Airports

OK, so I’m sure you’re all probably bored of hearing about the fact that I’m in Venice at the moment but I’ve completely fallen in love with this incredible place. It’s way more idyllic than I imagined it to be and everywhere you look, there’s another gorgeous sight to be seen. From the bountiful canals and gondolas, to the exceptional Gelato and pasta dishes, Venice has well and truly captured my heart.

One of my favourite parts of going on holiday is actually spending time at the airport before I fly. I know for many people that killing two or three hours inside an airport is basically something that is an annoying necessity to get to the desired location. However, I absolutely bloody love them!

Here’s a list of things that people who love airports will understand.

1. The people-watching – people who love airports

I definitely inherited this trait from my mum, but I really love spending time people-watching, especially at airports. Everyone always seems so eager to board their flight and escape their mundane lives for a week in the sun. I love seeing couples excited for their first holiday together, or the kids that are being wheeled around on their Trunkies, barely able to conceal their joy. The arrivals gate is always filled with people picking up their loved ones or a stag do that looks a little worse for wear. Either way, there’s something almost magical about seeing so many different people and wondering where they’re going and where they’ve been. It also always makes me feel glamorous and sophisticated whenever it’s my turn to board the flight; I’m obviously not (lol) but it’s nice to feel that you’re about to step onto an aeroplane that’s going to transport you somewhere entirely different.

2. Duty Free

I bloody love shopping at Duty Free, there’s something entirely liberating about spending an entirely insane amount of money on things that you probably (definitely) don’t need! Also, just walking through the perfume department and trying on approximately 47 different perfumes to make sure you’re set for your adventure is something that I love to do. There are always some great bargains to be found at Duty Free, especially in the food and alcohol section and it’s such a delight stocking up on abnormally large size Toblerone for no reason at all!

3. The food – people who love airports

While the airport might not serve world-class, 5* food, there’s something so exciting about having a Burger King at 6 AM when you absolutely wouldn’t in any other situation. The fact that your holiday is about to start means that you can start pigging out as soon as you’ve checked in! Grab a delicious burger and fries and if you’re feeling exceptionally decadent, nab some fresh pancakes while you’re at it and make sure your holiday is off to a truly luxurious start!

4. Watching the endless planes take off

Okay, so this one might be more appropriate if you’re six years old, but I still get so excited at watching all the planes take off and land. Getting the obligatory plane pic for the ‘gram is also an absolute must. Sure, there might be a million and one plane pics circulating on Instagram at any given time but that doesn’t mean you can’t join in on the fun and snap a few more! There’s something so incredibly Instagrammable about flying and airports and if you manage to get that perfect Insta-worthy shot then you’re on to a winner.

5. Being the first one to the gate when the gate number is called

While it’s inevitable that everyone will get on the plane regardless of whether you’re first in line or last, if you’re an airport lover, you have to be as close to the front as possible. Otherwise, how else will people know that you’re the most excited for your holiday?!

6. The fact that it’s acceptable to drink, even if it is 8 AM…

Hey, you’re on holiday right?! Crack open the prosecco and let’s start celebrating! Besides, it’s 5 o’clock somewhere… Not only that, but how often is it considered socially appropriate to start drinking that early in the morning? If you did that back at home, you’d be sure to receive some questionable stares…

7. The overall excitement that YOU’RE GOING ON HOLIDAY

You’re about to embark on a getaway that’s sure to be filled with sun, sea, sand and adventure (or you know, mountains and snow if you’re into that kind of holiday…). As soon as you walk through the airport doors and sail through security, you know you’re about to have the best week or two ever. It’s such a liberating feeling knowing you’re about to jet off somewhere new and exotic, and by the time you return, you’ll have countless stories to tell and memories to recount. Travelling really does do wonderful things to the soul and starting your adventure at the airport only heightens that electric experience!

  7. Haha this most made me chuckle literally everything… the airport on the way there is the best part of the holiday for me. (I don’t like heat lol) having a nose in duty free is first on my list followed by a full English, watching the planes and chatting to my other half whilst people watching. We give random strangers whole lives haha. Xxxxxxx

  19. I LOVE airports, my boyfriend absolutely hates flying and hates the airports just as much. They’re just like a giant playground, something I even get a tiny bit excited if my flights delayed if I’m in an airport with good shopping (and food!) It’s made me doubley excited to fly again next month haha! xxxxx

  20. I love and hate airports in equal measures. I love the routine and sense of adventure, I could almost get philosophical about it. But at the same time I hate the aniexty of what if I don’t hear that my plane is boarding and I miss my flight? I have to be at the gate as soon as it’s called lol!
