Sziget

When it comes to accommodation options at Sziget, you have a few possibilities to make your festival experience as simple and convenient as possible. Below, I’ve included a few accommodation/camping options that you can take a look at.

Hostels – the ultimate guide to Sziget Festival 2025

As it was my first ever festival, I wasn’t very keen on the idea of camping, so we stayed at the Márton Áron Hostel, which is a 20-minute walk from the island and festival. This hostel is actually located inside a college dorm, but during the festival season, you can book a room here for the entire duration of Sziget.

We paid €559 (approx £490) for the two of us for 6 nights, plus we had to provide a €180 (approx £158) deposit and a local tax of 500 HUF (approx £1.10) per person per night. We received the deposit back when we checked out of the hostel.

As the “hostel” is a college dorm facility, the rooms are very basic, with just single beds lined up next to each other and most rooms have a shared bathroom. We shared with two girls in their early twenties who were very noisy and very messy in the bathroom. The rooms were super basic and insanely warm, especially on a night; I’d recommend bringing a fan with you or heading to the local Aldi or Lidl store to buy one for around £10 as I cannot stress how hot it was in there!

However, I much preferred this option as opposed to camping, especially as it was my first festival experience and the camping at Sziget didn’t look too much fun to me!

Camping – the ultimate guide to Sziget Festival 2025

When you buy a 6-day pass, 3-day pass or day tickets (at least for two consecutive days) to Sziget, you can take advantage of free basic camping almost anywhere around the festival (as long as it’s not too near the stages or tents).

Basic camping is obviously desirable for many people as it’s completely free. However, I cannot stress enough just how dusty the island is, especially if it hasn’t rained for weeks (this happened when we went to Sziget in 2022!), so the tents around the festival were so unbelievably dirty and dusty by the end of the second day, nevermind after six whole days!

Of course, you also have to bear in mind that you’ll be camping right next to the action of the festival, which is awesome in some ways as you don’t have to travel too far to see the acts, but it also means that it’ll be super loud and busy!

There are also several other camping options to choose from, including Siesta Camping, Chill Camping, Superstar Camping, Caravan Camping, and more. These are all paid-for camping facilities and they range enormously in price depending on when you purchase the tickets and what type of camping facility you choose.

Furthermore, there are also wooden huts, glamping tents, pre-pitched tents, and more to choose from if you want your Sziget Festival experience to be a bit more luxurious and fancy!

Hotels in Budapest – the ultimate guide to Sziget Festival 2025

If you don’t fancy camping or staying in a hostel, you can find a hotel in Budapest that isn’t affiliated with the festival. This option will likely be the most expensive, but if you book a hotel well in advance of the festival, you might be able to find a good deal.

Remember, though, if you stay in the city centre of Budapest, you will have to make your way to the festival via public transport such as the train or Bolt (the ride-sharing app available in Budapest).

This ultimate guide to Sziget Festival wouldn’t be complete without a full list and itinerary of the best things to do at the festival!

Below, I’ve put together my complete list of the best things to do at Sziget Festival 2025.

Of course, the festival changes each year, so all of these activities and stages might not be relevant to each and every year at Sziget, but hopefully you’ll get a good feel of the best things to do there!

Music – stages and tents at Sziget

Of course, the music is the main attraction at Sziget Festival and you’re in for a real treat when attending this epic festival in Budapest as there are literally hundreds of artists, performers and acts to enjoy.

There are various stages and tents, with the Main Stage obviously being the main hub for the “most famous” artists, but there are also so many other stages and tents where people perform. Check out some of the best tents and stages at Sziget below.

As well as seeing all the awesome acts and performers, there are tonnes of other fun things to do at Sziget.

From the island’s very own beach to a funfair complete with magicians and circus performers, plus so much more, you’ll struggle to be bored at Sziget!

Sziget beach

The beach at Sziget isn’t exactly a relaxing, sandy beach that rivals those found in the Greek islands, but it is a super cool place to hang out on the island and there are plenty of bars and other activities to partake in at the beach.

Daily yoga and meditation sessions are held at Sziget beach, as well as musicians who prefer to perform for a smaller, more chilled-out audience.

Travelling funfair

The funfair was one of my favourite areas of the festival and the magician who performed there at the 2022 festival was absolutely incredible! There are also a few different fairground rides to enjoy here, as well as various other acts and performers, making this such a cool place to hang out!

Ferris Wheel

The Ferris Wheel is such a prominent feature of Sziget and you can see it from so many places around the island.

We decided to take a ride on it on the last night of the festival which seemed cute and romantic at first, but I think it’s actually better to ride the wheel within the first few days of the festival as the view was so clouded with dust and dirt after six whole days that it didn’t look quite as good!

