Sandbar Rooftop at Hilton New York Fashion District Hotel

There are so many incredible rooftop bars in Midtown Manhattan, but Sandbar Rooftop, located on the 23rd floor of the Hilton New York Fashion District hotel, might just be one of the most aesthetically-pleasing.

With its Hamptons-inspired decor in the summer months (pictured throughout this guide), and its cosy winter wonderland theme throughout the winter months, Sandbar is a must-visit for couples, friends, and even solo travellers looking for one of the most beautiful rooftops in Manhattan.

The rooftop can be found on West 26th Street, between 6th Avenue and 7th Avenue in the Chelsea/Fashion District neighbourhood of Manhattan. To access the rooftop, you’ll need to head inside the lobby of the Hilton New York Fashion District hotel and then follow the signs towards the Sandbar Rooftop NYC elevator.

Sandbar Rooftop is located less than a 10-minute walk from 230 Fifth, Glass Ceiling Rooftop, Somewhere Nowhere, and The Fleur Room at Moxy Chelsea, which are all some of my favourite rooftops in NYC, so it’s a great place to add to your itinerary if you’re planning a rooftop bar crawl of Midtown Manhattan!

Sandbar Rooftop NYC menu

As with most rooftop bars in New York City, Sandbar certainly isn’t a cheap place to eat and drink while enjoying the views of Manhattan, with cocktail prices ranging from $18 to $20, glasses of wine from $12 to $15, and beer from $9 to $12.

The food at Sandbar Rooftop New York also isn’t super cheap, with most dishes priced between $15 and $25, even for nibbles such as pretzel bites and cheese plates, but after visiting over two dozen rooftops in NYC (so far!), I can safely say that it’s still by no means the most expensive rooftop in the city!

We were very kindly treated to two classic cocktails each from the Sandbar Rooftop menu, including (from left to right):

“Sloop” – Wild Turkey Rye, Lemon Juice, Honey Syrup Lemon Bitters.
“Runabout” – Absolut Vodka, Blood Orange, Aperol Lemon, Prosecco.
“Surfs Up” – Absolut Vodka, Cucumber Purée, Lime Juice, St Germaine, Club Soda, Cucumber Ribbon.
“Riptide” – Malfy Grapefruit Gin, St. Germaine, Blue Curaçao Agave, Lemon, Egg Whites.

I absolutely love how fun and colourful each cocktail is, especially the “Surfs Up” and “Riptide” cocktails as it’s not very often you get such vibrant green and blue drinks!

We also ordered two items off the food menu at Sandbar, including the traditional margherita pinsa bread, and the hummus trio which consisted of three types of flavoured hummus (classic, sun-dried tomato, and jalapeño) and a generous helping of pinsa bread.

The margherita pinsa (a hand-pressed type of bread/pizza) very much tasted like a traditional pizza and was absolutely full of flavour! The hummus trio was also super tasty; the classic and sun-dried varieties were my favourites, and I was very impressed by how much bread there was to dip into the hummus.

Do you have to be 21+ to visit Sandbar Lounge & Rooftop Bar Chelsea?

Unfortunately, Sandbar Rooftop NYC is a 21+ venue only, meaning that they don’t allow under 21s at any time of day or night, even with a parent or guardian.

Do you need a reservation to visit the Hilton Rooftop Bar NYC?

Reservations are not required to visit Sandbar Rooftop as they accept and welcome walk-ins. However, it is strongly recommended that you make a reservation if you want to guarantee seating at a table, rather than at the bar, and reservations are also recommended for large groups and private events.

Sandbar Rooftop NYC dress code

While there isn’t a strictly enforced dress code at the rooftop, they do welcome an “après-ski” vibe during the winter months and more informal, summer attire during the warmer months, however, this is not required, just suggested.

As long as you’re dressed in smart/casual clothing (no pyjamas or sportswear permitted – but trainers are allowed), then you will be absolutely fine!

What are the views like from the Sandbar Chelsea Rooftop?

From Sandbar’s prime real estate location in the heart of Manhattan, you can enjoy views of the Empire State Building, the H&M tower (4 Times Square), Edge/Hudson Yards, and various other skyscrapers in Midtown Manhattan.

While the views of these buildings are pretty impressive, I personally don’t think the views are quite as good as some of my other favourite NYC rooftops (such as 230 Fifth, Somewhere Nowhere, and The Fleur Room).

You can certainly see the Empire State Building and Edge from Sandbar Rooftop, but there are several other neighbouring skyscrapers that prevent the views from being absolutely world-class!

Is the rooftop open all year-round?

Sandbar Rooftop is one of the best rooftops in Manhattan that’s open all year-round, meaning that it’s a great spot to visit during the winter to enjoy the rooftop’s magical winter wonderland decor, as well as during the summer months when it transforms into a warm weather oasis that resembles the islands of Greece, Spain, and even the nearby Hamptons.

There is no cover charge or minimum spend required to visit Sandbar NYC.
