If you’re looking for the best UK city breaks for couples to fuel your wanderlust for that perfect romantic weekend break with your partner, this post has something for you!
1. York – best UK city breaks for couples
Despite living in York for over 14 years now (give or take my little stints of travelling the world or living in New Zealand), it seems that my obsession with Jorvik knows no bounds.
I might be a tad prejudiced, but I truly believe that York is one of the best cities in the UK, if not in Europe, and it’s a place that I’ll always recommend to everyone.
With sights such as the York Minster, the Shambles and a whole host of museums and open spaces to enjoy, York is an absolute treat for people of all ages.
While you’re there, make sure to head to some of my favourite restaurants including Cosy Club, Ambiente and Cut and Craft.

2. Edinburgh
Aside from York, Edinburgh is probably my favourite place for a city break in the UK.
The Scottish capital is teeming with incredible history, fantastic nightlife and impeccable restaurants to boot.
Make sure to pay a visit to the infamous Edinburgh Castle, take a stroll down Victoria Street and head just out of the city centre to the beatific Dean Village for picturesque scenes.
Once you’re feeling peckish, tuck into a decadent smorgasbord of mash potato dishes at Makar’s Gourmet Mash Bar or design your own pizza at @Pizza; AKA one of the best pizzas I’ve had outside of Italy!

3. London
Including London in this list of the UK’s best city breaks might seem like a bit of a stretch as there’s so much to see and do in the capital, that it can be hard to narrow it down.
If you’ve only got a couple of days or even just one full day in London, make sure to head to all the classic tourist spots such as Westminster, Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London and the London Eye.
If you have a little longer to spend in the city, check out a show on the West End or step back in time and marvel at the wonders at the British Museum.

4. Bath – best city breaks in the UK
Renowned for the famous Roman Baths, this stunning city in the southwest of England is a must-visit if you’re looking for a city break jaunt in the UK.
With its impressive choice of luxurious spas, architecturally-appeasing Royal Crescent and of course, the incredible Roman Baths, it’s a place not to be missed and it’s a wonderful choice for a romantic UK city break.
5. Newcastle
I’ve only been to Newcastle once at the time of writing this post and if I’m being completely honest, it didn’t capture my heart the way I expected it to. However, that’s largely probably due to the fact that I visited just after the first lockdown was lifted in the UK in 2020 and very few things were open and back to normal again.
The nightlife in Newcastle is supposedly some of the very best in the country and if you’re looking to party on your weekend break, the Geordies are sure to show you a good time!
In terms of food, I can personally recommend Manjaros where I enjoyed a hearty and incredibly delicious chicken Parmo!
6. Liverpool
In terms of city breaks in the UK, Liverpool is consistently up there with some of the very best.
Famous for “birthing” the beloved Beatles, one of the most popular and best football teams in the world, as well as its very own cathedral and a handful of museums, you can easily spend a few days enjoying everything that this dockside city has to offer.
Visit the Royal Albert Docks, check out the city’s cathedral and immerse yourself in the nightlife scene, Liverpool is renowned for it, after all!
7. Manchester
Another football-centric city in the UK, but one that still offers something for everyone, Manchester is the perfect city break to enjoy as a couple, on your own or with the whole family.
With numerous art galleries and museums, plus ample shopping opportunities and incredible hotels such as The Lowry to luxuriate in, Manchester is an idyllic city break to enjoy come rain or shine.
The Northern Quarter is one of the best and most popular areas of the city and a tour of either the Etihad Stadium or Old Trafford is a must-do if you’re a football fanatic!
8. Cambridge
The famous and beloved university city isn’t just a hotspot for academics, it’s also a great place in the UK for a city break.
If you do want to dip into the educational side of the city, be sure to take a tour of at least one of the prestigious universities such as Trinity College or King’s College. Taking a punt along the River Cam is a must-do when in Cambridge, as is heading for some delicious street food at foodPark.
9. Oxford – top UK city breaks
Speaking of UK cities renowned for their academia, Oxford is another distinguished place for a lovely weekend break in the UK.
Fans of the Harry Potter franchise need to add a visit to Christ Church College, which you’ll recognise from several scenes in the films, including parts of Hogwarts.
Oxford is also celebrated for its eccentric pub scene, so be sure to grab a pint or two, plus some traditional British pub grub in one of the many established local jaunts.
10. Brighton
Brighton is one of the most vibrant and eclectic cities in the UK, home to the esteemed Brighton Pride, plus a plethora of wonderful eateries and fun seaside activities and entertainment.
The Lanes is a must-visit while in Brighton, as is a wander around the Royal Pavilion; a beautiful Grade I former royal residence, with its exotic domes and quirky interiors.
Purezza Pizza is one of the best places to eat in the city, with scrumptious vegan and vegetarian pizzas to indulge in. Be sure to grab an ice cream and then head for a walk along Brighton Pier afterwards!
11. Chester
When you think of the best UK city breaks for couples, the city of Chester probably slips under your radar, but that doesn’t mean to say that it’s not well worth a visit.
With its stunning Cathedral, city walls and Chester Castle, one could almost mistake it for York. If you’re travelling to the city with kids in tow, be sure to visit the highly coveted Chester Zoo; one of the UK’s largest and most popular zoos.
12. Cardiff
If you’re wanting to frequent another part of the UK, then a trip to the Welsh capital city is worth adding to your UK city break shortlist.
With the mighty Cardiff Castle, numerous museums and the beautiful Cardiff Bay, it’s a city that boasts ample things to see and do for everyone. The beautiful marina is the perfect place to eat, with an abundance of wonderful waterside restaurants, cafes and a smorgasbord of arcades to enjoy once you’ve stuffed yourself with some delectable seafood.
Taking a Hop-on Hop-off Bus Tour is a great way to explore Cardiff if you’ve only got one day in the city as you can see many of the top sights and attractions.

