Stonegate Yard York - The Best Places To Eat In York

Stonegate Yard has been one of my favourite places to eat and drink in York since I was a teenager. It’s a place that I frequented with my friends on a weekend or after school when we started being a bit more ~sophisticated~ and opted for a nicer place to eat, rather than our usual go-to of McDonald’s and it’s a place that I’ve eaten at many times since.

The cosy pub is nestled away in a beautiful, tranquil courtyard just off Little Stonegate and it’s the perfect place to eat in York for romantic date nights, cosy catch-ups with friends or for bigger bashes like a celebratory dinner or birthdays thanks to their expansive seating areas.

With both indoor and al fresco dining areas, Stonegate Yard York is the perfect place for a summer evening tipple, as well as intimate winter evenings inside accompanied by a hearty, warming pub meal.

Stonegate Yard York is situated in one of the best places in town for diners; it’s within walking distance of the York Minster (just a 4-minute walk away) and as it’s right in the centre of York, you’re in incredibly close proximity to some of the city’s best cocktail bars and other pubs if you want to make your night last a long while.

The beautiful setting of a Georgian house makes Stonegate Yard York ridiculously charming and endearing, as soon as you wander down the little courtyard, you can’t help but be captivated by its quaint and alluring atmosphere.

Outside, you’ll find plenty of tables and benches that are idyllic for those long summer evenings, and even in the autumn and winter, they make the perfect place to enjoy a heartwarming tipple and a substantial meal while you enjoy some respite from the cold under the outdoor heaters.

The menu at Stonegate Yard York is vast and extensive and I truly believe that there’s something for everyone. From a choice of classic pub favourites such as pies, gammon and eggs, burgers and more, as well as a great starter and dessert selection, there’s a dish to suit everyone’s dietary requirements and preferences.

When I used to visit Stonegate Yard with my friends, we’d nearly always order the sharing nachos to start and I remember them always being so yummy and such a great portion size as well. The baked camembert was also a firm favourite amongst my friends.

On my most recent visit to Stonegate Yard, I went for the steak flatbread with fried onions served with chips. Upon first glance, I didn’t think it looked like the biggest portion, but after tucking into it, I can certainly vouch for its enormity in terms of portion size as it more than did the job of sating my appetite.

The chips were actually more like french fries which was more than OK with me as I usually always prefer french fries anyway. As for the steak, it was just a little too overcooked for me as I prefer my steak rare to medium-rare if I have the choice, but I completely forgot to ask for it to be cooked this way and I’m assuming well-done is just the go-to at Stonegate Yard as I wasn’t given the option to choose when ordering. I’d still definitely order the steak flatbread again as it was still entirely yummy, but next time I’d probably ask for it to be cooked to my preference.

My dad and sister both went for the steak and ale pie and judging by their incredibly clean plates at the end of the meal, I think it’s safe to say they enjoyed it!

The pie itself was absolutely huge and you could tell that it was homemade; sometimes it feels like pub pies are just frozen ones, but this was positively delicious and the thick pastry had just the right balance between crisp and flaky.

There was also plenty of steak chunks inside the pie; another thing that’s sometimes not great with pub pies, but this one really was delicious. The only slight qualm they had was that they’d have preferred “proper” steak-cut chips as opposed to french fries, but as the french fries were still yummy, it didn’t make too much of a difference.

My gran went for the gammon and pineapple which was served with french fries and garden peas and yet again, this was another huge portion, especially for my little gran!

She said that the gammon was so tasty though and while I didn’t try it myself this time (bloody Covid!), I have had the gammon before at Stonegate Yard and I remember it always being really lovely.

I did briefly consider ordering a dessert and I had my eyes on the chocolate orange cheesecake which is literally my absolute dream dessert, but my sister already had her sights on getting ice cream in town, so we skipped dessert this time. However, as long as they keep the chocolate orange cheesecake on the menu, I know I’ll be back very soon!
