best hotels in Bali

When it comes to looking at where to stay in Bali, I feel like I’ve got it on good authority to recommend the best places for every budget as we stayed in 7 different properties during our 6-ish weeks on the island.

Between island hopping in Gili T and Nusa Penida, we spent approximately 6 weeks moving around Bali island, staying in hotels, home-stays and luxury houses in Kuta, Seminyak, Amed, Singaraja and Ubud.

If you’re looking for the best places to stay in Bali for every budget, check out my detailed guide below!

Kuta

Arnaya Homestay

Arnaya House Bali

When we landed in Bali back in August, we spent two nights at Arnaya Homestay in Kuta. We arrived at 1am as our flight from Cairns was super late and the staff were so wonderful and stayed up to let us check in at such an incredibly late hour!

The Homestay is located within close proximity to many of Kuta’s top bars, restaurants and of course, the beach. It’s a beautiful family-run place in Kuta and despite its closeness to the centre, it was actually remarkably quiet.

The staff are excellent and attentive and the room and bathroom were incredibly clean (as we arrived so late, I didn’t manage to take a picture of the room but it looks fairly similar to Bali Sunset Villa and Ramaniya House below).

Sun Royal Hotel Bali

Sun Royal Hotel where to stay in Bali Kuta

The Sun Royal Hotel was the last place we stayed in Bali before we flew to the Philippines. It was also the place where my mum flew out from the UK to stay with us for a few days so it’s even more special to me than the other places we stayed.

The staff at Sun Royal are so unbelievably lovely and were happy to assist in anyway they could. We had some issues with noisy neighbours on the first couple of nights but once we’d told the staff on reception, the noise soon quietened down. Furthermore, as Matt and I stayed there for 10 days, we were very kindly given a free meal as we ate at the hotel’s restaurant at least once a day, so they wanted to treat us to a free meal which I thought was so bloody lovely and touching!

Speaking of the on-site restaurant, the food here was absolutely delicious and so fresh and well-prepared. We ate numerous meals at Sun Royal and they were all pretty affordable too.

My personal favourites were the chicken supreme, chicken fingers, and the club sandwich!

The hotel was also equipped with a wonderful swimming pool that saw the sunshine from around 10.30am until 2.30pm. We spent a good few days lounging by the pool and reading; it was the perfect way to spend a late morning/early afternoon.

The only downsides I have to say about the hotel is that they don’t sell any alcohol apart from Bintang and I would have loved to have sipped a few scrumptious cocktails by the pool! Apart from that however, this was definitely one of my favourite places we stayed in Indonesia and I wouldn’t hesitate to go back!

Seminyak- Where To Stay In Bali

Bali Sunset Villa

Bali Sunset Villa

After we’d spent two nights at Arnaya Homestay when we first landed in Bali, we then moved on to Bali Sunset Villa where we stayed for 9 nights.

We decided to treat our time at Bali Sunset Villa as a proper holiday as we’d just spent 10 weeks living in a campervan in New Zealand and Australia so we were pretty damn ready for some luxury and comfort!

The room at Bali Sunset Villa was incredibly spacious and clean and even had a tea and coffee station.

We also had our own patio area which made the perfect space to work and sit outside and enjoy a few drinks and some card games on an evening.

There’s also a pool at the hotel which was such a lovely place to read and cool down from the hot Balinese sun! The only thing I could recommend improving on would be to invest in some more sunbeds as there’s only three. However, I’m not sure if there would even be much room to add them in!

Bali Sunset Villa

Aside from that, our stay at Bali Sunset Villa was fab; the staff were so lovely and always ready to help. We also ate at the hotel many times, both for breakfast (which was included) and lunch and dinner.

Bali Sunset Villa was definitely one of the most expensive places we stayed at in Bali but I believe that it was worth every penny and I’d definitely stay again!

Ubud – Where To Stay In Bali

Ramaniya House

Ramaniya House

Once we’d left Seminyak and checked out of Bali Sunset Villa, we headed to Ubud where we stayed at Ramaniya House for a few nights.

The room was pretty basic and simple but clean and well-kept and despite it being very near the centre of Ubud, we didn’t suffer with noise too much. It’s in a great location for getting out and about in Ubud; it’s just a short 15-minute walk to the Monkey Forest and the famous Ubud Market is located pretty much next door to Ramaniya House.

Ramaniya House

The breakfast here was also pretty good; with a hearty helping of eggs, toast and fresh fruit. We also managed to get some laundry done at the homestay next door which was great of them to do. The staff at Ramaniya House were friendly and helpful and would help organise tours, transport and scooter rental if you needed it.

Ramaniya House

The only negative I have to stay about this homestay is that there wasn’t a proper shower in our room; we had to sit in the bath and use the shower head instead while sitting down. However, that’s a very small discrepancy and it really wasn’t a big deal at all!

Trinity Gardens Ubud

Best hotels in Ubud Bali

I’ve actually written an entire blog post about our 2-day stay at Trinity Gardens Ubud as we were very kindly offered our stay on a complimentary basis.

If you’re looking for somewhere luxurious and slightly quirky to stay while in Bali, then you definitely need to add Trinity Gardens to your list. Nestled between local farmers’ plots of land and rice fields, Trinity Gardens takes peace and tranquility to a whole new level.

There are various accommodation types to choose from; from The Tower (where we stayed) to The Mansion and The Den. Each house is totally unique and offers a truly bespoke stay. Make sure to head over and read my full review of our stay at Trinity Gardens Ubud here!

Singaraja (Buleleng)

D’Kailash Retreat

D'Kailash Retreat Singaraja

I could write an entire essay about our stay at D’Kailash Retreat as it was an experience that was entirely unique; both in good and bad terms.

In terms of the actual accommodation here, I have very mixed feelings about whether I could wholeheartedly recommend it. D’Kailash is located pretty much on top of a mountain, in the middle of nowhere, just outside of Singaraja.

We stayed here for 12 nights while we extended our visas at the immigration office in Singaraja and it was a challenging and often tough experience.

First of all, however, I really can’t rave about the staff here enough. It’s run on a daily basis by a family, headed by the father called Gede. He and his wife were so helpful and lovely and always came to our aid with whatever we needed. Whether it was to change rooms due to a gecko pooing on our bed, helping us to try and scare away a giant lizard that had invaded our room or driving Matt down to the closest shop to get water and noodles on his scooter; they really couldn’t do enough.

top favourite experiences in Indonesia

However, despite the views from the little wooden huts being absolutely breathtaking, D’Kailash Retreat was just far too remote for me to properly enjoy it. We had to order takeaway food every single night from a nearby warung as when we attempted to walk down on the first night, I broke down in tears when walking back up the mountain as it was so steep and there were so many stray dogs everywhere!

I think if you’ve hired your own scooter and can get about yourself, and you’re looking for somewhere quite literally in the middle of nowhere, then D’Kailash would be a great place to stay. I just didn’t enjoy spending 12 nights so far removed from everyone that much!

Amed

Amed Kunara Guest House

Amed Kunara House

We stayed at Amed Kunara Guest House for just one night before we got the fast boat to Gili T from Amed Harbour.

We were only there for around 16 hours in total but it was still a pleasant stay and the room was incredibly spacious, very clean and the bathroom was huge!

The little houses are nestled behind a closed gate so it can be a little tricky to find your way to them but it gives the whole place a private and safe feel. It’s a great place to stay for a night or two if you’re waiting to get the boat to the Gili Islands and I would have happily stayed there for a good few nights.

The only slight downside is that there’s not an awful lot to do in Amed apart from diving or getting the boat to the Gilis so it’s not really a place you’d need to stay for a long time.
