Walking holidays often have connotations as being aimed more towards an older generation, but when you consider the number of incredible places in the world that offer perfect walking holiday opportunities, it’s fair to say that it’s something people of all ages can enjoy.

If you’re thinking about taking part in a walking holiday for your next adventure, I’ve put together this list of the best Spanish walking holidays. Spain is one of the best places in Europe to enjoy a walking holiday, with places such as the Camino de Santiago taking pride of place for one of the most famous pilgrimages in the world.

There will also likely be some surprises in this guide for epic places to enjoy a walking holiday, including some of Spain’s most beloved islands such as Ibiza, Tenerife and Mallorca.

Camino de Santiago – best Spanish walking holidays

The Camino de Santiago is a Spanish walking holiday that cannot be missed. While it is usually a pilgrimage for religious believers to embark upon, it’s also a holiday that people can take part in purely for enjoyment purposes.

There are various routes that you can take along the Camino de Santiago, including along the quieter Portuguese Way, which still offers unparalleled beauty.

Traverse through stunning forest trails, down winding country lanes and embark upon the only water-based pilgrimage route in the world as you make your way across a spectacular riverboat journey.

You don’t have to be religious to enjoy the Camino de Santiago walk and I think that’s what makes it so incredible.

Andalucia

Andalucia is a stunning part of the country and is certainly one of the best Spanish walking holidays featured on this list.

Located near the border of Portugal, the area of Aracena Sierra is full of lush woodland, glorious views and stunning natural landscapes. If you’re after a walking holiday that invites you into a more local way of life, an adventure in Andalucia will be perfect for you.

Tenerife

There are several walking holidays you can enjoy across Tenerife’s vast and varied terrain.

From remarkable volcanic territory to picturesque towns such as Garachico to Mount Teide, the highest peak in Spain, the island of Tenerife is a place in Spain that I’ve wanted to visit for a long time and its incredible offering of walking holiday opportunities has only cemented my wanderlust even more.

Ibiza

While Ibiza is usually more synonymous with its electric party scene, the White Island also has some incredible walking holiday opportunities.

If a party holiday isn’t on your agenda, fear not, as Ibiza’s stunning white-sand beaches, hidden coves and dreamy lagoons are heavily featured throughout a walking holiday. It’s ideal for those looking for a slower, more relaxed vibe, while still enjoying the activity of walking throughout the holiday.

Pyrenees – best Spanish walking holidays

The Pyrenees are an incredibly vast mountain range that extend almost 500km across Spain and France, making it an ideal area for a walking holiday thanks to its many hiking trails.

You can explore abundant hills and mountain vistas, as well as the rugged coastline, quintessentially Spanish towns and villages and some routes even take you to the gastronomy capital of San Sebastián.

I’d never really considered the Pyrenees as an area of interest when visiting Spain, but after realising how many beautiful places reside along this remarkable mountain range, I’m now incredibly eager to go!

Menorca (Minorca)

The island of Menorca (Minorca) is not to be confused with the island of Majorca (Mallorca) and while I’ve been to the latter many times, I’m really surprised I’ve not been to Menorca just yet as it looks and sounds absolutely wonderful.

Known for being less intense and more serene than its big sister, the island of Menorca offers visitors ample opportunity to traverse across its alluring fishing villages, dreamy sandy beaches and of course, the chance to experience some of Spain’s most wonderfully diverse cuisines and fine wines.

Lanzarote

Lanzarote is another Spanish island that’s usually most synonymous with holidaymakers looking for a week or two in the sun and while it’s perfect for that kind of break, it’s also an awesome island for walkers.

The volcanic island has some of the most stunning coastlines in Spain, but it’s also very reminiscent of North African terrain so the combination of the two makes it a wonderful place to visit and wander around while exploring the beautiful landscapes, vineyards and sea views.

Alicante

Life in Alicante moves at a slower pace than its neighbouring tourist traps such as Benidorm and it’s here that you’ll find dramatic landscapes, towering mountains and beautiful vistas.

The sun will still be present, so if you do want to enjoy a more relaxed pace, you’ll still be able to relax and unwind at your hotel, but you get the best of both worlds by having the luxury of unwinding, as well as traversing across breathtaking landscapes when it suits you.

Mallorca

Mallorca (or Majorca) is a place that I’ve been lucky enough to frequent numerous times over the years, both with my family when I was younger and most recently with Matt in 2017. However, despite visiting the stunning island several times already, I’ve never really ventured far off the beaten tourist track, so a holiday to the island centred around the outdoors is definitely in order.

With a walking holiday in Mallorca, you’ll get to experience the island’s rugged coastline for many miles, admire sheer cliff drops, cover expansive mountain vistas and enjoy the most adorable villages surrounded by beautiful lemon and orange trees. I can literally feel the warmth on my skin as I type this!
