best things about travelling full time

I recently wrote a post about the things no one tells you about long term travel – some of which are good, and some of which are, well, not so good. Long term travel can be a tricky thing to navigate but the highs vastly outweigh the lows and today I wanted to share my thoughts on the best things about travelling full time.

Travelling full time has been the greatest thing I’ve ever done and I’m so lucky, grateful and thankful for every single travel opportunity that comes my way.

In order to celebrate our nomadic lifestyle and all the things I love about it, here’s the best things about travelling full time.

Meeting new people – best things about travelling full time

backpacking the world full time

Undoubtedly one of my absolute favourite things about travelling is all the incredible people we’ve met along the way.

We’ve met so many like-minded people while travelling who’ve shared the same views on the world and opinions about certain destinations that we would never know about otherwise.

Of course, we still have all of our friends back at home in the UK that I wouldn’t change for the world, but there’s something so special and lovely about meeting people in the same position as you who can share equally funny, scary and epic travel anecdotes.

Trying weird and wonderful cuisines

Before I met Matt, my diet consisted of the most basic food groups you can imagine. I had no varied diet, I had very little interest in food or trying new cuisines and eating to me was basically just a necessity in order to stay alive.

Fast-forward almost four years and a wealth of countries and cuisines later and you literally couldn’t pry me away from trying something new and delicious.

With travelling, we’ve been lucky enough to sample some of the greatest delicacies in the world. From hearty burgers, to scrumptious curries, to wild and exotic fruit and vegetables, to traditional Vietnamese, Malaysian and Thai dishes, to everything in between, it’s safe to say that my palate is now thoroughly expanded.

I absolutely adore trying out new foods and even though I haven’t enjoyed every single thing we’ve eaten, I feel very grateful that I’ve just been given the chance to do so.

The freedom to create our own itinerary and schedule

One of my ~fears~ for a while now has been having to conform to societal norms and being “forced” to live in the “traditional” sense, e.g. a full time job in an office with a half an hour lunch break and 28 days of paid annual leave, etc.

*shivers*

While this is more than enough for most people (and I don’t blame you – it’s bloody lovely to have some stability!), it’s just not for us so I love the fact that we have the freedom and ability to create our own itinerary and schedule on a daily basis.

Don’t get me wrong, it can get pretty tedious and difficult not having a set routine in place but I wouldn’t change it for the world and I simply adore that we have the luxury to design our days and weeks exactly how we want.

Seeing how other people live

Travelling to vast and wide countries all over the world provides you with the opportunity to see how other people live.

Sometimes it can be pretty tricky to see other people’s lives, especially those less fortunate, but it teaches such an invaluable lesson of gratitude for the things you have.

I love seeing how other people live, how they go about their daily lives and how they do things differently to myself. It’s such a fascinating world and people are equally as intriguing; travelling really is a blessing to be able to get an insight into people’s everyday lives all over the world.

Being able to work for ourselves

This isn’t necessarily something that applies to everyone who travels but it is something that we’re able to do.

Being able to work for ourselves online while travelling full time is something that I’ll never, ever take for granted and it’s something that I feel insanely lucky and grateful for every day.

Full time travel gives us the flexibility and opportunities to work for ourselves, from anywhere in the world and it’s without a doubt one of my favourite things about what we do.

Living like a local – best things about travelling

Similarly to seeing how other people live, travelling has also allowed us to live like a local in many cases.

From staying at a family’s house on top of a mountain in Bali, to living in local home-stays in the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, we’ve had many opportunities to live like a local and experience the traditional way of life in certain cities and countries.

To me, travelling is all about opening up your mind, gaining new experiences and generally just absorbing all the greatness that the world has to offer and when you can experience places from a local’s perspective, it makes it even more enjoyable.

Becoming much more confident

That incredible feeling of adventure

Even after 10+ months of travelling, I still get excited like a little kid on Christmas Eve when it comes to booking something exciting.

Of course, sometimes the novelty of moving to a new place every 3/4 days can get pretty tiring, but most of the time I still thoroughly love that utter sense of adventure.

It’s incredible to not know where’s next, or where you’ll be sleeping tomorrow night; sometimes we’ve not even known which continent we’ll be in, in a few days’ time, never mind which city or country!

It’s taught me so much about the world – best things about travelling

Long term travel has taught me so much about the world and it’s actually one of my very favourite things about travelling in general.

The ability to see into different communities, learn from local people, sample traditional cuisines and embrace native religions and practices is such a rare and amazing thing and something that I cherish every single day.

All the awesome stories we have to tell

While I’m not saying I’m desperate to go home right now, I am very excited to go back and share all of our incredible travel stories with everyone back home.

Of course, I share daily anecdotes and stories on my Instagram, and my blog is constantly updated with our latest travel adventures, but there’s just something about sharing stories with people in real life that I absolutely love.

I truly am so thankful and grateful to be able to travel full time and I hope I can inspire you guys to do the same!
