Is it cheap to visit Hanoi?
Hanoi is one of the cheapest capital cities in Southeast Asia and you can easily visit Hanoi on a budget! Everything from food, drink, accommodation and activities are all very reasonably priced, especially if you stay in home stays/hostels, eat local food and take advantage of the many free things to do there!
The guide below covers every single penny we spent during a month in Hanoi!

Total cost for 1 month in Hanoi for 2 people
We spent a total of £1,864.22 for 2 people (£932.11 each – £27.42 each per day) for 34 days in Hanoi, Vietnam.
We definitely could have visited Hanoi on a much stricter budget as we ate out at different restaurants and worked from different cafes almost every single day! If we only ate local food and avoided the more costly restaurants and cafes, we could have easily got our spending down to around £20 each a day!
Flights to Hanoi (from Taipei)

We spent 1 month in Hanoi as part of our second long-term trip in Asia. Before heading to Vietnam for 3 months, we spent 6 weeks in Japan, 3 weeks in South Korea and 1 week in Taiwan.
Therefore, instead of paying for flights from the UK to Hanoi (which would cost around £300 each one way), we only had to pay for the short 3-hour flight from Taipei, Taiwan to Hanoi, Vietnam.
As it was such a short flight with a budget airline, we paid less than £70 each which included up to 20kg of baggage.
One-way flights for 2 people from Taipei to Hanoi: £134.80 (£67.40 each).
Accommodation cost in Hanoi for one month

Accommodation costs are usually the most expensive thing that you have to factor into your budget whenever you travel and while the majority of our Hanoi budget went into the cost of our accommodation for a month, it was still remarkably affordable, especially compared to the cost of our apartment in New York for one month!
We spent 34 nights in Hanoi in total, with the first two nights being spent at an airport hotel as we arrived super late from Taipei and we wanted somewhere to relax for two days before heading into Hanoi itself. We paid just £30 (£15 each) for two nights at Hanz Noi Bai Airport Hotel before moving on to our next accommodation in Hanoi.
We then spent a total of 32 nights in a beautiful one bedroom apartment at Wecozy Hanoi Railway Side. We originally booked for 28 nights at a cost of £588.42 (£294.21 each – £10.50 each per night), but we extended our stay for another four nights as we loved it so much at a rate of £103.26 (£51.63 each – £12.90 each per night).
Regardless of how long you’re planning to spend in Hanoi, I would highly recommend booking a stay at Wecozy as it’s in such an excellent location just on the outskirts of the Old Quarter and there are so many incredible bars, restaurants and cafes nearby. Our apartment also overlooked the infamous Hanoi Train Street, which was such a cool experience (although, a rather noisy one – that we eventually got used to!).
Accommodation costs for 34 nights for 2 people: £721.68 (£360.84 each – £10.61 each per night).

Food and drink costs in Hanoi (meals out)

Food is one of the most important aspects of travel for us, so it’s not an area where we stick to a super strict budget.
However, despite eating out at least once a day in Hanoi (sometimes even 2-3 times a day!), plus drinking alcohol at local restaurants with dinner and even a couple of nights out on Beer Street, we still managed to spend less than £10 each a day on food and drink at bars and restaurants!
We also had a few takeaway pizzas and burgers delivered via Grab when we couldn’t be bothered to cook or go out for a meal and this often cost us around £7-£10 each!
How much is a beer in Hanoi?
The cost of a local beer in Hanoi (bia hoi) can be as little as 5,000 VND (£0.17 / $0.21). Local bottled beer such as Saigon, 333 and Bia Hanoi costs around 20,000 VND (£0.68 / $0.82), whereas imported beer such as Tiger Beer or Heineken usually costs between 35,000 VND (£1.19 / $1.44) to 50,000 VND (£1.70 / $2.05).
How much does a meal cost in Hanoi?
If you eat at local places and get local Vietnamese dishes such as bahn mi, pho, bahn xeo or bun cha, you can expect to pay less than 150,000 VND (£5.10 / $6.15) for 3 meals per person per day!
A bahn mi sandwich costs as little as 20,000 VND (£0.68 / $0.82) and a bowl of pho can cost as little as 35,000 (£1.19 / $1.44) from super local places. Iced tea can also cost as little as 5,000 VND (£0.17 / $0.21) per glass and even a can/bottle of Coca-Cola usually costs around 20,000 (£0.68 / $0.82), so you can keep your food budget in Hanoi super low!
The cheapest meal we had in Hanoi cost us just 125,000 VND (£4.25 / $5.13) for a bowl of pho, chicken fried rice, an iced tea and a bottle of Hanoi Beer!
Food and drink costs at restaurants/bars/cafes in Hanoi for 2 people: £621.36 (£310.68 each – £9.13 each per day).

