Winter for me, is the most romantic season as it’s the perfect time to cosy up on the sofa together or wrap up warm and head out into the bitter cold air. I’m never short of date night ideas and considering I’ve already talked about my date night plans for summer and autumn, I thought it was only appropriate to put one together for winter too!
Here’s my romantic date night ideas for winter; enjoy!
Wear your most Christmassy attire and head out to your local ice skating rink. Last Saturday, Matt and I headed to Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland at the Designer Outlet in York which has now become a tradition for us to do every year. Ice skating is one of my absolute favourite activities to do at winter time and it’s even better when I get to go with Matt. The ice rink that we go to has a 30 foot tree in the centre of the rink and has a gorgeous cabin-esque bar right next to it. The bar is perfect for grabbing a hot chocolate (or a cider in Matt’s case) before you head out on to the freezing cold rink. I think that ice skating is definitely one of the most romantic winter date ideas and I already want to go back again!
Watch your favourite Christmas films
There’s nothing better on a freezing cold day than donning your finest festive pyjamas, making a mug of something hot and delicious and curling up on the sofa to watch your favourite Christmas film. Elf is always on my to-watch list at Christmas time and as Matt loves it so much as well, we’ll be sure to watch it once or twice this year. Bonus points if you get the cat to cosy up with you too as that really is just ultimate #goals.
Decorate the Christmas tree together
Decorating the Christmas tree is always one of my favourite things to do and this year will be the second year that Matt and I have decorated the tree together. Last year I suggested that we start the tradition of buying a new bauble together every year and I think it’s such a lovely and romantic thing to do. Light all the candles, put a festive film on in the background, get a mug of Baileys or hot chocolate (or both!) and transform your house into a Winter Wonderland!
Go on a long walk
A ‘long’ walk may be a bit of a push here, especially when the temperatures outside are enough to freeze your bits off but if you wrap up warm and huddle up together then going on a long walk can be incredibly cute and romantic. It’s even better if it’s snowing as you can take “candid” pictures of each other frolicking in the snow that are just dying to be uploaded to Instagram!
Have a bath together…
While it may not be the most practical or comfortable activity to squeeze you both in the bath, if your tub allows two fully grown humans to enjoy a bath together then I’d 100% recommend it. Especially if you’ve been out on a long walk and you cannot get warm; a nice hot bath with your SO is not only incredibly romantic but also potentially live-saving for your frostbitten toes!
Cook a delicious, wintery meal together
Neither Matt or I are that good at cooking but everyday last week we made the conscious effort to cook something yummy everynight and we were pleasantly surprised at just how well we managed it. We’d sit at the table each night and discuss our respective days while eating something warm and delicious. It’s even better if you can surprise your other half with a romantic meal, accompanied by lots of candles, maybe some fairy lights and a bottle of wine.
Go Christmas shopping together
Yesterday Matt and I went Christmas shopping in York and as well as getting most of our shopping done, we also had a wander around the Christmas markets. While it can be pretty stressful going Christmas shopping in the freezing cold while you’re trying to battle through the crowds, it can also be pretty fun. I love going Christmas shopping with Matt as it’s lovely to spend a whole afternoon together being all wrapped up and festive.
Build a blanket fort
This alternative approach to simply just laying on the sofa watching films can be incredibly fun and very romantic. Get all your cosiest blankets, duvets and cushions and make an awesome fort. Make some hot chocolate, order a huge takeaway and get all your favourite Christmas episodes of the best TV shows and binge-watch them all night. You could even sleep in the blanket fort and put fairy lights all around it to make it even more cute and romantic.
