Each city and country that we visited (apart from Budapest as I’d already been there in 2017) were completely brand new to me and it was so exciting to be able to visit so many new places in a relatively short amount of time.

Interrailing Europe routes for 2 weeks

Two weeks is an ideal amount of time to go Interrailing in Europe for the first time! It will allow you to see between three and five cities (depending on how long you want to spend in each place) and it will give you the chance to experience a huge part of this incredible continent as you spent 2 weeks Interrailing Europe!

How do I plan an interrail trip to Europe?

How do I plan an interrail trip to Europe?

If you’re thinking of travelling through Europe via train, your first question is probably “how do I plan an interrail trip in Europe?”.

Luckily, I have plenty of experience planning an interrail route and itinerary in Europe, so this brief section below includes all the information you need to know to plan an epic trip!

The best and easiest way to plan an interrailing trip in Europe is to purchase an Interrail Pass (or the Eurail Pass if you’re not a European citizen). There are numerous different passes to choose from, including a 3-month pass, a 2-month pass and a 1-month pass, as well as several passes that allow you to use a certain number of travel days within a given period of time.

For example, for our 2-week interrailing route in Europe, we purchased the “4 days within 1 month” travel pass which meant that we had one full month to use four days of travel during that time. As we only visited five countries and flew into the first one, it meant that we only needed to travel on four separate days. This meant that we could purchase the “4 days within 1 month” travel pass for €185 as opposed to the 1-month pass for €503!

Of course, if you plan to visit more countries and cities on your interrail trip, you might want to choose an Interrail Pass (Eurail Pass – for non-European citizens) with more travel days, but if you follow our exact 2-week Europe interrailing route below, the 4-day pass is a perfect choice!

In order to plan your interrail route in Europe, you’ll need to carry out the following steps:

  1. Choose which countries/cities you want to visit
  2. Decide when you want to travel/for how long
  3. Choose which Interrail Pass you’ll need
  4. Check the train times between each of your destinations
  5. Make any reservations if they’re required
  6. Embark on the interrailing trip of a lifetime!

P.S. This post isn’t sponsored by Interrail in any way, I just loved their service and it’s the best way to travel around Europe via train which is why I’m raving about it!

2 week Europe interrail itinerary map – Brussels to Bratislava

Map of 2-week Europe interrailing route - Brussels to Bratislava

We spent two full weeks interrailing across Europe, from Brussels in Belgium to Bratislava in Slovakia.

Naturally, the map above doesn’t accurately reflect the exact interrailing route that we took across Europe as it shows the driving time, but you can see approximately how far we travelled from Brussels to Bratislava.

I also want to preface this Europe interrailing itinerary by saying that we spent a lot of time in Budapest (6 days) which I definitely don’t think you need to do; we were in Budapest for that long because we went to Sziget Festival.

As much as I love Budapest, I think you can see everything in the city in 3-4 days, so please feel free to amend this 2-week interrail route to allocate more or less time to the countries and cities that you want to see.

2 week Europe interrail itinerary summary

  1. Brussels – 2 days
  2. Munich – 3 days
  3. Vienna – 2 days
  4. Budapest – 6 days
  5. Bratislava – 1 day

Day 1-3 – Brussels – 2 week Europe interrail itinerary

Admire the spectacular Grand Place - two days in Brussels

We began our two-week Europe interrailing itinerary in the stunning city of Brussels, Belgium. It was my first time in both Brussels and Belgium and it was such a brilliant city to experience for the first time as part of our interrailing trip.

We flew into Brussels Charleroi Airport and spent two days/nights in the city, eating the most delicious food, enjoying the local culture and soaking up the vibrant atmosphere. If you’re planning an interrail trip in Europe, I’d highly recommend adding Brussels to your itinerary as it’s such a great city!

We stayed at the Bedford Hotel & Congress Centre which was a great place to stay in Brussels as it was so conveniently located, it was beautifully decorated and the room was pretty huge, with a large comfy bed and a bathtub.

