For the third instalment of my Madeira travel guides (you can find my 4 day Madeira itinerary here and my guide about where to eat in Funchal here!), I thought I would share an in-depth review of the Next by Savoy Signature Hotel in Funchal, which is where we were based during our four days in Madeira.

Location – Next Savoy Signature Funchal

The Next by Savoy Signature Hotel is located just on the outskirts of Funchal city centre, approximately 25 minutes from Cristiano Ronaldo Madeira International Airport by car and less than a 30 minute walk from most of Funchal’s top sights and attractions.

The hotel is located on a road with a bit of a steep incline, so this is something to be aware of when walking to and from the city, but it’s only a couple of hundred metres, so it’s not a huge hike up the hill!

The rooms at Next by Savoy Signature Madeira

As soon as we checked into Next Hotel, I was immediately impressed by its vast lobby and reception area (more on that below), so I couldn’t wait to check out my room for the next four days!

Upon arrival at my room on the fourth floor, I was blown away by just how beautiful it was!

My room was equipped with soft furnishings in lovely, muted tones, a giant bed flanked by two wardrobe spaces, a sizeable desk area, a wall-mounted TV, a mini fridge/tea and coffee-making station (although you have to purchase tea and coffee from the hotel’s reception), air conditioning, free WiFi and, best of all, a huge balcony with views out to sea!

The bathroom was also very generously sized, with a gorgeous rainfall shower, beautiful sink/vanity unit, free toiletries and even a bidet.

While I do always enjoy having a bath in a hotel room, the stunning shower in my room at Next Hotel was more than enough and I didn’t really feel like I was missing out by not having a bath.

I also really appreciated the spacious desk area as it allowed me to spend some time managing my blog and creating content for the trip in between all the exciting activities we enjoyed!

Outside on the generously-sized balcony, there is a small table with two chairs which makes for the perfect place for a relaxing evening drink either before or after dinner! My room at Next by Savoy Signature also looked out to sea and I was treated to gorgeous views of the sunrise every morning.

I absolutely love the rooms at Next Hotel; everything was beautifully furnished, the bed was insanely comfortable and it felt like such a luxury to wake up to such breathtaking views every morning!

Dining facilities at Next Hotel Madeira

There are numerous dining facilities that both hotel guests and non-guests can enjoy at Next Hotel. From the lavish breakfast buffet to the Hawaiian-inspired outdoor dining area to the reception area’s snack bar to the fantastic rooftop bar and lounge, there are so many choices for food and drink!

Breakfast buffet

The breakfast buffet at Next Hotel is located on the ground floor of the property, just next to the hotel lobby.

Guests can enjoy a vast range of both continental and hot buffet food options, including many different cuts of meat and cheeses, fresh fruit, as well as hot items such as eggs, bacon, sausages, potatoes and much more!

There’s also a brilliant cake and pastry section and even a champagne table where you can make delicious mimosas!

I was so busy eating all the delicious food at the hotel buffet that I forgot to actually take a picture of the food that I ate, but trust me when I say that it’s definitely worth having breakfast at Next Hotel before you head out for the day!

Recharge Bar & Restaurant

Lunch at Next Hotel - 4 days in Madeira itinerary

The Recharge Bar & Restaurant is located adjacent to the hotel’s outdoor swimming pool and lounge area on the sea-level access point of the hotel.

We enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Recharge Bar & Restaurant during our stay at Next by Savoy Signature and as I mentioned in my Funchal food guide, I could have quite happily eaten almost all of the dishes on offer at Recharge!

From delicious Japanese bites to Hawaiian-inspired dishes to lunchtime classics such as the club sandwich, burgers and salads, there is so much incredible choice at this on-site dining facility.

Not only is the restaurant area a beautiful place to eat, but you can also enjoy views of one of the hotel’s swimming pools, as well as views of the sea as you dine.

Cloud Bar

Located on the hotel’s seventh floor which requires key card access to visit, Next Hotel’s Cloud Bar is the stunning rooftop bar and pool area that has expansive views out to sea.

The Cloud Bar is an adults-only zone that serves light bites to eat, as well as signature cocktails, all the while boasting remarkable panoramic views.

Network Bar

On the ground floor of the hotel, just next to the reception desk (where you can also take advantage of the express check in machines!), you’ll find the hotel’s Network Bar that specialises in light bites and snacks, as well as a vast array of wines, spirits, beer and cocktails.

The Network Bar is a great place to hang out at any time of the day, but it’s arguably most atmospheric during the late evening when the ambiance is nice and relaxed.

Amenities & facilities at Next Hotel Funchal Madeira

Next by Savoy Signature – Funchal Hotel Review

Hotel Next Savoy Signature Funchal boasts so many amazing amenities and facilities that I truly think you could spend days at a time at the hotel and never get bored!

From a choice of two swimming pools, multiple dining options, a private beach with sea access, DJ performances on the rooftop and even a spa and gym, there is so much to enjoy at Next Hotel that you don’t even have to leave the premises!

Rooftop pool & bar

I’ve already mentioned Hotel Next’s incredible rooftop bar and pool, but I also wanted to include it in this section as well as I really think that it deserves shouting about!

The rooftop swimming pool provides the perfect place to relax and unwind and there’s even an underwater sound system that allows you to enjoy the music from one of the regular DJs who perform at the Cloud Bar on certain days!

There are dozens of sun loungers dotted all around the rooftop, as well as multiple cabanas that offer a cosy and relaxing respite from the intense Madeiran sun! The views out to sea from the 7th floor rooftop are absolutely astonishing and even if you don’t intend to spend the whole day relaxing up there, I would highly recommend heading up just for a little bit to check out the views!

Ground-level pool & sea access

Back down on the ground floor, Next by Savoy Signature also boasts yet another swimming pool that comes equipped with its very own private beach/sea access so you don’t even have to leave the property to take a dip in the refreshingly warm sea!

The pool is surrounded by dozens of sun loungers and seating areas and is located just next to the hotel’s Recharge Bar & Restaurant, so you could easily spend the whole day relaxing, drinking and eating in this part of the hotel!

To access this part of the hotel, you need to cross the bridge on the first floor that takes you over the road to this secluded and private section of Next Hotel.

Spa & gym – Next by Savoy Signature Hotel

Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough time to properly take advantage of the hotel’s spa and gym facilities, but from what I saw of them, they looked very well-equipped!

The Refresh Spa is open from 10 AM to 8 PM daily and you can enjoy a fantastic spa menu consisting of treatments such as massages, body peels, facials and more!

The hotel’s gym is open 24/7 and provides equipment and machinery such as treadmills, weights, an elliptical, a rowing machine and more, so if you’re in the mood for a late-night workout or an early morning session, you’re well catered for at Next Hotel!

Solarium

Another wonderful part of Hotel Next that’s worth checking out is the solarium which is located in the same part of the hotel as the ground-level pool and sea access area.

The solarium is a gorgeous part of the hotel that boasts marvellous views of the sea and it would make for an excellent yoga or pilates area if you feel so inclined!

Next by Savoy Signature Hotel review – conclusion

Despite enjoying four wonderful days in Madeira, I still don’t feel like I had enough time to properly enjoy all the facilities on offer at Next by Savoy Signature, so it would definitely be my number one choice of hotel for my return visit to Funchal!

From the awesome dining options to the two swimming pools and insanely beautiful rooftop area, not to mention the incredible rooms, my stay at Next Hotel was thoroughly enjoyable and then some and I would 100% recommend it for your stay in Funchal, Madeira!
