The Top of the Rock is my favourite observation deck in New York City and it’s also one of the best places to enjoy the sunset and then stay at the top of the observatory to admire NYC at night from its incredible vantage point in Midtown Manhattan.

The Top of the Rock Observation Deck is open daily until midnight, so it’s an activity that you can enjoy well into the night if you don’t want to head up for sunset.

Go on a sunset cruise to see the Statue of Liberty - New York at night activities

A sunset cruise to see the Statue of Liberty is one of the best ways to spend an evening in New York as you’ll get to see the iconic New York landmark, as well as the breathtaking Manhattan skyline, both at sunset and as the night falls.

There are several ways to enjoy a sunset cruise to see the Statue of Liberty, including a tour to Liberty Island and Ellis Island with Statue City Cruises (the only official authorised tour provider that takes you to both islands).

You can also purchase a one-hour sunset cruise along the East River, underneath the Manhattan Bridge and the Brooklyn Bridge, past the One Word Trade Center and the Lower Manhattan skyline, as well as around the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

Alternatively, you can ride the Staten Island Ferry for free at any time of the day/night. This ferry departs from Whitehall Terminal in Manhattan and takes you to St. George Terminal on Staten Island in about 25 minutes. This is a great option if you want to experience the best free things to do in New York at night.

With its awesome location in Midtown Manhattan, Summit One Vanderbilt offers incredible views of the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building and even all the way Downtown to the One World Trade Center.

Summit is more than just an observation deck; it’s an incredibly cool and immersive experience with various rooms and exhibitions to explore as you take in the incredible views of Manhattan from the floor-to-ceiling windows.

I’d recommend heading to Summit One Vanderbilt in time for sunset, so that you can enjoy the views during the day, at sunset and into the night.

Bonus: If you want to enjoy even more views of New York at night from an incredible height, check out the observation decks at the Empire State Building, Edge and One World Observatory!

10. Visit the Queens Night Market – New York at night activities

For one of the best NYC night markets, head to the Queens Night Market for an abundance of delicious food, quirky trinket stalls, local vendors and so much more!

Located in the borough of Queens, from 5 PM to midnight on select dates between April and October (check the website for full details on the schedule), the Queens Night Market hosts some truly fantastic food, drink, and artisanal market stalls.

While it is a little trek to get to from Manhattan (approximately 45 minutes on the subway from Times Square), the Queens Night Market is one of the best New York night time activities if you want to explore somewhere a little off the beaten path in NYC.

The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the most iconic structures in NYC and it’s an absolute marvel to see in NYC by night.

12. Watch a movie at Bryant Park – what to do in New York at night

Bryant Park is usually more synonymous with daytime activities, but it’s also one of the best places to go in New York at night during the summer months when its lawn plays host to outdoor movie nights!

From June to August, every Monday evening, Bryant Park hosts an incredible lineup of movies, ranging from old classics to brand-new releases! It’s completely free to attend, as long as you arrive before 5 PM to secure a seat on the lawn before the movie starts at 8 PM.

Food and drink can be purchased from the on-site vendors and you can bring your own blanket (tables and chairs are not permitted).

13. Enjoy the views from One World Observatory

One World Observatory

16. Go on a Hop-on Hop-off Bus Tour

I always recommend taking a hop-on hop-off bus tour to any first-time visitors to NYC as I think it’s one of the best ways to see so much of the city in one or two days. Some of my fondest memories of my first trips to New York with my mum are when we took a hop-on hop-off bus tour, both during the day and at night, so it’s something I always recommend when people ask me what to do at night in NYC.

The High Line

Built on an elevated abandoned railway that runs along the west side of Manhattan from Gansevoort Street to West 34th Street at Hudson Yards, The High Line is one of the most unique and coolest things to do in New York at night.

While most people would encourage a visit during the day, The High Line is arguably just as fun at night, especially during the summer months when it’s open late into the evening so you can avoid the hectic crowds during the day.

If you begin your evening walk along The High Line at Gansevoort Street, be sure to stop at Chelsea Market for a bite to eat before continuing along the 1.45-mile long trail.

There are several comedy shows that you can attend in New York, with the most famous being the Comedy Cellar in the West Village, just a couple of blocks from Washington Square Park. Hundreds of world-class comedians have performed at the Comedy Cellar over the years.

I’ve also spent an evening in NYC at The Grisly Pear which is just a few doors down from the Comedy Cellar and it was such a fun thing to do in New York at night!

19. Ride the Roosevelt Island Tramway

Roosevelt Island Tramway

For one of the best and cheap things to do in New York at night, I’d highly recommend riding the Roosevelt Island Tramway.

For the same price as a one-way journey on the New York subway ($2.90), you can ride the Roosevelt Island Tramway from East 60th Street in Manhattan over the East River to Roosevelt Island.

This is an activity that can be enjoyed both during the day and at night in New York, but I would recommend taking the Tramway over to Roosevelt Island in time for sunset, then head to the Panorama Room rooftop bar at the top of the Graduate Hotel for a cocktail before taking the Tramway back to Manhattan at night!

If you skip the cocktails at the Panorama Room and just take the Roosevelt Island Tramway both ways for just $5.80, this is one of the best cheap things to do in New York at night.
