Is August a good time to go to New York?
August is a great month to visit New York City if you want to experience the city in all its summer glory! The sun will be shining (a lot of the time, anyway!), the streets and parks will be bustling with locals enjoying the long days and nights and there are plenty of fun activities and events to get stuck into!
Despite being at the height of the summer months, hotel prices in August in NYC aren’t outrageously expensive, so it’s a good time to visit if you want to avoid the extortionate prices of the busy festive months between October and December!
New York in August weather

The New York temperature in August ranges from around 27°C (80°F) to 29° (84°F) daily, with lows of around 19°C towards the end of the month, usually on an evening.
Highs of late 20s°C makes visiting New York in August very warm, humid and muggy a lot of the time, so it’s a good idea to pack plenty of light clothing and stay as hydrated as possible!
While the temperature in August in NYC is certainly very warm throughout the whole month, the hot air and humidity also vastly increase the chances of thunderstorms/rain and there’s a whopping 35% chance of daily rain at the beginning of the month! However, it’s important to note that this chance of rain just means at some point during the day and not necessarily that it will be raining all day long.
You can check more in-depth, historical weather data on the Weather Spark website which is my go-to resource for all things weather all around the world! I would also recommend downloading the Meteoblue app on your mobile device as I’ve found this to be by far the most reliable weather forecast app out there!

Enjoy the views from the city’s observation decks
Of course, New York’s observation decks can be enjoyed at any time of the year (all five of the city’s observation decks are open almost 365 days a year), but I personally think that the summer months are the best time to experience them in all their glory thanks to the longer days, brighter nights and (mostly!) better weather!
My personal favourite New York observation decks are Summit One Vanderbilt and the Top of the Rock, but I think it’s worth checking them all out to decide your own favourite!

What to wear in New York City in August
As August is one of the hottest months of the year in New York City, it’s a good idea to be prepared with warm weather-appropriate clothing such as t-shirts, shorts, skirts, dresses etc.
While you might be tempted to wear sandals or flip flops as a result of the warm weather, I would personally advise against this when walking around New York City as you’ll likely be doing a lot of walking (my record for the most number of steps in one day currently stands at 37,000 steps!), so comfortable trainers or walking boots would be a much better option.
As always, I would recommend bringing a suitable day backpack and/or bumbag to carry all your personal belongings. My go-to options are the Osprey backpack and the Eastpak bumbag; I’ve used both of these in over 50 countries around the world since I first started travelling full-time in 2019 and I would highly recommend them both!
I would also recommend packing a lightweight, waterproof jacket as there is a good chance of rain in NYC in August and it’s always better to be prepared!
Conclusion – New York in August 2025
I really hope that you found this guide to visiting NYC in August useful and I hope it’s given you plenty of inspiration of all the best New York in August events, things to do and advice about the weather and what to pack!
