I feel like I owe you all a huge apology for being a terrible blogger over the last month. I’ve only written four posts in four weeks and I can’t believe how bad I’ve been; however, I can assure you it’s not because I’ve lost my passion or interest in it.
Quite the opposite actually.
If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen that just before Christmas I left my day job as a digital marketing executive to take my freelance travel writing and travel blog full time. As I’ve been preparing to do this, it’s involved an awful lot of hard work behind the scenes, which incidentally means that not a lot of content has gone out. However, now that Christmas is over and I’m officially full time freelance (eek!), I have SO many plans for this little blog and a plethora of things I want to achieve before we go travelling in April.
With that in mind, it’s now less than four months until we depart for our trip around the world; here’s where we are with preparations and plans for our trip!
I left my job!
As of December 21st, I officially became “unemployed”; as in, I don’t have a ‘desk job’ to go to anymore…
The last few weeks before I left my job were a little tense and nervous for me as I began to panic whether I’d done the right thing, but I know in my heart that I absolutely have.
I adored my job in digital marketing, particularly because I met SO many incredible people, and I also learned a number of skills that I’ve been able to transfer to my freelance and blogging career.
While I am technically freelance now, I don’t want to class myself as a full time freelancer until the beginning of January, so all the work I’m doing between now and then is sort of the behind the scenes preparation work.
We wrote our travel equipment wish list…
Over the past few months, I’ve read dozens of posts about what you need to take travelling and it’s quite unbelievable just how varied each and every person’s opinion is. However, I think we managed to nail a good list of things that we need to take with us, so we compiled it into a huge list and sent it round to our families (or Santa…) for ideas for our Christmas presents.
Being in the travel industry, one of the most common things I’ve read about packing lists for long travel trips, is that you’ll always end up taking way more than you actually need.
While I’m sure we’ll still probably end up doing this, I’ve really tried to be conscious of not including too much in our packing list.
…And received lots of goodies for Christmas!
As we didn’t really want anything else at all for Christmas apart from useful travel items, our family and friends were incredible with the thoughtful travel gifts they bought us.
Matt received his backpack from his dad (we’re going to get matching ones) and we also received plenty of boring but incredibly useful items such as a first aid kit, water purifier, travel towels and travel adapter plugs, as well as lots of fun travel gifts too.
I’m obviously going to put together an entire post of exactly what we’re taking with us, but hopefully this post will give you some idea of just some of the things we need to take on our trip around the world.
Made a detailed savings plan
I’m pretty lucky that I’ve always been really good at saving money. Ever since I was little, any pocket money that I received, I always put away into a piggy bank or a safe place until there was something that I wanted to save up to buy.
Thankfully, I’ve carried this habit with me into my twenties, which has made saving for travelling much easier that it could have otherwise been.
While we’ve been properly saving for a good year or so now, as we’re only four months away from our trip and Christmas is officially over, I’m determined to knuckle down even more and save as much money as I physically can.
I’ve put together a structured savings plan of how much more money I want to save before we set off and I know with plenty of hard work and a little determination, I can get there!
We’re just a few days away from 2019 which means we’ll be slowly approaching single figures of the number of weeks until we depart! I can’t believe how quickly it’s coming around, and I’m determined to make the most of our time left in the UK before we go.
Our trip around the world is something that I’ve been looking forward to for many years now and I can’t believe how close it is!
