Is October a good time to visit NYC?

October is one of the best months to visit NYC to see the city in full autumnal bloom. From the expansive Central Park to the tree-lined avenues of Midtown Manhattan, Downtown Brooklyn, and beyond, there is so much beauty to behold in New York City in October.

There are also plenty of fun October events in NYC to enjoy, including Halloween celebrations, food markets, and the start of the basketball and ice hockey seasons.

New York City in October weather

Despite autumn being in full swing in New York City, October temperatures actually remain relatively pleasant throughout the month, especially at the start of October, with daytime temperatures ranging from highs of 21°C to lows of 15°C (70°F to 60°F), and nighttime temperatures ranging from 14°C to 8°C (57°F to 47°F).

It’s definitely jacket season in October in New York City, but you can probably hold off packing your huge winter coat, unless you’re visiting NYC towards the end of the month.

You can expect a good few days of rainfall in NYC in October, but it’s incredibly unlikely that you’ll experience any snowfall.

Best things to do in NYC in October

October marks the start of the holiday months in New York City, with the Halloween celebrations at the end of the month marking the first official festive event that will ramp up all the way through November and December.

You won’t see many Christmas decorations in New York in October, but you can certainly expect the city to be decorated for Halloween, especially in neighbourhoods such as the West Village/Greenwich Village, Chelsea, and many parts of Brooklyn.

Eat your way around Chelsea Market

Chelsea Market is one of my favourite places to visit in NYC at any time of year, but I think it’s particularly awesome in the autumn months as it provides a fantastic collection of places to eat, perfect for breaking up the walk along the High Line.

There are dozens of awesome food vendors inside Chelsea Market, including some of my favourites such as Doughnuttery, Black Seed Bagels, Berlin Currywurst, and Los Tacos No.1.

Visit the city’s best museums – New York City in October

New York City is home to dozens of incredible museums, including the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, MoMA, The Met, and the American Museum of Natural History.

If you’re only in NYC for a few days in October, you won’t be able to visit all of the city’s best museums, but you should be able to tick off a few of New York’s most prestigious exhibitions and installations.

Take a cruise around the New York Harbor

October is one of the best months to take a cruise around the New York Harbor as the weather is still mild enough to enjoy the outdoor views, but you won’t have to endure the excessive crowds that come with the busy summer months.

Go on a street food tour – New York City in October

A food tour is another must-do in October in New York. Of course, you can head off on a culinary exploration of the city’s best dining spots at any time of the year, but I personally think it’s better to do it before the weather gets too cold in the winter months.

Admire the fall foliage throughout the city’s parks

October is one of the prettiest months to admire the beauty of fall in NYC. Despite being a mammoth metropolis, New York City is also home to plenty of green spaces and parks that come alive with brilliant autumnal colours in October.

Central Park is obviously one of the best places to admire the breathtaking fall colours in NYC, but Washington Square Park, Roosevelt Island, the High Line, and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden are all awesome places to see the stunning trees, leaves, and flowers of fall.

October really is a fantastic month to visit NYC as there are so many seasonal events happening throughout the month. In the section below, you can find some of the best New York events in October 2026.

Watch a film at Movie Nights at Hudson Yards – multiple dates

Throughout the summer months, there are numerous places around the city where you can watch outdoor movies, including Bryant Park and Brooklyn Bridge Park.

In October, however, you can head to the Public Square and Gardens at Hudson Yards to watch a weekly movie shown on The Big Screen. Every Friday, from mid-September to the end of October, you can attend a free movie screening at Hudson Yards!

New York Film Festival – dates tbc

Presented by Film at Lincoln Center, the New York Film Festival is an annual event held every fall in NYC that showcases dozens of films across various theatres and screens.

You can purchase single ticket passes, or 6-film or 12-film passes that give you access to various screenings of your choice. The NYFF is one of the most prestigious film festivals in the United States; if you’re an avid film lover, check out tickets for the film festival on the Film at Lincoln Center website.

Columbus Day Parade – 12th October 2026

Held on the 12th of October in 2026, the Columbus Day Parade is an annual event in New York City that celebrates the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the Americas.

It is largely observed by Italian Americans who honour their culture and heritage during the Columbus Day celebrations, with the parade being one of the largest in America; more than 35,000 people participate in the parade every year!

New York City will be incredibly busy on Columbus Day, with over 1 million people expected to watch the parade that begins at Fifth Avenue and 44th Street, and continues all the way along Fifth towards 72nd Street.

New York City Wine & Food Festival – dates tbc

The New York City Wine & Food Festival is back in the city for multiple dates in October 2026. There will be more than 500 chefs in attendance and over 80 events to discover across the four day festival, including dining experiences, food tastings, parties, masterclasses, live workshops, discussions, and more!

Oktoberfest NYC – dates tbc

Oktoberfest actually begins in mid-September in NYC and runs until the last weekend of October, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to take part in the festivities if you’re visiting New York in October.

The festival is held at the Waterfront Bar on Pier 15 and is free to attend (you can purchase food and drinks once you’re there). It’s not essential to reserve tickets in advance, as they do welcome walk-ins, but you can get special tickets such as VIP passes and large table reservations via the Oktoberfest NYC website!

Smorgasburg food festival – multiple dates and locations

If the New York City Wine & Food Festival or Oktoberfest don’t quite satiate your New York culinary desires, then head to one of the three Smorgasburg locations throughout New York City where you’ll find hundreds of truly incredible food vendors.

Saturdays at Marsha P. Johnson State Park in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Sundays at Prospect Park, Brooklyn.

NYC Village Halloween Parade – 31st October 2026

Of course, if you’re visiting NYC in October, especially towards the end of the month, you’ll get to see the city decorated for Halloween, and if you happen to be in New York on the 31st of October, you should definitely add the Village Halloween Parade to your spooky itinerary!

New York is famed for its many parades throughout the year, and the Village Halloween Parade is one of the very best, with more than 50,000 aptly-dressed people taking to the streets of New York to parade their scariest costumes!

The Village Halloween Parade begins on Canal Street and 6th Avenue and goes all the way up 6th Avenue to 15th Street. The Parade begins at 7 PM, but it’s a good idea to arrive at a viewing spot along 6th Avenue well in advance so that you can get a good spot.

Watch the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden – multiple dates

October marks the start of both the NBA and NHL seasons, (the NFL season also commences in September), so if you were hoping to watch some American sports during your time in New York, October is one of the best months to do so!

There are numerous basketball games held at the New York Knicks’ home arena of Madison Square Garden throughout October, including several preseason games.

The New York Rangers ice hockey team also call Madison Square Garden their home arena, and there are five ice hockey matches that you can attend if you’re visiting NYC in October!

What to wear in New York City in October

As you can see from the New York October weather section above, the city isn’t outrageously cold in October, but it definitely will be jacket weather, so it’s a good idea to pack a relatively warm (and preferably waterproof) jacket.

It’s also a good idea to pack layers for October in New York, such as t-shirts, jumpers, and tights, so that you can add/remove items of clothing depending on the weather. A large winter coat won’t be entirely necessary, but you’ll definitely need to bring layers to wrap up with, especially on an evening.
