To kick off my Wales road trip posts, I’m starting with an epic review of our stay at the King’s Head Inn in Gower, Swansea. It was my first time in the area (and only my second time in Wales ever!), so I couldn’t wait to explore everything it had to offer, all the while being hosted at this stunning 17th Century inn.
King’s Head Inn Gower is nestled in the tiny village of Llangennith in the Gower Peninsula and AONB. As well as the three large buildings that host their stunning rooms, the King’s Head Inn also has a separate pub that serves hearty pub grub and it’s a remarkably cosy place to hang out, whether you’re staying at the inn or not.
Below, I’ll share all the details about staying at the King’s Head Inn Gower, plus what to order if you’re eating in the pub!
How to get to King’s Head Inn

Located in the picturesque village of Llangennith, the King’s Head Inn can be reached by car only, so if you plan to stay here, it’s best to drive your own car or hire one as part of your Wales road trip.
While it looks absolutely miles away on the map, the inn is only 30-minutes from Swansea, almost right at the edge of the Gower Peninsula. The roads leading to the King’s Head are pretty windy and narrow, but we managed to navigate them easily in our campervan, so as long as you’re careful, you shouldn’t struggle too much!
Cosy rooms at the 17th Century Inn

As part of our press trip with Visit Swansea Bay, we were very kindly treated to a two-night stay at the King’s Head Inn and while it might have been a bit risky, I didn’t actually check anything out about the accommodation beforehand as I wanted it to be a surprise when we arrived!
Thankfully, our room at the King’s Head Inn was everything I could have hoped for and more! To say that the buildings date back to the 17th Century, I was completely blown away by how gorgeous they were and how many mod-cons the room had!
One thing in particular that I was incredibly excited about was the substantial bath in the bathroom; not only was it remarkably clean and very well looked after, but the bath itself was positively ginormous and as we don’t have a bath at home, I couldn’t wait to make the most out of it!
The huge double bed in the room was also ridiculously comfortable and it was complete with hotel-style bedding (think crisp, fresh white sheets and huge, plump pillows) which is always one of my very favourite things about staying in a hotel.
While it doesn’t look like it, the floors are also kitted out with underfloor heating and once you find the right temperature to set them at on the thermostat, I can’t tell you how amazing it felt to walk around barefoot, even in the middle of October!
Inside the room, we were also provided with a complimentary tea and coffee station, as well as fresh milk in the mini-fridge which was a really nice touch. There’s also so much storage space, including a giant wardrobe, several drawers and little cubby holes to pack away your belongings during your stay.

A wall-mounted TV was conveniently placed in perfect view of the bed, which was ideal for watching crap television on an evening when we returned from our day of exploring Swansea Bay and Gower.

Food and drink at the King’s Head Inn Gower

As well as our incredible room at the King’s Head Inn, we were also very kindly treated to dinner one evening and breakfast for the two mornings as part of our stay.
I love the fact that the King’s Head is both a quintessentially British pub, as well as an inn, so you really do get the best of both worlds, whether you’re staying there or not. Even if you’re not staying at the inn, I’d still highly recommend visiting the pub for some yummy food as it’s well worth the trip out to Llangennith.

Breakfast

Breakfast at the King’s Head was served in the pub itself and I’m not sure how much it’s changed due to Covid rules and restrictions, but everything was laid out on a little breakfast tray that we took to a table of our choosing in the dining area.
As well as the choice of hot breakfast dishes such as a full English, a traditional Welsh breakfast, avocado on toast, sandwiches and a vegan option, we were also provided with tea and/or coffee, cereal and a croissant each; what a hearty way to start the day!
On our first morning, I opted for the English breakfast and Matt went for the eggs benedict with bacon. My full English wasn’t quite as loaded up as some hotel breakfasts offer, but it was more than enough food for me, especially considering we had cereal and croissants to enjoy as well!
The eggs benedict was really yummy and such a great portion size; the eggs were runny and the bacon was crisp – exactly how we like it!

On our second morning we had the same pastries and cereal choices, but this time we opted for a bacon sandwich (Matt) and a sausage sandwich (me). The sandwiches weren’t quite as good as the previous breakfasts we had on our first day, but they still did a great job of fuelling us for our day ahead.
Dinner
On our first evening at the King’s Head Inn Gower, once we’d checked in and I’d had the chance to take full advantage of the huge bathtub, we headed to the pub which was literally a 30-second walk across the car park for dinner.
We were both really hungry by the time we headed there at 7 pm as we’d had a full day of exploring Swansea Bay and Gower and after 21,000 steps, we were more than ready to tuck into something substantial and delicious!
As we were so hungry, we both ordered a starter as well as a main; I went for the garlic wild mushrooms in a creamy sauce on crusty bread and Matt opted for the salt and pepper squid.
My mushroom starter was absolutely delightful; the sauce was thick and creamy and it paired beautifully with the mushrooms and crunchy bread and the salad on top was drizzled in balsamic vinegar which sounds odd with mushrooms, but it actually went together perfectly!
Matt’s salt and pepper squid were also yummy, but he said they weren’t the best he’s ever had and he’d have preferred the batter to be a little crispier. The squid itself though was positively delicious and cooked to perfection.
For our main dishes, Matt went for the chicken arrabbiata pasta which really surprised me as even though he loves eating pasta at home, I’d never actually seen him order pasta in a pub or at a restaurant before! The first thing we noticed when the meal was served was just how enormous the portion size of the pasta was; Matt’s a great eater but even he struggled to finish this mammoth portion off! Thankfully, it was truly scrumptious and paired with the crunchy garlic bread, this dish was a great choice!
I went for the sirloin steak with chips and peppercorn sauce which again, was a very generous portion. I asked for the steak medium rare and the chef certainly delivered on that front and when paired with the peppercorn sauce, it was really yummy! The chips were also sort of like chip-shop chips which I absolutely loved; they were just crispy enough without being overcooked.
Thank you so much to Visit Swansea Bay and King’s Head Inn Gower for hosting our stay in Swansea; we had a truly enjoyable time staying and eating at the inn and I wouldn’t hesitate to return for another stay in the future!