It was around £10 each and we went around four times which was totally unexpected and I definitely think it was worth the money! It’s so cool to see the festival from such a high vantage point.

Before I Die…

The Before I Die wall is a really cool installation at Sziget. The idea behind it is to create a communal bucket list for all the festival-goers and there were thousands of notes written on the wall in chalk.

Even if you don’t want to add anything to it yourself, I’d still recommend going and having a nosey at all the lovely things people have written.

Samsung Gaming Dome

We only discovered the Samsung Gaming Dome on the last day of the festival and I wish we’d found it sooner because they host multiple quizzes each day and you can win some really cool prizes!

There are also several video game machines to play with inside the tent, plus the chance to discover the latest tech from Samsung.

Cirque du Sziget

At Cirque du Sziget, you’ll find dozens of circus performers putting on a show throughout the day and it’s worth venturing past occasionally to see what’s going on.

Magic Mirror

The Magic Mirror tent was actually the coolest (in terms of temperature!) place at the whole festival as it was the only air-conditioned place on the island!

There are various events hosted inside and outside the tent, including several talks and competitions, as well as music and dance performances.

The best places to eat at Sziget Festival

When it comes to eating at a festival, many people are worried that they’ll have to spend a small fortune on food and while this is often the case at many festivals around the world, I didn’t find the food at Sziget to be too extortionately priced.

There were a few stalls that were insanely expensive for what they offered, but we managed to find decent-sized and delicious meals for between £6-£12 each. A slice of pizza was around £3, fish and chips were around £8 and a burger was around £8-£10, depending on where you got it from.

There are dozens of food stalls dotted around the festival and there are so many awesome choices of meals to suit all kinds of dietary requirements and preferences.

Alcohol at Sziget was another concern of mine (which is why we took pre-mixed drinks to the festival every day – more on that below!), but I couldn’t believe just how affordable it was!

A large glass of wine was around £3.50 and beer was around £2. Cocktails and spirits were much more expensive at around £8-£10, but wine and beer were so reasonably priced which really shocked me!

Below, I’ve listed some of my favourite places to eat at Sziget so you know which food stalls to look out for!

The ultimate guide to Sziget Festival – top tips

Make sure to spend plenty of time exploring during the day, as well as at night as there are so many awesome things going on long before the music starts on an evening.
Bring toilet paper/tissues, wipes and hand gel to stay clean.
The food is relatively expensive but alcohol isn’t too extortionately priced.
Go and see the acts that sound good as you walk nearby, not just the famous ones; you’ll discover some truly awesome acts that you’ve never even heard of!
Eat lots of food – you’ll be burning tonnes of calories by dancing and sweating in the heat, so make sure you eat often to keep your energy up.
Avoid the food stalls at peak meal times, as you’ll be queuing for ages in some cases! The food areas usually get super busy between 6 PM to 7.30 PM and 8.30 PM to 9.15 PM before the acts start on the Main Stage.
Wear sunscreen – Budapest is hot in the summer and even if it’s cloudy, you’ll still need sunscreen on.
Drink plenty of water – STAY HYDRATED!
Be prepared to get filthy – the dust on the island at Sziget is no joke; you will be absolutely filthy by the end of the festival!
Bring something to sit on (such as a canvas bag, a small blanket or just a shawl/jacket). You’ll be partying and dancing an awful lot, but you’ll also need to sit down and rest occasionally too, and instead of bringing a chair, just bring something small to sit on!
Take advantage of the giant machines blowing out cold air and water to cool down in the burning sunshine – these were so cool and so refreshing in the middle of the day!
Sleep in as late as possible as some of the acts don’t finish until 4/5 AM and if you’re partying all day and night, you’ll need as much rest as possible!

When is Sziget Festival 2025?

Sziget Festival is scheduled for the 6th-12th of August 2025. It’s another six-day extravaganza that is sure to be a truly memorable experience, whether it’s your first festival or your 100th!

Where can I buy Sziget Festival tickets?

The Super Early Bird tickets to Sziget sold out incredibly quickly, but you can check the website for updates on ticket releases as and when they come out.

We actually booked our tickets to Sziget pretty last minute as we hadn’t even heard of the festival until around a month before we went! Tickets for the full six days were completely sold out, so we purchased ours via Ticketswap (which is actually a sponsor of one of the stages at the festival!).

We paid €215 (£190) each for a six-day Sziget Festival ticket from Ticketswap. This was actually such great value for money as Super Early Bird tickets cost €275 (£243) each, so by waiting until the very last minute, we got ours for pretty cheap. I was a little apprehensive about booking tickets through a resale site, but Sziget actually endorses it and they’ve even partnered with Ticketswap themselves to ensure that no tickets go to waste!

