The Best Greek Islands You Need To Add To Your Bucket List In 2021

Last week, I was very kindly invited to a virtual cocktail-making evening with Jet2.com and Jet2 Holidays and Mixology Events. The evening was Greek themed and after perhaps one too many cocktails, I was inspired to write this post all about the best Greek islands in the form of a bucket list-style post.

At the time of writing this post, I’ve only been to Corfu and while my time there was short-lived (literally only 48 hours), it was one of the best weekends of my life and it firmly cemented my obsession with wanting to travel and explore as much of Greece as I possibly can.

This bucket list about the best Greek destinations for couples is as much for you guys as it is for me and if I’m lucky enough to visit even just one more of these incredible islands in Greece in my lifetime, I will be one very happy lady.

1. Santorini – best Greek destinations for couples

Santorini - best Greek islands

Santorini is a Greek island that’s been on my bucket list forever and it’s a place that I absolutely cannot wait to visit one day.

It’s probably one of the most popular and beloved Greek islands, famed for its whitewashed buildings with blue-topped roofs and tiles, dotting the rugged coastline. The sunsets in Santorini also look utterly idyllic and I honestly can’t wait to spend some time there hopefully very soon.

2. Mykonos

Mykonos

Similarly to Santorini, Mykonos is a place in Greece that I’ve had on my travel wishlist for what feels like forever and I’m so excited to head there one day (hopefully very soon!) and explore everything that it has to offer.

From ridiculously beautiful beaches and terrific sunsets to some of the most romantic restaurants imaginable, Mykonos is a place in Greece that should be on everyone’s bucket list! The flight to Mykonos from almost any airport in the UK is also less than four hours, which is a walk in the park for me, especially after enduring a 30+ hour flight to New Zealand multiple times!

3. Rhodes

Rhodes

Rhodes is a well-known Greek island famed for its ancient ruins and medieval landmarks and has many castles, acropolis sites and plenty of museums to wander around.

While I’ve heard that the beaches in Rhodes are also stunning, it’s a place that you’ll want to visit if you’re a history buff and enjoy getting stuck into exploring rather than relaxing.

4. Crete

Crete

Crete is the largest Greek island and is known for its awesome food and beautiful scenery. The water in Crete also looks totally magical and I know that Yaya and Lloyd from Hand Luggage Only really rate it as one of the best Greek islands.

The city of Chania on the island of Crete is up there with one of the places that I most want to visit on the island, along with Mirabello Bay which looks so picturesque.

5. Corfu – best Greek islands for couples

Corfu - best Greek islands

Corfu is not only the only Greek island that I’ve been to, but it’s also the only place I’ve been to in the whole of Greece (well, apart from a two-hour layover at the airport in Athens, but I’m not sure that counts!). We went there for less than 48 hours in 2018, so I have it on good authority that it’s the perfect place for a last-minute holiday in the sun.

We booked our trip to Corfu only a week before we actually flew and even though we were only there for 48 hours (literally just Friday night to Sunday night), it was one of the best weekends of my life! We ate delicious Greek food, drank far too many cocktails on a boat party and absolutely fell in love with Greece and ever since we arrived back from Corfu, I’ve been dying to go back and explore more of the island.

6. Kos

best Greek destinations for couples

Many of the Greek islands are renowned for their eclectic party scene and Kos is just one of the best places to party in Greece (so I’ve heard!).

It’s also a great place for watersports, in particular windsurfing, and while I’ve never tried it before, I’m always up for trying something new when I’m travelling (and even when I’m not!), so I think it’d be a great place to dip my toes in the water and try windsurfing for the first time!

7. Zakynthos

best Greek destinations for couples

Also known by its Italian name, Zante, the island of Zakynthos is another popular pilgrimage for party-goers. However, it’s also home to crystal-clear, spectacularly blue waters and beautiful coastal landscapes, so I reckon you’d be able to enjoy the best of both worlds in Zakynthos.

Zakynthos is also home to arguably one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece; Navagio Beach and its infamous shipwreck that resides right on the beach itself. A quick Google image search and you can see that the water and beach at Navagio Beach are almost unfathomably stunning.

8. Kefalonia (Cephalonia)

best Greek destinations for couples

Melissani Cave is arguably one of the most famous places in Kefalonia and it’s a place that I’ve seen on Instagram time and again that’s made me ridiculously excited to visit the island one day. I’ve also seen drone footage of it from above and it truly doesn’t even look real!

Myrtos Beach and Fteri Beach are also places that have a firm spot on my Greek island bucket list and these beautiful beaches in Kefalonia are so unbelievably gorgeous that it’s hard to comprehend. I’m not actually one for spending a tonne of time on the beach while I’m travelling, but the beaches in Greece make it impossible to resist at least a little wander on the sand and a dip in the glorious sea.

Thanks to my cocktail evening with Jet2, my obsession with visiting Greece has only intensified even more and now I really don’t know where to visit first! I think I might have to go on an extended Greek island-hopping excursion so that I can see them all 😜.
