Coco Mill Carlisle - The Best Restaurants In Carlisle, Cumbria

Writing foodie recommendations and restaurant reviews are some of my favourite posts to write on my blog and after my two most recent visits to Coco Mill Carlisle, I just knew that I had to pen my thoughts on this incredible place to eat in Carlisle as they offer some of the best restaurant food I’ve had in a long time!

I’m excited to share my Coco Mill Carlisle review in today’s post as I think it’s one of the best places to eat in Carlisle and if you’re looking for yummy food, scrumptious cocktails, awesome waiting staff and a fab atmosphere to boot, keep reading to find out more!

P.S. I say this in pretty much every single one of my food review posts, but I apologise in advance for the terrible quality of these pictures; I never usually take my camera with me to restaurants so the pictures are taken on my poor-quality iPhone! Hopefully, you can still get the gist of how delicious everything was!

Cosmopolitan cocktail

Coco Mill is situated pretty much right in the centre of Carlisle so it’s a great location to eat if you’re planning to spend a full day/night in Carlisle exploring the city.

The restaurant is decorated with an industrial feel to it, with beautiful antiques everywhere, chunky wooden tables and vintage suitcases and other assorted furnishings. It has a truly lovely vibe to it and the wonderful staff make the whole dining experience so warm and inviting; I could happily spend hours on end eating and drinking at Coco Mill.

Both the food and drink menu at Coco Mill Carlisle is vast and extensive and I truly believe that there’s something for everyone. From craft beers to ciders to wines, spirits and fancy cocktails, plus plenty of soft drinks to choose from as well, you certainly won’t go thirsty!

On my most recent visit to the restaurant, I went for a Cosmopolitan cocktail which is probably my favourite alcoholic drink of all time. It’s certainly not the most affordable drink on the menu at £8.25, but it was truly delicious and I could have quite happily sipped these all night!

garlic mushroom bruschetta

Moving on to the food element of Coco Mill, I honestly can’t rave about the huge selection of incredible dishes enough. There really is something for everyone, so whether you’re a meat-eater, veggie or vegan, there’s something to suit everyone’s culinary preferences and requirements.

One thing that I love the most about the food at Coco Mill is that the portion sizes of pretty much every dish are remarkably generous, even the starters! My mum and I almost always order numerous starters to share whenever we go out for food and our most recent visit to Coco Mill was no exception.

While I did actually order a main as well (more on that below), we ordered a few starters between us to share as we were at the restaurant with my brother and sister-in-law as well.

First up we have the garlic mushroom bruschetta; a hearty helping of sourdough toast topped with creamy garlic mushrooms coated in a rich parmesan sauce. I often have a bit of a love/hate relationship with mushrooms, but I really can’t rave about this dish enough. Everything from the toast to the mushrooms to the sauce was utter perfection and if you love mushrooms, you simply have to order this from Coco Mill!

hoisin duck pancakes

Next, we have the hoisin duck pancakes which my grandma actually ordered as her main the first time we ever visited Coco Mill and she raved about them so much, that we had to order them the second time around.

Served with mini Chinese-style pancakes, delectable shredded duck, hoisin sauce and an assorted salad, these pancakes are an absolute dream starter. Again, the portion size of this dish is pretty generous and while you could probably eat one to yourself, I’d recommend ordering it to share and then getting a few other starters to share as well so that you get to try a bit of everything!

pulled beef and Yorkshire puddings

You guys probably all know by now how proud I am to be a Yorkshire lass, so whenever I see Yorkshire puddings on a menu at a restaurant, it’s basically my duty to order them! I’d actually tried the pulled beef and gravy on my first visit to Coco Mill when my brother ordered the pulled beef sub, but I was excited to try the meat and gravy with my beloved Yorkies and I’m delighted to say that they didn’t disappoint!

The gravy is unbelievably thick and flavoursome, it’s probably some of the nicest restaurant gravy I’ve ever had! The Yorkshire puddings were thick and crisp and the pulled beef was juicy and succulent; this starter really is an overall winner!

chicken parmo

After my stay at Blackwell Grange Hotel in Darlington a couple of months ago and eating at their on-site restaurant where I had the most delicious chicken parmo I’ve ever tasted, I’ve had a bit of a thing for finding something that comes close to how good that was, so when I saw a chicken parmo listed on the menu at Coco Mill, I knew that I wanted to order it for my main.

Unfortunately, the chicken parmo at Coco Mill turned out to be my least favourite dish of the evening as it was more of a fancy parmo than a traditional one. The potatoes were heavenly though and the tomato sauce coated on the melted mozzarella-topped chicken was really yummy. One thing that let this dish down somewhat was the seemingly neverending green beans and mangetout, but this is just because I’m really not a fan of those things so I would never usually serve them myself with any dish anyway!

While I did still very much enjoy the chicken parmo, I probably wouldn’t order it again, but that’s largely just because I have my eye on many other dishes on the menu as well, including the classic club sandwich (which I actually had on my first visit to Coco Mill and thoroughly enjoyed!), as well as the confit belly pork and the ale battered haddock.

I genuinely don’t think I could pick just one particular dish to recommend to you guys, but my advice for eating here, especially if you’re visiting with friends or family, would be to order as many starters as you fancy and share them with everyone! Apart from the prawn starters, I think I would happily order and eat every single one of the starters at Coco Mill and there are 10 to choose from!

If you’re looking for a brilliant restaurant in Carlisle, I genuinely couldn’t recommend Coco Mill enough; it’s a perfect place to eat for a celebratory meal, a cosy date night dinner or a relaxing evening with friends and family!