Cost of groceries in Hanoi for one month

Our apartment at Wecozy Hanoi had a kitchen with a fridge, kettle, microwave and a one-ring electric hob, so we were able to cook a few meals in the apartment which saved us eating out for every single meal.
However, we did notice some things to be pretty expensive in the local supermarket, especially random things like pasta sauce!
We mostly had breakfast at the apartment (cereal, fruit or eggs) and then often skipped lunch completely or headed to a nearby cafe to work for a few hours before going to a restaurant for dinner or ordering food from Grab to be delivered to the apartment.
We often felt like it was much easier and often even a lot cheaper to eat out at local restaurants rather than cook in the apartment as some meals would cost us £5-£10 to cook at home, compared to just a few pounds to eat at local restaurants!

Cost of activities in Hanoi

Hanoi is such a great city with so many incredible free things to see and do, that we didn’t actually spend much money on paid-for activities at all.
Our biggest activity cost in Hanoi was an overnight cruise in Ha Long Bay, and technically, that’s not even in Hanoi itself, it’s just because we did the tour from there!
As a disclaimer, we also had a Get Your Guide voucher for £100 off the Ha Long Bay tour, which made it even cheaper for us and kept our activity costs as low as possible. We should have paid £136.58 each for the cruise, but as we had the £100 discount, we managed to pay just half that.
We each also got a deep tissue massage while in Hanoi which cost us less than £14 each for an hour! Spa treatments in Vietnam are insanely cheap compared to the Western world, so if you’re looking to indulge in some relaxing treatments, Hanoi/Vietnam is the place to do it!
Here are some of the activities we paid for during our one month in Hanoi:
- Ha Long Bay overnight cruise: £68.29 each
- Deep tissue massage for one hour: £13.69 each
- Vietnam Military History Museum: £1.36 each
- Imperial Citadel of Thang Long: £1.02 each
We also enjoyed many free sights/activities while in Hanoi for a month, such as Train Street, the Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum.
Activity costs in Hanoi for one month for 2 people: £168.71 (£84.36 each).
Transport costs

Transport was the area where we spent the least amount of money in Hanoi as we didn’t pay for any public transport and we didn’t hire scooters as most things in Hanoi can be seen/done on foot.
We only paid for two Grab taxis during our entire month in Hanoi; one from the airport to the Old Quarter and one back to the airport on the day that we left. We paid around £10 (£5 each) for each of the journeys, including tips for the driver, which took around one hour each way, so it’s incredibly cheap to get taxis/Grab rides in Hanoi.
Transport costs for one month for 2 people: £22.85 (£11.43 each).
Miscellaneous costs (eSIM, medication & Vietnam visa)

I’ve managed to account for all of our costs in Hanoi in each of the sections above, but there are a few additional expenses that don’t really fit into any category, hence the need for this miscellaneous section.
The first thing that we paid for before arriving in Hanoi for a month was our 90-day Vietnam e-Visas which were introduced in Vietnam in August 2023. We paid £20.67 ($25 USD) each for our 90-day visas which took three full working days to be approved.
It’s not essential to have an e-Visa for Vietnam (depending on what country you’re from), as UK citizens (amongst others) can now enter Vietnam visa-free for 45 days, compared to the previous 15 days allowance.
However, we wanted the ability to stay in Vietnam for as long as possible, which is why we paid for the 90-day visa.
We also purchased a 30-day eSIM for our time in Hanoi which cost £7.68 for 3GB. We always use Airalo to buy eSIMs on our travels as we find them to be the most reliable and often most affordable.
I also had to stock up on some of my medication while in Hanoi which isn’t necessarily a cost you will incur on your trip, but I wanted to include it in my spending report anyway.
Miscellaneous costs for 2 people in one month: £62.58 (£31.29 each).
Conclusion – total cost for 1 month in Hanoi for 2 people
£1,864.22 for 2 people (£932.11 each – £27.42 each per day) for 34 days in Hanoi, Vietnam.
As you can see, it’s very easy to visit Hanoi on a budget, especially if you stick to local restaurants and avoid paying for expensive tours and attractions. I think a budget of around £25/$30 each per day should be more than enough to visit Hanoi.
