For a long time, I was under the impression that you had to stay right in the heart of Midtown Manhattan to experience the city’s best and most iconic sights, attractions, and locations. However, after being obsessed with New York City for over 20 years now, and learning so much about the city along the way, I realised that you don’t necessarily have to stay in Manhattan to experience Manhattan.

Enter: The Box House Hotel; a stylish and sophisticated boutique hotel located in Greenpoint Brooklyn, just 20 minutes via subway to Times Square, 30 minutes to Central Park and 40 minutes to the One World Trade Center.

I spent three nights at this wonderful Brooklyn hotel in October 2024 and in my review of The Box House Hotel below, I’m going to be sharing everything you need to know about staying at this awesome boutique hotel in Greenpoint, Brooklyn!

The Box House Hotel Brooklyn NY

Box House taxi

Located in Greenpoint, in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, The Box House Hotel is a fantastic hotel choice in NYC if you want to stay outside of the main hustle and bustle of the city.

It’s an awesome hotel for both first-time visitors and returning travellers to NYC as, despite looking pretty far away from the main tourist spots on a map, The Box House Hotel is actually located near multiple means of public transport, meaning that you can get into Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn/DUMBO super easily (more on that below).

Our stay at The Box House Hotel coincided with our sixth time in NYC and on this trip, I was super excited to explore slightly more off-the-beaten path destinations that not many first-time visitors experience when travelling to New York, including Greenpoint itself and the nearby neighbourhood of Williamsburg, and The Box House Hotel was the perfect base for us to do exactly that!

Guest rooms, suites & apartments at The Box House Brooklyn

In addition to the surprisingly convenient location, The Box House Hotel itself is truly a fantastic choice of accommodation in New York City. With 13 different room and suite types, there’s an accommodation style to suit all guests, including solo travellers, couples, families, and even larger groups.

There are 126 rooms and suites in total at The Box Hotel Brooklyn NY, including Queen rooms, (with and without a balcony), King rooms with a balcony city view, one bedroom suites, loft apartments, duplex apartments, two bedroom apartments, and even a huge penthouse suite that can accommodate up to four people (I definitely have my eye on the penthouse for our next visit to New York!).

Duplex Loft with Patio – The Box House Hotel Brooklyn review

The Box House Hotel Greenpoint Brooklyn

We were very kindly offered the Duplex Loft with Patio for our stay at The Box House Hotel which was equipped with a ridiculously comfortable Queen bed on its own mezzanine, as well as a full-size pullout sofa bed in the living area.

Furthermore, our incredible apartment also featured towering ceilings (16 -feet high!), a super spacious living area complete with the pull-out sofa, a substantial desk, flat-screen TV with a great selection of premium cable channels (there’s also a TV in the bedroom area!), and an adjoining outside patio area.

One thing that surprised me the most about The Box House Hotel was just how enormous it was, but it never felt too crowded or noisy (even though we saw plenty of guests coming and going) and the staff were always available and very attentive, especially during check-in/out.

I was also super impressed with the size of the Duplex Loft itself and I particularly loved that the bedroom was on its own separate “floor”. The only slight qualm I had about this apartment is that the bathroom is located on the ground floor next to the living room, which proved to be quite the adventure in the middle of the night, but it really wasn’t too much of an inconvenience at all!

The kitchen was yet another thing about this impressive hotel that surprised me; it was so well equipped! There is a dishwasher, complimentary tea and coffee (complete with a kettle and separate coffee machine), a stovetop, spacious refrigerator, microwave and ample cutlery, crockery and pots and pans.

While we didn’t use any of the cooking facilities on this trip as we wanted to try as many new places to eat in the city as possible, these facilities are an excellent way to keep costs down when visiting NYC as the fully functioning kitchen would allow you to make food at the apartment to cut down on costs of eating out.

I’ve already mentioned this above, but I think it’s worth noting again; the bed in our Duplex Loft at The Box House Hotel was unbelievably comfortable, and if we weren’t so excited to head out and explore the city, I could have quite easily spend a whole day just relaxing in the bed!

The bathroom, located on the ground floor of the Duplex Loft, is also very sizeable, with a fantastically hot and powerful shower over a small tub (this is usually the standard size if you’re lucky enough to get a bath in a New York hotel room!).

There are also complimentary toiletries, including shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, as well as a hair dryer and plenty of towels for the duration of your stay (you can get daily room service, but we just put the “do not disturb” sign on as we didn’t feel the need to get everything refreshed during our 3 days).

Dining at The Box House Hotel NYC – Brooklyn Lantern

Brooklyn Lantern

In addition to the brilliant rooms available, The Box House Hotel also boasts an impressive bar and restaurant known as the Brooklyn Lantern which serves a breakfast buffet to guests in the morning and transforms into a chic restaurant and cocktail bar at night.

It’s a super stylish and cosy area that makes for a wonderful place to indulge in a late-night cocktail or bottle of beer after a busy day exploring the city.

Another thing I wanted to mention was the grandeur of the lobby at the hotel; as soon as you enter The Box House Hotel, you immediately get a sense of warmth, comfort and cosiness, but it also feels like a high-end hotel.

There are ample seating areas in the lobby, as well as two computer desks if you feel so inclined to catch up on your professional work while you’re there!

The hotel also has its own rooftop, aptly named Top of the Box, but it is currently closed to the public.

How to get from The Box House Hotel in Brooklyn to Manhattan

During our stay, we used both the subway and the NYC ferry to get to/from the hotel into Manhattan and DUMBO, and we didn’t have any issues whatsoever when it came to getting around.

The closest subway station to The Box House Hotel is Vernon Blvd-Jackson Av, which is technically in Long Island City in Queens, but it’s just a 10-minute walk from the hotel over the Pulaski Bridge to get to the subway station. This area is a bit industrial, but we never felt unsafe at all, even when carrying all of our bags.

Another way to get around the city from the hotel is to use the NYC Ferry. We actually jumped on the ferry at various stops during our stay at The Box House Hotel; we used the Greenpoint Ferry Terminal (20-minute walk from the hotel) and the South Williamsburg Ferry Terminal (55-minute walk from the hotel) one morning when we decided to spend a couple of hours exploring the Williamsburg neighbourhood.

We then took the ferry to Pier 11-Wall Street; the ferry costs just $4.50 per journey and you can easily purchase tickets and check the ferry schedules on the NYC Ferry website and app.

Overall, the location of The Box House Hotel is super accessible and very easy to get to/from Manhattan. If you don’t feel super confident navigating the New York subway system just yet, then perhaps a hotel in Manhattan would be better suited to you, but even then, you will likely still need to use the public transport system at some point, especially if you’re staying in Midtown/Uptown and want to travel to Downtown Manhattan, for example!

You will also need to provide a valid form of ID such as your driving licence if you’re a domestic guest or your passport if you’re an international guest.

Unfortunately, there is no parking available at the hotel, but there are street parking spots available in the surrounding neighbourhood. The hotel advises that street parking is done at the discretion of the guest and will not accept any liability.

Is The Box House Hotel a good option for families?

I personally think that The Box House Hotel is one of the best accommodation options in New York City for families!

Despite being located away from the main tourist sights (although still super easy to get to/from), the hotel has so many incredible room options catered to families. The apartments are also brilliant for families wanting to cut back on food and drink costs in New York City as the kitchens are fully stocked with cooking equipment!

Is The Box House Hotel part of a hotel chain?

Formerly a doors and windows factory, The Box House Hotel isn’t technically part of a chain, but it is owned by a spectacular team of hoteliers that also run the hotel’s sister properties; the Henry Norman Hotel, Franklin Guesthouse, and Habitat 101.
