restaurant and dining

I’ve been lucky enough to stay in hundreds of hotels, hostels, homestays, Airbnbs, apartments and more during my travels around the world over the last few years, but there are still always a few hotels that stand out among the best.

The Scotsman Hotel in Edinburgh is one of the best hotels I’ve stayed in thanks to its opulent decor, its wonderful staff and its delicious food.

If you’re looking for inspiration for where to stay in Edinburgh, check out my review of The Scotsman Hotel for one of the best and most luxurious hotels in the city!

marble staircase

The grand exterior of The Scotsman Hotel is nothing short of spectacular, but somehow it pales into insignificance when you compare it to its lavish interior. The decor of the hotel is ornate and sophisticated and everywhere you look it just oozes charm.

The hotel is set upon 10 floors with a glorious marble staircase connecting the third and fourth floors; it reminded me of something out of a Gossip Girl scene where they all descend to the Debutante Ball…

Once I got over the initial shock and overwhelming introduction to the hotel, we made our way up to our Penthouse suite!

comfy hotel bed

Set upon two floors with its own private entrance from the elevator, the Penthouse Suite of The Scotsman hotel was nothing short of extraordinary.

It was the most beautiful hotel room I’d ever seen and considering it was approximately FOUR times the size of mine and Matt’s apartment, you can see why I was slightly overwhelmed by everything!

The suite is divided into elegant rooms with a substantial living area accompanied by a lush balcony, desk area, three-piece sofa, dining table, a large flat-screen TV, a table with a built-in Monopoly board and a telescope that actually worked!

I can’t even begin to explain just how beautiful this area of the suite was; it made for the perfect environment to relax and unwind after a very busy day exploring Edinburgh.

The light that flooded in from the floor-to-ceiling windows was remarkable and it made the whole place look even more magical and I desperately wished that my own apartment looked like that…

Through the hallway and just passed a private toilet that was located near just one of the entrances to the Penthouse (!!!) was the astonishing bedroom. The enormous bed was so large that I could spread out any which way and still not reach the edge!

A super soft mattress resided on the bed along with a ridiculously comfortable duvet and several giant pillows. The blue finishing touches of the throw and large cushion really tied the room together and somehow managed to make it look even more elegant.

At the foot of the bed, was a giant flat-screen TV and the room also came equipped with unparalleled views of the city as well as a desk, hair dryer, ghd straighteners and a walk-in wardrobe to rival that of Carrie Bradshaw! It was magnificent, to say the least.

The enchanting spiral staircase in the living area led up to a gorgeous office-like area that came equipped with a bookcase, desk and a relaxing office chair.

The bathroom was equipped with a stunning roll-stop bath that afforded gorgeous views of the city.

I also couldn’t believe that the toiletries of choice complimentary of The Scotsman were from The White Company! When I sunk into a delicious bath and used these heavenly products I honestly thought I was dreaming – this kind of lifestyle was just too good to be true!

As if everything included in the suite wasn’t already enough, the incredible staff at The Scotsman also provided us with a complimentary bottle of Prosecco which would have been rude not to drink in the bath while admiring the stunning views of the sunset over the city!

The food

As the hotel was so grand and wonderful, we didn’t really want to stray too far away for food so we opted to enjoy every single meal during our stay in Edinburgh at the hotel. I arrived in Edinburgh just before lunchtime on Saturday so I met my dad and sister at the train station and then we headed straight to The Scotsman to tuck into a delicious lunch.

I opted for the chicken caesar salad which wasn’t quite as good as the one I’d had at Betty’s but it was still delicious nonetheless. I decided to go for the smaller portion as I wasn’t quite hungry enough for the larger version and I was delighted to discover that it was just the right size to satisfy my appetite.

After an incredibly hectic day of exploring Edinburgh, my sister and I headed back to our lavish suite to enjoy a film on Netflix and we ordered some yummy things from room service. I went for the sirloin steak sandwich which was served with skinny fries. The steak sandwich was absolutely delicious and I certainly wouldn’t hesitate to order this again.

While the breakfast at The Scotsman was still really lovely and yummy, I felt that there weren’t quite as many options available as I’d experienced at other hotels previously. The food I did enjoy, however, was extremely tasty and well prepared and cooked. All the staff were incredibly attentive and friendly and were happy to assist us in any way we required.

I can’t believe that I was lucky enough to experience such a luxurious stay at The Scotsman hotel and I will cherish the memories created here forever! Thank you so much to my mum and dad for providing us with the opportunity to stay here – I will never forget it!

  1. We stayed here for our honeymoon at the beginning of November 2018 and we were so gutted as the sauna didn’t work all week. They knocked us £100 off the price but it still never felt good enough. Such a shame as the room was amazing.