13. Belfast – best city breaks in the UK
A trip over the Irish Sea to Northern Ireland will take you to the capital city, Belfast. Here, you’ll want to explore the Titanic Quarter where you’ll find the Titanic Belfast, a museum dedicated to the story of the 1912 disaster that resembles a ship’s hull.
Also home to the beautiful Botanic Gardens, plus incredible museums such as the Ulster Museum, as well as the bustling St George’s Market, a thriving indoor establishment home to more than 300 traders, vendors and food stalls, Belfast is a UK city that’s not to be missed.
14. Leeds
Leeds is probably most famed for its vast and varied shopping centres, including the Trinity Centre and the Victoria Quarter, as well as its awesome selection of local and exotic restaurants and fantastic nightlife, but it’s also a haven for culture-vultures as well.
Leeds’ live music scene is one of the best in the country, with ample local venues, plus larger arenas and theatres for you to lend your ear to both local sounds and some of the world’s most established performers.
15. Durham
Durham Cathedral is one of the most beloved religious buildings in the UK and it’s easy to see why once you feast your eyes upon its magnificent grandeur.
The city is also home to Durham Castle, which has been occupied as the city’s university since 1837. If you’re looking to spend a bit more time outdoors during your visit to Durham, head to the University’s Botanic Garden, set upon 25 acres of majestic woodland.
16. Ripon – best UK city breaks for couples
Ripon is another UK city that’s often bypassed as it’s not particularly imposing, but after our visit there for the first time last year, I fell in love with the tiny cathedral city.
Aside from the magnificent cathedral, pay a visit to Market Place, where you’ll find plenty of local vendors selling their variety of produce, or take a stroll through the Spa Gardens or along the canal if it’s a nice day. If you’ve got a bit more time on your city break to Ripon, definitely head to Fountains Abbey; one of the most incredible feats of history and architecture I’ve discovered in the UK so far!
Check out more things to do in Ripon here.
17. Lincoln
Yet another UK cathedral city, Lincoln’s offering is vast and imposing and Lincoln Castle is also a must-see while you’re in the city; home to a Victorian prison and a copy of the Magna Carta.
In terms of the foodie scene, Lincoln’s Ole Ole Tapas Bar is essential for food lovers looking to tuck into quintessentially Spanish cuisine.
18. Glasgow
When I first visited Glasgow last year, I was surprised to discover that I didn’t love it as much as I expected to after hearing other people thoroughly enjoy it as a UK city break.
However, there’s still plenty to see and do in the city, including Glasgow Cathedral and the Necropolis, as well as the Glasgow Science Centre, the Riverside Museum and the Gallery of Modern Art.

The food scene in Bristol is remarkably varied, with fusion-inspired restaurants offering delicacies from everywhere from Sri Lanka, to the Middle East, to more local creations.
