The Best Pizza Slices In Manhattan - RANKED

Looking for the best pizza slice in Manhattan? You’ve come to the right place! Below, you’ll find my ultimate list of the best NY pizza slices in Manhattan, ranked!

While I know that it’s not exactly the most ~cultured~ response to “What’s your favourite food?”, pizza is usually one of my go-to answers (along with Indian food, Chinese food and Italian food in general 😂).

So, when we were planning our one-month stay in New York, I knew that I really wanted to prioritise the foodie scene of the city, especially when it came to pizza slices as even though I’d been to New York four times before, I’d never really prioritised the food in the city, so I was super excited to try as many delicious cuisines as possible during our one month trip there; starting with pizza!

I decided to do a lot of research into the best pizza slices in Manhattan and after trawling through many blog posts and TripAdvisor reviews, I collated a list of around 50 places, before whittling it down to around 15-20 pizzerias in New York. From there, I put together a list of the top places for pizza slices in the city and Matt and I then worked out a self-guided walking pizza tour of New York City.

We managed to visit 10 pizza places in one day in Manhattan – it was a long day – and then we visited another five places a week later. I was pretty bloody fed up with eating pizza by the end of it, but it was all worth it for the “research” 😉.

You might scoff and think us crazy (and you’d probably be right!), but all that research and planning meant that we’ve now collated a list of NYC’s top pizza slices so that you know exactly where to go for a slice in the city!

Naturally, you don’t have to go crazy and visit all the places on this list, but hopefully, you’ll find a slice or two that you really love and of course, your top 10 list might differ drastically from ours!

Our ranking system is based on multiple factors, including:

  • Taste (naturally).
  • Toppings (we chose pepperoni as the topping for every single pizza slice, apart from one, as we thought this was a good way of seeing how generous the toppings were and how good the flavours were).
  • Length of wait time.
  • How hot or cold it was.
  • Price and whether the cost of the slice included taxes or not.
  • We also gave our first impressions based on the very first bite of the pizza itself and the crust, so it was very much based on how good that initial bite was.
  • We also had one pizza slice between us in every place so that we could visit more places as a slice each would have been far too much food and we wouldn’t have been able to visit even half of the places we did!

If you’re heading to NYC anytime soon, or you’re currently there and you want to have a carb-fuelled day exploring the city’s best pizzerias, check out this ultimate list of the best pizza slices in Manhattan, New York City!

1. Sal & Carmine Pizza – 9.3 – best pizza slices in Manhattan

Sal and Carmine Pizza -The Best Pizza Slices In Manhattan - RANKED

Sal & Carmine Pizza was a place that I’d never even heard of until I carried out my research for our self-guided walking pizza tour of Manhattan but it actually turned out to be our number one pizza slice in New York City, scoring a mightily impressive 9.3/10!

It’s located in the Upper West Side between 101st and 102nd Streets, so it’s not exactly super conveniently located if you’re staying downtown or in midtown, but we committed to a full day of pizza exploration and this place came out on top!

Sal and Carmine pizza slice

The pepperoni toppings were generous enough, it wasn’t too sloppy, the crust/base was crisp without being too hard and overall, it was just generally a very delicious pizza. It’s also only $4 a slice, making it one of the cheaper pizza slices in New York on this list.

2. Joe’s Pizza (Carmine Street) – 9.2

Joe's Pizza (Carmine Street) - 9.1 - best pizza slices in New York City

Joe’s Pizza is arguably the most famous place in New York for a slice of pizza and as it ranks as number two on our list, I can vouch for its deliciousness, along with many other New Yorkers. Joe’s was probably my personal favourite slice of them all, but as we combined our individual scores to find an average, it was pushed into second place by Sal & Carmine.

There are also multiple Joe’s Pizza locations dotted around the city and we did actually try a few of the locations over the course of the month that we were in the city, but I personally think the Carmine Street branch is the best.

At $4.50 a slice, it’s cheaper than some of the other places featured in this guide of the best NYC pizza slices and it’s absolutely bloody delicious as well. It’s delightfully cheesy, the pepperoni is so fresh and juicy and the crust is perfect. The only slight qualm I have with Joe’s Pizza is that because it’s so cheesy, the toppings can tend to slide off a little, so you really need to fold it while eating.

3. Baker’s Pizza – 9.1

Bakers pizza slice

Baker’s Pizza was actually the last place on our pizza walking tour of New York before we left the city and it was so good that it secured its place in the top 3 best pizza slices in NYC!

