You know when you hear constant hype about something and you’re doubtful whether it’ll actually live up to your expectations when you eventually try it out for yourself?
That’s how I felt after hearing so many rave reviews about Dishoom for many years. I’d heard countless bloggers talk about how incredible the food was and how amazing the staff were, but I was wondering whether everyone had just jumped on the ‘Dishoom hype’.
That is until we headed to the Dishoom Shoreditch London branch while we were in the capital, and all my expectations were not only met but were exceeded exponentially.
Dishoom is an Indian restaurant chain with branches in London, Manchester , Birmingham and Edinburgh and while I’ve only had the chance to try the Dishoom Shoreditch restaurant so far, I feel fairly confident in saying that it’s probably the best Indian restaurant I’ve been to in the UK, and it’s definitely the best Indian food I’ve had since we were in Vietnam!
So, without further ado, let’s take a look at my review of Dishoom Shoreditch, including what you can expect from the food, the staff and the general atmosphere of the restaurant!

Our table was booked for 6 pm on a Monday night, but it wasn’t just any random Monday night, it was the first day/night after the restrictions of the third UK lockdown had started lifting and we were finally allowed to eat indoors again for the first time in months. We knew that it would be busy, which is why we took the initiative to book a table in advance and I’m so glad we did because when we arrived at Dishoom Shoreditch, there was already a huge queue out the door!
Dishoom Shoreditch menu
As we already had a reservation, we were swiftly seated in a cosy corner of the restaurant and our waiter presented us with the food and drink menu and talked us through his recommendations, as well as the dishes that we should avoid due to Matt’s nut allergy.
This kind of service is always so lovely to receive and even though Matt’s pretty good at knowing what to eat with regard to his allergies, it’s always nice to be given a bit of an extra helping hand when it comes to important things like this.

After pondering over the menu for ages and deliberating what we wanted to eat (pretty much everything tbh; the menu at Dishoom Shoreditch is so damn good!), we settled on a few different dishes to share between us, which is also what our waiter recommended we do in order to try as many things as possible.
We went for the okra fries to start which were served with three assorted dips (I can’t quite remember what each one was, but I know they paired deliciously with the fries!). We then ordered the gunpowder potatoes, spicy lamb chops, chicken ruby and garlic naan to share.
The chicken ruby was undoubtedly my favourite dish. It had just enough spicy kick to my liking, and the sauce was rich and creamy. When paired with the scrumptious gunpowder potatoes, this dish was quite literally heavenly.
The spicy lamb chops were succulent, tender and incredibly flavoursome, no doubt thanks to the fact that they’re marinated overnight in rich spices, garlic and ginger. This dish was Matt’s favourite and he also used some of the excess sauce of the chicken ruby to dip the lamb into, which made for an unreal combination of flavours.
The garlic naan was pretty standard, but I was glad that it had ample garlic on it; sometimes you can order a garlic naan and it can taste pretty bland – this certainly wasn’t the case here.
As well as the food being utterly divine, I also had a truly wonderful dining experience. The restaurant itself at Dishoom Shoreditch London is so beautifully decorated, the toilets were gorgeous (not something I very often say about toilets!) and the staff’s attention to detail was second to none.
It’s no wonder that Dishoom has been voted the 4th best place to work in the UK; after only a couple of hours dining there, it was clear to see that each and every staff member loved their job and it really shone through in the service they offered their dining guests.
It’s been less than a week since we ate at Dishoom Shoreditch and I’m already longing for another visit. As much as I adored our dining experience at the Shoreditch London branch, I’d be very keen to visit another one of Dishoom’s restaurants as each place has a slightly different menu and I think it would be great to try out the different dishes served at each restaurant!
If you’re looking for some of the best Indian food in London, accompanied by a truly lovely dining experience, be sure to add Dishoom Shoreditch to your list of places to eat in London!