Day 3-6 – Munich

Munich 2-week Europe interrailing route

No interrailing trip to Europe is complete without visiting at least one German city and while I’m still very keen to visit many more places in Germany, our recent two-week interrailing trip to Europe saw us spending three days in Munich.

Munich is such a wonderful city, with so many great things to see and do and whether you visit during the summer and enjoy all the beautiful outdoor spaces, during Oktoberfest for the world’s most famous celebration of beer or during the winter when the city comes alive with its beautiful Christmas markets, I’d highly recommend adding Munich to your European itinerary.

During our time in Munich, we spent two nights at the Ibis München City Arnulfpark and one night at the 25hours Hotel The Royal Bavarian (as part of a collaborative press stay).

I’d highly recommend both of these hotels in Munich as we had a great stay at each of them. As much as I loved the Ibis hotel, the location was a bit too far out of the city, whereas the 25hours Hotel was located right next to the city’s main train station, making it super close to most of the top sights and attractions in Munich.

Day 6-8 – Vienna – 2 week Europe interrail itinerary

Day 6-8 - Vienna - 2-week Europe interrailing route

Vienna is probably the most aesthetically-pleasing city I’ve ever visited and I’d highly recommend adding it to your interrail route for 2 weeks in Europe as it’s such a vast and varied city with so many wonderful things to see and do.

The architecture in Vienna is some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen in my life and while I found it to be a little more expensive than Brussels and Munich, it’s still 100% worth visiting on an interrail trip in Europe!

We stayed at the 25hours Hotel in the MuseumsQuartier for two nights in Vienna (as part of a collaborative press stay) and it was such a fabulous hotel in the city that I’d highly recommend booking a stay here! It’s situated in the MuseumsQuartier, so it’s super conveniently located for exploring Vienna and the hotel itself is utterly beautiful and so accommodating.

Day 8-14 – Budapest

2-week interrailing trip in Europe - Budapest

As I mentioned above, this was our second time in Budapest so we’d already spent a good chunk of time exploring the beautiful city on our first trip in 2017.

We timed our 2-week interrailing trip through Europe with the 2022 Sziget Festival which was so much fun and it was actually my first-ever festival! If you’re heading to Budapest while interrailing in Europe, I think you only need to spend 3-4 days there, but this itinerary includes a 6-day stay.

I’d recommend spending just three days in Budapest and then I would allocate an additional day to Bratislava, Vienna and Brussels, so the ideal 2 week Europe interrail itinerary and route would look something like this:

  • 3 days in Brussels
  • 3 days in Munich
  • 3 days in Vienna
  • 3 days in Budapest
  • 2 days in Bratislava

Where to stay in Budapest

Where to stay in Budapest

During our most recent trip to Budapest, we spent six nights at the Márton Áron Hostel which is technically a college dorm that is turned into accommodation for Sziget festival-goers each year.

It certainly isn’t the best place I’ve ever stayed and I wouldn’t recommend staying there during a regular interrailing trip in Europe (unless you’re attending the festival) as it’s super basic and pretty far out of the city centre.

Unfortunately, the hotel that we stayed at during our first trip to Budapest in 2017 has now closed down, which is such a shame because it was a fantastic hotel, so I can’t personally recommend any other hotels in Budapest. However, there are hundreds of places to stay on Booking.com in Budapest which you can check here!

  • Head to Fishermen’s Bastion for epic views of the city
  • Check out the beautiful Hungarian Parliament Building
  • Spend the day luxuriating at Széchenyi Spa
  • Walk across the Széchenyi Chain Bridge
  • Witness the shoes on the Danube

Day 14-15 – Bratislava – 2 week Europe interrail itinerary

Day 14-15 - Bratislava - 2-week Europe interrailing route

Bratislava was the fifth and final city that we visited on our 2-week Europe interrailing trip and while we only had time to spend one day/night there, I’d still very much recommend visiting Bratislava.

