I thought 2019 and 2020 were huge travel years for me, but 2022 was probably my biggest adventure yet!
Matt and I visited 20 countries in 2022, with 16 of those being new countries! While 2021 was a little slow on the international travel front (due to You Know What), I think we more than made up for it in 2022 and we visited so many incredible places, made so many wonderful memories and embarked on some true bucket list-worthy trips.
I am so grateful for the many travel opportunities we’ve enjoyed this year, from spending one month living in New York at the start of the year to embarking on a cross-country USA road trip to heading off on our first cruise to living in Mexico, Croatia and Cyprus for a month each, as well as plenty of other destinations thrown into the mix as well!
These travel photo posts are always more of a diary for me to refer back to in years to come, but I also thoroughly hope you guys enjoy seeing what we got up to this year as well!
USA – my year in travel photos in 2022

We started 2022 by celebrating the New Year in my favourite place in the world; New York City!
We spent a month in NYC from the 16th of December 2021 to mid-January 2022 before embarking on an epic 16-state USA road trip from New York to California. It took us precisely two months to get across the country and we visited places such as Virginia (to stay with my family for a week), South Carolina, Florida, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Arizona and more.
We also returned back to the US after our time in Canada to spend three days in Chicago, but I was incredibly unwell during that trip, so I’d love to go back there again one day.
And as utterly amazing as our road trip was, there are many places I still want to visit in America, so I know that it certainly won’t be our last visit!

Mexico

After an incredibly busy three months in America, we flew to Mexico in mid-March for 6 weeks.
We stayed in an apartment in Playa del Carmen for one month where we spent a lot of time working and eating. It was also my 24th birthday while we were in Playa and my mum and little sister flew out to see us for a few days.
We had the most amazing time together and I will never, ever take for granted the opportunity to travel with my loved ones.
Once my mum and sister had flown home, we left Playa del Carmen and spend two days in Bacalar before flying to Mexico City for a few days. We fell in love with Mexico City, especially with the food, and it’s somewhere I’d definitely love to return to one day.
Caribbean cruise

We flew from Mexico City via Trinidad and Tobago and Miami to Barbados where we spent a few nights before embarking on our first-ever cruise around the Caribbean.
We wanted a way of travelling around the Caribbean islands without spending a fortune on flights and accommodation, so Matt found an incredible deal where we paid just over £400 each for a 10-day Caribbean cruise.
The cruise departed from Barbados and concluded in Galveston , Texas, and stopped in Grenada, Bonaire, Curaçao, Panama, Costa Rica and Cozumel in Mexico along the way.
I didn’t anticipate going on a cruise until I was at least 60+ years old, but it was truly one of the best travel experiences of my life and something that I’m very keen to do again already!
Canada

Once the cruise ship docked in Texas, we then flew to Chicago for a couple of days (where I was really unwell) and then we flew to Toronto in Canada.
It was our first time in Canada, but it certainly won’t be our last as we absolutely loved the Canadian hospitality and there are still so many other amazing places to visit in the vast North American country.
We did a day trip to Niagara Falls which definitely exceeded my expectations and then it was time for us to return home to the UK after almost five months away…
UK – my year in travel photos in 2022

We spent most of the summer in the UK, seeing family, attending friends’ weddings, christenings and birthdays and catching up on some work.
I spent a lot of time in Carlisle with my parents and brothers and sister, as well as my adorable little niece and I also visited my family in Doncaster and York many times as well. I’m so lucky to have family all over the world and it means so much to me to be able to spend quality time with them when we’re back in the UK.
While we were in England, I also visited places such as Sheffield, Center Parcs, Manchester , Leeds and London for various events and parties with friends and family. It was a very good summer, especially after the last couple of years and it was so nice to spend so much time with everyone!
Belgium

At the beginning of August, we headed off on a 2-week interrailing trip through Europe. Our first stop was Brussels in Belgium for two nights.
It was my first time in Brussels and Belgium as a whole and even though we were only there for a couple of days, I fell in love with this beautiful city, particularly the food!
Germany

We then took the train to Germany which was another new country for me and I already cannot wait to go back as I loved it so much!
We spent three days in Munich and had an amazing time eating lots of scrumptious food, drinking wine and exploring the gorgeous city.
Austria

Austria was yet another new country for me and our two days in Vienna were so much fun! We went in the summer, but I’ve heard so many good things about Austria during the winter, so I’d definitely like to go back to explore all the Christmas markets.
Hungary

Towards the end of our interrailing trip, we headed back to Budapest for the second time (we first went in 2017) to attend the Sziget Festival.
It was my first-ever festival and it was a very full-on six days, but it was such a brilliant experience and one that I’m very glad we made time for this summer!
Slovakia – my year in travel photos in 2022

To conclude our summer interrailing trip, we spent one night in Bratislava in Slovakia which definitely wasn’t enough time to see and do everything, but it gave us a good taste of this awesome city.
Scotland road trip

After a few weeks at home for more family and friends’ birthdays, weddings and christenings, we headed on our first proper campervan trip of the year to Scotland in our self-converted campervan.
We spent five days completing the NC500 road trip route through the Scottish Highlands which was a very cold, but very fun and memorable trip and one that I’d highly recommend if you’re looking for some UK travel inspiration for 2023!
Poland

At the beginning of October, we visited Poland for the first time when we spent 3 days in the gorgeous city of Gdańsk.
I found super cheap flights and accommodation, so it only made sense to squeeze in yet another place that we’d wanted to visit for a while and it definitely lived up to our expectations!
Croatia

Croatia is a place that I’d wanted to visit for so many years, so in mid-October, we spent three days in the stunning city of Dubrovnik before going to Split for one month.
Dubrovnik completely exceeded my expectations and apart from the fact that it’s very expensive, it’s probably one of my favourite cities in Europe!
Our month in Split was also such a fantastic time and it’s definitely a place we’ll return to for an extended stay again one day in the future as we loved it so much.
Cyprus – my year in travel photos in 2022

To conclude our travels in 2022, we spent one month in Paphos, Cyprus to enjoy the last bit of winter sunshine before heading back to the UK for Christmas and New Year.
I didn’t adore Paphos as much as I loved many of the other European cities that we visited in 2022, but it was a great place to enjoy the winter sunshine and it was pretty cheap to spend a month there, so it was a great option for us!
2022 was one of the biggest years of travel we’ve enjoyed so far and I’m beyond grateful for all the wonderful places we’ve visited and all the remarkable memories we’ve made this year. We have big plans for 2023 as well and I don’t think we’re in a rush to stop travelling any time soon, so I can’t wait to see where the next year takes us!
Tune in again this time next year to see what we get up to!