Matt preferred this slice slightly more than I did, although I certainly agreed that it was very good. It was so incredibly tasty and both the cheese and the pepperoni were scrumptious. My only issue with it is that by the time it was reheated, the base had become a little too crisp and burnt, but I reckon if this was straight out of the oven freshly made, it might have secured the number one spot on this list!

4. Sofia Pizza Shoppe – 9.0

Sofia Pizza Shoppe

Sofia Pizza Shoppe’s pepperoni slice was another one of the cheaper slices featured in this list which certainly gave it some brownie points. Again, Matt ranked this place slightly higher than I did as I didn’t think the pepperoni was quite as good as some of the other contenders.

However, the cheese was yummy and oh-so greasy and the crust and base of this pizza were wonderful, which is why it received a well-deserved 9/10.

5. Koronet Pizza – 8.9 – best pizza slices in Manhattan

Koronet Pizza - best pizza slices in New York City

Koronet Pizza is located not too far from Columbia University, all the way up on West 111th Street, so similarly to Sal & Carmine Pizza, it’s quite a trek to get to (we actually took the subway up to this area as we’d already been walking for around six hours and had done nearly 30,000 steps!), but it’s worth it if you want good pizza!

Koronet Pizza - best pizza slices in New York City

The size of this pizza slice was positively enormous and it was actually the last place we visited on the first day of our pizza tour, so by that stage, we were both absolutely stuffed already! However, we remained strong to the end and managed to tackle this mammoth slice and I’m glad we did because it was lovely.

It had tonnes of pepperoni on it and was great value for money, especially considering its size. My only little qualm about it was that the crust was a little too crisp, but the actual base was perfect so all in all, a very good pizza slice!

6. East Village Pizza – 8.8

East Village Pizza New York

We actually visited East Village Pizza on three separate occasions during our one-month stay in New York, largely because it was less than 10 minutes from our apartment in the East Village and also because they offer pretty bloody good pizza, as well as numerous other carb-loaded goodies!

East Village Pizza cheesy garlic knots with parm and pepperoni

I didn’t include this factor in the pizza slice rankings, but East Village Pizza are infamous all over the likes of Instagram and TikTok for their garlic knots which we tried twice (the cheesy garlic knots with parm and pepperoni cannot be missed while you’re in the city!), so I just wanted to mention this briefly here if you wanted to try something other than a standard slice of pizza while you’re there!

East Village Pizza New York

The pizza slices are great and there’s plenty of pepperoni on each slice which is always a bonus. The base/crust is a little dry though, but I think it depends on when you visit as to how fresh the slices are. Overall, it’s still a fantastic slice of pizza in NYC, but it’s worth bearing in mind that it might not always taste mega fresh out of the oven.

7. Prince St Pizza – 8.7

Prince Street Pizza

Prince St Pizza was Matt’s number one favourite pizza slice out of every single one we tried, but unfortunately, it wasn’t my favourite which is why it’s not closer to the top of this list.

The pizza itself is very tasty and is topped with more than enough pepperoni, but there was a 20-minute wait which is definitely a good thing as it means that it’s very popular and people really love it, but I personally didn’t think it warranted such a long queue.

Prince Street Pizza

The tomato sauce on the Prince St Pizza slice was definitely the best out of all the slices we tried in New York, but the pepperoni tasted a little too burnt for my liking and I much prefer triangle slices rather than the Sicilian squares.

Prince St Pizza is actually incredibly favoured amongst many celebrities and inside the pizzeria, you’ll see hundreds of photos of famous people who have frequented it over the years; it’s very cool to see!

8. My Pie Pizzeria Romana – 8.6

My Pie Pizzeria Romana slice

Even though My Pie Pizzeria Romano ranks at number 8 on this list, we actually ended up eating a slice of pizza there on two separate occasions as it was pretty delicious, just not quite as good as some of the other ones!

One thing in particular that I really liked about this particular New York slice is that it’s super long but it was cut in half which made it so much easier to eat. While it might not seem like the biggest deal to some people, after trying many slices of pizza, these kinds of factors really make a slice stand out! 😂

9. Bleecker Street Pizza – 8.5 – best pizza slices in Manhattan

Bleecker Street Pizza - best pizza slices in New York City

I rated Bleecker Street Pizza higher than Matt did as he wasn’t the biggest fan of the base or crust, and while I would have preferred it to not be quite so crispy, I still thought the pizza slice as a whole was delicious.

Similarly to both Joe’s Pizza and Prince St Pizza, Bleecker Street Pizza is another place in New York that’s very popular amongst celebrities. While I don’t rate it quite as highly as the other two, I still think it’s worth trying a slice while you’re there. The crust isn’t the best, but I think the pepperoni was pretty good.

