When I was younger, I had an unhealthy obsession with Louboutin shoes. I could easily waste hours trawling through the website, and whenever I was in New York or London or Manchester at the big designer outlet malls, I’d always head straight for the Louboutin section.
My obsession was so intense that when I got my first ever pair, I would spend ages just staring at them or walking around the house in them, pretending I was on the set of Devil Wears Prada.
Fast forward a fair few years and my priorities and obsessions have changed somewhat. I still have a secret adoration for pretty shoes, but nowadays I’d much rather spend my money on travel instead. So, when it came to packing for our trip around the world, I knew that I needed to invest in a comfortable, sturdy pair of hiking boots to see me through my adventures.
Yes, that is the least cool thing I’ve ever said.
However, my choice of footwear for our travels couldn’t have resulted in a better product; the Vango Velan boots I chose to take travelling with me are now one of the best pieces of clothing/accessory I’ve ever bought and I really cannot recommend them enough to you guys.
Sure, they might not be quite as pretty as a brand-new shiny pair of Louboutins, but they are still awesome in their own right…
Here’s my Vango Velan walking boots review – AKA the best hiking boots for women!
Features of the Vango Velan women’s walking boots

- Protex® membrane – keeps your feet dry and comfortable
- Vango FlexBeam Chassis – designed so that everyone receives the support they require
- Vango FootSpy Insole – specially designed insole used to assess where your foot is in relation to the boot
- RockRubber – very durable rubber that provides toe protection, matte finish and comfortable feel
- Traction System – advanced traction system designed for grip and durability, the tread pattern helps with self-cleaning of the boot and a more-secure walk
Before purchasing my Vango Velan women’s hiking boots, I’d done very little (read: no) research on the kind of boot that I needed or wanted.
Of course, I knew that I required something suitable for various kinds of climates and terrains, something that was relatively waterproof, as well as comfortable and well-fitting too.
So when I headed to Go Outdoors to try a few pairs on, all I knew was that the boots I chose had to fit my relatively vague criteria. I must have only tried one or two other pairs on when I found the Vango Velan boots and sure enough, like love at first sight, they were the ones.
I’ve never been much of a hiking boot person at all and my only prior experience of owning a pair was when I was 13 in New Zealand and since then I’ve tried to avoid all hideous means of footwear (hence my unhealthy obsession with designer shoes). So it came as quite a shock to me to discover just how much I loved these hiking boots.
I spent a decent amount of time prancing up and down the shop in them to make sure they fit correctly and were properly comfortable, but I’m delighted to say that they were a definitive winner.

While travelling all across New Zealand, Australia and Southeast Asia, I wore my Vango Velan boots religiously, only swapping them out occasionally for a pair of flip flops to head to the beach with.
Granted, they’re not exactly the most attractive pair of shoes in the world, but for a pair of hiking boots, I don’t think they’re too offensive to look at. My favourite part of the aesthetics of these boots is definitely the vivid blue threading that runs across the lower part of the boot, along the laces and the tongue of the boot.
While I’m really not a huge fan of the brown colour, I don’t think they’re quite as hideous as many other hiking boots for women and even though I’m certainly not going to win the prize for “best dressed” when wearing these, I really don’t think they’re too offensive.
The most important aspect of these walking boots is just how comfortable they are. I’ve honestly never worn anything so well-fitting; it’s almost as if they were designed with my feet in mind!
Pros
- So comfortable (literally the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever had)
- Waterproof
- Very sturdy and relatively non-slip
- Easy to lace up
Cons – Vango Velan walking boots review
- Make my feet very sweaty
Price
The Vango Velan hiking boots for women cost £70 on the Vango website, but you can get them for just £59 on Amazon!
Overall, I really can’t recommend the Vango Velan Women’s hiking boots enough. I’ve even been wearing them since returning back to the UK, much to my mum’s dismay (I think travelling definitely eradicated pretty much every last bit of fashion sense I had!).
I’ve got my money’s worth out of these boots 100 times over and I’m honestly blown away by how well they’ve stood the test of time; it’s not looking like I’ll need to buy anymore any time soon!

How long have you had them? I’m looking at a pair of vango hiking shoes but I want them to be relatively durable and I dunno how long they’ll last
I’ve had them for over two years and I wore them almost every single day for an entire year and then I’ve spent most days in the last year wearing them too and they’ve held up SO well! I’d highly recommend them!