Of course, by waiting until the last minute to get tickets on a resale site, you run the risk of not being able to get them at all, so if you’re really set on attending the festival, it’s probably best to book them directly through the Sziget website when they’re released.

If you want to go to the festival for just one day, you can purchase day tickets in person at the front of the festival, just before you head in.

How many days is Sziget Festival?

Sziget Festival usually lasts for six full days, typically from Wednesday to Monday, with the last acts finishing in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

You can purchase “moving in” tickets if you’re camping at the festival, so you can enter the day before it starts which gives you the option to choose the best camping spot!

How should I dress for Sziget?

Dressing for Sziget was something that I was really worried about as I’d never packed for a festival before and I had no idea what to wear!

However, the “dress code” at Sziget is super chilled and laid back and you’re encouraged to wear whatever you want and whatever makes you feel comfortable! I’ve included a brief “packing list” below with some top tips about what to pack for Sziget Festival in case you need a bit of help, but I would encourage you to wear whatever you want!

Comfortable shoes (such as trainers or boots – anything you don’t mind getting too muddy or dusty and that you’ll be able to wear all day and night!).
Loose, comfy clothing – such as floaty dresses, skirts, shorts etc.
A light jacket for the evening – we didn’t really get cold on a night at all as it was so hot in August when we attended Sziget for the first time, but having a jacket comes in handy if it is a little chilly.
Sunscreen – it gets super hot and sunny in the summer in Budapest, so sun protection is a must!
Hat & sunglasses – for the same reason as above!
A raincoat/waterproofs – hopefully it won’t rain while you’re at Sziget, but it’s certainly possible, so it’s best to be prepared!
Glitter! Many festival-goers love to wear glitter to get into the party mood and this is definitely something I’d like to do at my next festival (although it is rather impractical to get off!).

Can you bring food to Sziget Festival?

There are plenty of places to eat at the festival, but if you’re trying to save money you might want to bring your own food.

Small snacks such as sandwiches, crisps, fruit, bars, pastries etc can be brought into the festival but you’re not supposed to bring any food items that require cooking.

Can you take alcohol to Sziget Festival?

Technically, bringing alcohol into the festival is prohibited. However, everyone does it!

If you’re camping at Sziget, then you can bring all your alcohol with you on the first day when you arrive. If you’re attending the festival each day but staying in accommodation away from the island, then it makes it trickier to take alcohol into the festival as your bags will be searched each time you enter the festival.

We took pre-mixed bottles of vodka and coke into the festival each day and even though security checked our bags, we still managed to take them inside.

The official rules for taking drinks to Sziget are that you can bring a maximum of 2.5L per person of soft drinks and water, but no alcohol, energy drinks or glassware are permitted. If your bags are searched and security finds alcohol, they will take it off you, but if you can disguise the alcohol by pre-mixing it with soft drinks, you may be able to discreetly take it in…

There are also water filling stations located around the festival and there are lots of volunteers providing free cups of water all day and night.

How good is Sziget Festival?

As Sziget was my first (and currently only!) festival, I had nothing else to compare it to, but I had an absolute blast and it was such an incredible experience!

In terms of festivals, it’s one of the biggest and best festivals in Europe (according to data, not just my opinion alone!) and it hosts around 550,000 people across six days each year!

It’s also such a vast and varied festival in terms of artists, performers and other forms of entertainment and I truly believe that there’s something for everyone, so yes, it is indeed good!

Is Sziget cashless?

Sziget is cashless as the only method of payment that you can use is your debit or credit card or your wristband which you can top up at stations located around the festival.

Can you leave and re-enter Sziget?

It’s certainly possible to leave and re-enter Sziget each day; it’s what everyone does if they’re not camping on-site!

You’ll have to queue up and go through security each time you leave and wish to re-enter, but this only takes a few minutes and then once you’re in, that’s it!

Are there toilets at Sziget?

One of the things that I was most nervous about before we went to Sziget was the toilet situation as I’d heard so many horror stories of portable toilets from people who’d been to festivals such as Glastonbury and Leeds Fest.

However, I couldn’t get over just how nice the toilets were at Sziget! There were many actual toilet blocks located around the island and the long drops and portable toilets weren’t nearly as gross and disgusting as I’d anticipated which was such a pleasant surprise!

Are there showers at Sziget?

Even though we didn’t camp at Sziget, we did see numerous shower blocks located around the festival and they appeared to be in relatively good condition.

Of course, as the festival goes on, all the facilities start to become a little used, but I was so surprised at how nice the shower facilities appeared to be.