It’s also a pretty sizeable slice which makes it great for sharing if you want to create your own similar pizza tour around New York.

10. Mama’s Too Pizza – 8.4

Mamas Too Pizza New York

When I first saw the slice of pizza at Mama’s Too, I was convinced that I really wasn’t going to enjoy it as it looked both too burnt on the crust and a bit too sloppy on the slice. However, it just proves that looks can be deceiving as I actually ended up liking Mama’s Too more than Matt.

Mamas Too Pizza New York

I did, however, think that it was a little too pricey for what you get. There are a good few other slices on this list that are comparably priced but you get much more for your money, whereas I think this slice was a little small for $5.75.

11. Village Square Pizza – 8.3

Village Square Pizza New York

Village Square Pizza is just one block away from East Village Pizza so it was also not too far from our apartment in the East Village, which is why I wanted to love it so much, but unfortunately, it just wasn’t quite up to scratch as many of the other New York slices on this list.

Village Square Pizza slice

The flavours of the cheese and tomato were very tasty, but as you can see from the picture above, the pepperoni and the crust were a bit too burnt which is why we didn’t give it the highest rating.

Overall, it’s a pretty yummy slice, but just not the absolute best in New York, in my opinion.

12. Artichoke Pizza East 14th Street – 8.2

Artichoke Pizza slice

Artichoke Pizza was one of our last stops on our pizza tour of New York and it wasn’t actually on my original list of the best pizza slices in NYC, but after I posted my first Instagram Reel of our pizza tour, several people mentioned Artichoke, so we decided to give it a whirl ourselves.

Unfortunately, we didn’t rate it quite as high as other people seemed to and while it was perfectly tasty and it was a huge slice, it just didn’t stand out enough for us to rank it higher on the list!

13. Scarr’s Pizza – 8.1 – best pizza slices in Manhattan

Scarr's Pizza - best pizza slices in New York City

Scarr’s Pizza was another place that Matt ranked much higher than I did and while I thought it was tasty enough, I just found it far too sloppy and actually quite difficult to eat. All the toppings immediately started to slide off and you can see from the picture above before we’d even taken a bite out of it, that everything was already sliding off.

It was also one of the more expensive pizza slices we had in New York and we had to wait 20 minutes for them to cook a fresh pizza pie as they had run out when we visited at around 6pm. We didn’t mind waiting too much as we knew we wanted to try it out, but I wasn’t overly impressed by it to warrant the long wait.

14. Ray’s Pizza – 7

Rays Pizza New York

Ray’s Pizza is yet another super popular pizza joint in NYC, especially when it comes to pop culture on TV shows and movies such as Friends, Seinfeld and Elf, so I had super high hopes for this world-renowned pizza.

Unfortunately, we didn’t rate it nearly as highly as my beloved TV shows and I was actually quite disappointed by it.

Rays Pizza New York

Firstly, it was by far the most expensive slice of pizza we had at a whopping $7.05! The cheese was also really not the best, I think it had ricotta cheese on it as well as regular mozzarella and I really wasn’t a big fan of this. However, I thought the pepperoni was pretty tasty and I actually really quite liked the crust and base, but I thought it was way too expensive for what it was.

Ray’s Pizza also has many different locations throughout the city, so perhaps other branches might be better than the one we went to on 7th Avenue.

15. 2 Bros. Pizza – 6.1

2 Bros Pizza New York

And finally, we have 2 Bros Pizza which was by far the worst slice of pizza we ate in New York. Literally the only thing it had going for it was that it was only $1 for a huge cheese slice (we decided to get a cheese slice at 2 Bros as it was only a dollar, compared to pepperoni which was around $5-$6 a slice).

2 Bros Pizza New York The Best Pizza Slices In Manhattan - RANKED

I actually think it would have been much nicer if it was piping hot, but as there were constantly people queuing for the cheap slice, they didn’t warm them up like other places did so it was freezing cold and while I enjoy cold leftover pizza, if I’m paying for fresh pizza, I want it to actually taste fresh!

They also have several branches around New York and we only tried the one on 8th Ave, so I can’t comment on how the other branches perform.

Bonus best pizza in Manhattan (that is on my list to try!)

This list of the best pizza places in Manhattan obviously isn’t exhaustive as I haven’t tried every single New York pizza slice (yet!), so I’ve also included a few more recommendations below that I’ve received from members of my New York Facebook Group!

Best pizza in New York Manhattan – conclusion

As you can see, there are so many incredible pizza places in Manhattan, but if I had to narrow it down to just a few, I would say that Joe’s Pizza, Sal and Carmine, and Two Boots Pizza are all up there as some of the best NYC pizza in Manhattan!