The food and wine here are super cheap and so delicious and even though it’s not a huge city, there’s still a good chunk of things to see and do in Bratislava.

Where to stay in Bratislava

Where to stay in Bratislava

We only spent one night in Bratislava and we stayed at the wonderful More Than Hotel & Accommodation. This was such a fantastic place to stay and while the location is a little bit out of the city (meaning that you have to rely on public transport or Lyft for around €6 into the city centre), the room itself was absolutely stunning.

It feels like a proper apartment and with welcome drinks, a fully stocked mini-bar, a gorgeous bathroom and a super-comfy bed, this was one of my favourite places that we stayed at during our 2-week interrailing trip in Europe!

FAQs about interrailing in Europe

FAQs about interrailing in Europe

If you’re still wondering whether an interrail trip is the right option for you or you just have a few more questions about planning a 2-week Europe interrailing route, I’ve put together this extensive FAQ section below!

How long should you go interrailing for?

How long you go interrailing for is entirely dependent on your personal preferences and restrictions with regard to how long you’re able to travel for and how much money you’re willing to spend on the trip.

Personally, I’d recommend 3-5 weeks for an interrailing trip in Europe as this will give you the chance to see more cities and countries. With 4 or 5 weeks interrailing in Europe, I think you could visit between 8-10 different cities and countries.

You can use the Interrail Map to plan your trip to see how many travel days you’ll need to use and which type of pass you can purchase to accommodate your wishes.

Which countries are the best for interrailing in Europe?

This totally depends on what kind of interrailing trip you want to experience in Europe and how long you want to travel.

The Interrail Pass covers 33 countries, including Norway, Iceland, Italy, Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Croatia, Turkey, France, Hungary, Luxembourg and many more.

If your interrail itinerary can last as long as 3 months, I’d recommend trying to see as many countries as possible, but if not, I’d stick to places such as Belgium, Austria, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Slovakia, Czechia, Hungary and Poland as these can all be visited relatively easy with a 1-month pass, for example.

Should I go interrailing on my own?

While I’ve never been interrailing on my own, I do know a few people who have and they said it was such a great solo experience.

You’ll meet so many people in each new place that you visit and even though I was interrailing with Matt, we still met plenty of people on the trains as well, so I think it’d be a great solo adventure!

Is interrailing expensive?

Interrailing can be expensive when you include all the costs of travelling to each city and country and of course, the longer that you travel, the more expensive it will be.

The Interrail Passes (Eurail Pass – for non-European citizens) themselves aren’t astronomically expensive, however, with the cheapest pass costing €185 for 4 days of travel in 1 month. There are deals available as well, such as a 7-day pass in 1 month for €251 which is considered to be the best value pass that you can get.

If you know how to budget for each place that you visit, then it shouldn’t cost you too much, especially when visiting cheaper countries such as Slovakia, Poland and Hungary, for example.

How do you stay safe interrailing?

Interrailing is completely safe and is something that millions of travellers do each and every year!

Of course, with any type of travel, there are a few safety tips to bear in mind when interrailing, including:

  • Ensure that your belongings are stored safely in the train luggage compartment and keep them in your eyesight and never leave them completely unattended.
  • Do your research about each destination that you intend to visit.
  • Be aware of changes to train timetables.
  • Ask for help if you’re not sure where you need to be.
  • Keep all your travel documents and electronics such as your passport, phone, wallet, keys etc on your person at all times.
  • Read reviews of accommodation options for each place that you’ll be visiting.
  • Join online forums and travel communities to meet new people in new cities and countries.

Can you sleep on interrail trains?

Overnight trains are a popular way of getting around Europe and many people use them as a way of saving money on accommodation by sleeping on trains on long journeys across the continent.

Some trains will cater specifically to overnight journeys by having proper sleeping compartments and there are also different types of seats available such as sleepers, couchettes and reclining seats that offer a means of sleeping on trains while travelling.
