July is a great time to visit NYC as there are plenty of fun summer activities to enjoy throughout the month. However, as July is one of the hottest months of the year in New York City, you’ll need to be prepared to face intense temperatures and sometimes even extreme weather warnings due to the heat.

If you enjoy plenty of warm weather and gorgeous summer sunshine, as well as the chance to experience plenty of fun outdoor activities and events, July is a great month to visit NYC!

As you can see from the graph above, temperatures in NYC in July are usually in the high 20s, with a daily average of around 28°C to 29°C (82.4°F ), making it one of the hottest months of the year. Even on the cooler side of things, temperatures rarely fall below 20°C (68°F), so you can certainly expect a lot of warm weather!

Surprisingly, despite July being one of the warmest months of the year, it also has the highest daily chance of a wet day which suggests a 35% chance of rain on the 31st July!

At the beginning of the month, you can expect an incredible 15 hours of daylight, with the sun rising at around 5.30 AM and setting at around 8.30 PM, which is fantastic for experiencing as many activities in each day as possible as you’ll get a lot of daylight hours to enjoy more things!

Enjoy the city’s many rooftop bars

There are more than 100 rooftop bars in New York City so naturally, you won’t be able to visit them all on a short trip to the city, but if you do happen to be visiting New York in July, it’s the perfect time to check out some of the best rooftops in the city.

Some of my favourite rooftop bars in NYC include:

Hire row boats in Central Park

Central Park is undoubtedly one of the best places to hang out in New York in July as there are so many wonderful things to see and experience.

One of the best things to do in Central Park during the summer months is to hire a row boat from Central Park Boathouse (formerly Loeb Boathouse) and leisurely cruise around The Lake.

Each row boat can accommodate up to four people and they cost $25 per hour to hire. They are currently available on a first-come, first-serve basis and are not available to pre-book, so if you want to experience this gorgeous summer activity in New York City, head to the Central Park Boathouse to hire a boat!

Another fun outdoor activity to enjoy in July in NYC is a picnic at Little Island.

Situated on an artificial island on Pier 55 in Hudson River Park, Little Island is a beautiful outdoor spot to enjoy during the summer months in New York as it’s a huge park area with plenty of places to sit and enjoy a picnic.

Boasting views of the Empire State Building, Edge at Hudson Yards and even all the way down to the One World Trade Center, Little Island is such a beautiful place to visit in the summer.

Top tip: Head to Chelsea Market just a few blocks from Little Island to pick up some picnic supplies.

There are several ways to take a cruise to/around the Statue of Liberty, including taking the free Staten Island Ferry which just takes you past the SOL, as well as a paid cruise that takes you to both Liberty Island and Ellis Island.

Experience a helicopter ride over the city

A helicopter ride over New York City is certainly something that can be enjoyed all year round, but I would personally argue that the summer months are the best time to experience an iconic ride over the city as you can enjoy longer days, better weather conditions and most likely better sunsets!

Of course, a helicopter ride is by no means cheap, but it is arguably one of the best ways to experience the magic of the city, so I would suggest adding it to your New York bucket list for your next visit!

Independence Day, also known as the Fourth of July, falls on a Thursday this year, meaning that there will be plenty of celebrations to take part in over the Fourth of July weekend.

The world-famous Macy’s Firework Show is back for the first time in over a decade this year and it’s sure to be a mighty spectacle! Macy’s will be setting off numerous firework displays from barges located along the Hudson River from approximately West 14th Street to West 34th Street in Manhattan.

Packing list for July in NYC

As the weather is likely to be very hot in July in New York City, it’s a good idea to pack summer-appropriate clothing such as skirts, shorts, t-shirts dresses and, of course, plenty of suncream! It’s also a good idea to pack a lightweight, waterproof jacket as there is still a chance that it could rain in NYC in July.

While you might be tempted to pack/wear summer footwear such as sandals, heels or flip flops, I would probably advise against this as you’ll most likely be doing a lot of walking and therefore, comfortable walking boots or trainers will be a much better option.

As always, I would recommend taking a wearable bum bag/fanny pack to keep your essential belongings such as phone, wallet and passport safe. I’ve used and loved my Eastpak bum bag for almost six years now and it’s definitely my go-to bag of choice when travelling.
