Patisserie Valerie

Every month, my grandma and I head out somewhere nice for food and a catch-up. It’s so lovely to spend some alone time with grandma, especially as she has eight grandchildren, and with me being the eldest, it can sometimes be difficult to spend that quality time with her.

Last week, we headed to Patisserie Valerie at York Designer Outlet (this store has now closed, but you can still enjoy Patisserie Valerie afternoon tea at the York city centre outlet) for afternoon tea.

Afternoon tea is actually one of my favourite things ever. In fact, it’s my dream to own my own afternoon tea shop when I retire, so naturally, I was delighted when my grandma suggested we go there for something yummy to eat.

If you’re thinking of indulging in the ultimate sweet treat experience, check out my review of Patisserie Valerie afternoon tea in York!

We ordered the Patisserie Valerie Afternoon Tea for Two, which at £25 for two people is incredibly good value for money, especially considering how delicious everything was! We started off by ordering a hot chocolate and a pot of tea which came in the cutest Patisserie Valerie mugs! The hot chocolate was absolutely delicious, and the tea was very refreshing!

The Patisserie Valerie afternoon tea menu in York consists of a selection of sandwiches, scones and yummy treats, all of which were beautifully presented on a cake stand. Being a blogger, I obviously had to take a picture before we could dive in; sorry grandma!

The selection of sandwiches included a range of smoked salmon, egg mayonnaise, ham and mustard, chicken and pesto with tomatoes, cucumber AND mini vegetable quiches! I couldn’t believe the wide variety of incredible fillings; they were so yummy (my favourite was probably the chicken).

I also like how the Patisserie Valerie afternoon tea sandwich selection isn’t overly adventurous. I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy afternoon tea in many places around the world and I usually find that the sandwich fillings are too fancy for my liking, so I love how Patisserie Valerie ensures that the sandwiches are delicious, without being too extravagant.

The next layer of the cake stand included two types of scones; two fruit scones and two plain scones, accompanied by a choice of jam and cream. The scones were still warm, buttery and deliciously crumbly; they were absolute perfection.

I’m not the biggest fan of fruit scones, but the plain scones were delightful and even though they’re probably my least favourite part of an afternoon tea menu, the ones on offer at Patisserie Valerie changed my mind somewhat!

Now it was time for the really good stuff: the cakes! We were greeted with a selection of chocolate eclairs, a Victoria sandwich, a mini chocolate mousse, a carrot and walnut cake and a mini mixed berry mousse. It was a true smorgasbord of decadent desserts and sugary sweets and they all looked incredibly appetising.

By this stage, however, we were getting pretty full so we decided to eat the eclairs and take the rest home! I left the carrot and walnut cake for my grandma to take home with her as I’m not really the biggest fan of that particular dessert, but I kindly offered to take the chocolate mousse and the Victoria sandwich off her hands!

I think it’s always a good sign of great food when you can’t quite finish everything and you need to take leftovers home. It shows that you’re still left wanting more and afternoon tea at Patisserie Valerie certainly achieved that!

We were also offered unlimited refills of our drinks and I’m definitely not one to say no to another hot chocolate! Our waiter was also incredibly lovely, and I’m afraid I didn’t quite catch his name but he was ever so helpful and accommodating!

I had such a lovely time at Patisserie Valerie, eating scrumptious cakes and catching up with my grandma, and I’d definitely recommend heading there if you’re looking for somewhere lovely to have afternoon tea!
