If you’ve read any of my previous Vietnam content, you’ll know that it was the last place we visited before we had to fly home back to the UK due to the dreaded Coronavirus.

Just a couple of days before we flew home, we headed to the Sun World amusement park at Ba Na Hills in Da Nang. Our visit was pretty well timed as just shortly after that, Vietnam (and pretty much the whole world) went into lockdown and everything was pretty much closed.

Our time at Sun World and the Golden Hands Bridge was the very last excursion we did on our 11 month trip around the world (for the time being, at least) and I’m incredibly grateful that we got to see such a beautiful part of Vietnam.

If you’re planning a trip there, or you just want to learn more about Ba Na Hills and the things to do there, then this extensive guide is for you!

Sun World Ba Na Hills

Sun World Ba Na Hills Da Nang

There are several ways you can visit Sun World Ba Na Hills, but arguably the most popular (and easiest) way to visit is to simply book on a tour, which is exactly what we did.

We booked the Ba Na Hills and Golden Bridge Day Tour and we opted for the small group with lunch buffet package which cost around £42 each. While it was one of the most expensive tours we did while travelling, it included everything from an unlimited buffet lunch, a tour guide, bottled water and of course, ticketed entrance to the actual amusement park.

Of course, if you did want to reduce the cost somewhat, you could make your own way there and then just pay for your entrance ticket separately.

Sun World Ba Na Hills resides 1,487m above sea level and the views from the top of the mountain are absolutely exquisite. It’s undoubtedly one of the coolest and weirdest places we visited while travelling and I’d highly recommend it to anyone visiting Vietnam.

Sun World Ba Na Hills

The “park” is spread out across several different themed areas, as well as on various levels up the mountain.

Here are some of the top things to see and do at Sun World Ba Na Hills!

Golden Bridge

Golden Bridge Vietnam

The Golden Bridge, often referred to as the Golden Hands Bridge was only opened in 2018 and yet it’s now known as one of the top tourist attractions in Vietnam.

Admittedly, I was a little apprehensive about visiting a place that received so much hype on Instagram and various blog posts I’d read, but I’m happy to report that it didn’t disappoint in the slightest.

Golden Bridge

I should say that when we visited Ba Na Hills, it was at the very start of the COVID-19 global pandemic so the entire place at Sun World was pretty much empty. Usually, the park sees anywhere between 20,000 to 30,000 people everyday, but when we went, there were 2,000 people there all day, at most.

Of course, it was devastating to see the negative impact that the Coronavirus was having on the Vietnamese economy already, but the slight (and very selfish) silver lining meant that we enjoyed everything without crowds and swarms of tourists.

The day we visited the Golden Bridge in Vietnam was also an incredibly clear, bright-blue sky day; something that we were told by other travellers not to expect as Ba Na Hills is notorious for being exceptionally cloudy and foggy.

We couldn’t believe our luck when we saw the Hands in all their impressive glory and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky.

Golden Bridge

The Bridge is accessed by cable car (more on that below) from the Sun World carpark and it connects the cable car station to the various gardens and other attractions throughout the park.

I’m sure that on peak tourist days, the Golden Hands Bridge will be overwhelmed with tourists, so try and get there as early as possible to see it without masses of people. Alternatively, when we were just about to leave Sun World at 4pm, the bridge was practically empty and our tour guide said that most people see it as soon as they arrive so you might be in luck if you avoid it at first, and then revisit on your way back down the mountain later in the day.

French Village

French Village Ba Na Hills Da Nang

Ba Na Hills was originally founded in 1919 by French Colonists who built the resort as a leisure destination for French tourists. Nowadays, it’s very much a Vietnamese-run place, but elements of the French influence are still incredibly prominent.

One of those influences is the beautiful French Village that you’ll find at the top of the cable car route.

Walking around the French Village, it was really hard to believe that we weren’t actually in a quaint European town. Everything looks so authentic and real and if you’ve never been to Europe, you’ll soon get a feel for it 1,400 feet above sea level at Ba Na Hills.

Everything from the cobbled streets, to the “castles” and “churches” make the French Village feel warm and welcoming and it really is one of the most fascinating and beautiful places I’ve seen.

Of course, there are still some authentic Asian elements and influences to it too, with multiple Buddha statues, shrines and Chinese pagodas also situated in and around the French Village.

Fun fact: I saw a woman at Sun World doing this pose; she was trying to point to something behind her but couldn’t quite get the hang of it and this was the result so I decided to recreate it!

As you can see from the pictures, the whole place was virtually empty when we visited but I was deeply assured by our tour guide that it’s never normally like that, so don’t expect it to be quiet and peaceful if you ever go!

I imagine that the French Village is still insanely picturesque and beautiful, no matter when you visit so make sure you take your camera along; I took so many pictures while we were there!

Cable Car – Golden Bridge

most epic travel moments of my life - golden hands bridge vietnam

We’d already experienced one of Vietnam’s most amazing cable car routes when we were in Da Lat, so we had pretty high expectations for the one leading up to Ba Na Hills and it’s safe to say that it didn’t disappoint.

This particular cable car route was ranked as one of the top ten in the world by CNN and it also holds the world record for the longest non-stop single track cable car at 5,801 metres in length! After riding it up and down the mountain myself, I can totally see why.

There are actually five routes that take the cable car network up and down, with approximately 6,500 passengers riding it every hour, but only two tracks were open when we visited due to you-know-what.

If you’re afraid of heights, then it’s going to be a pretty tough challenge riding the cable car to the top, but my goodness is it worth it for the impeccable views you’re greeted with!

Alpine Coaster

Alpine Coaster

I didn’t actually manage to take a picture of the Alpine Coaster at Sun World as I was terrified of dropping my phone or camera, but if you read my post about the best things to do in Da Lat, it’s very similar to that one!

There are two tracks you can ride on that send you soaring through the forest and partially down the mountain from the ride entry point near Fantasy Park. Don’t worry; you’ll get taken back up again on the mechanical “sled”!

Fantasy Park

I was too busy having fun inside the Fantasy Park part of Sun World Ba Na Hills to take any pictures, so you’ll have to make do with this hilarious picture of Matt on one of the games!

The Fantasy Park is a whopping 21,000 square metre indoor entertainment park next to the French Village and it’s absolutely teeming with various rides, attractions and arcade games.

There are three levels of the Fantasy Park, with games suitable for literally everyone. All of the games were free and included in the price of our ticket as part of our tour, but I think you might have to pay for some rides if you visit Sun World yourself.

Flower Festival

Flower Festival at Ba Na Hills and golden hands bridge

The Flower Festival at Sun World Ba Na Hills is a seasonal event that’s held between February and March every year.

As you can see, the festival was in full swing when we visited and the gardens were teeming with stunning floral arrangements.

The flower gardens provide a truly idyllic backdrop for photographs as you saunter through dozens of tulips, roses, hydrangeas and many more. We didn’t spend a great deal of time admiring the Flower Festival as Matt suffers from terrible hay-fever, but it was still nice to get a glimpse of it!

Golden Bridge Sun World Ba Na Hills Vietnam

Bonus things to see/do at Sun World & Golden Bridge

There really is so much to see and do at Sun World Ba Na Hills and even though we were there for 6+ hours, we still didn’t do absolutely everything at the park! I’ve included a few more bonus things to see and do at Sun World in case you want to pack as much as you possibly can into your time there.

  • Buffet lunch at Arapang restaurant (this was included in our tour ticket and it’s one of the biggest buffets I’ve ever been to!)
  • Wax Statue Museum
  • Halloween Festival (seasonal, obviously!)
  • Winter Festival (again, seasonal!)
  • Ba Na Funicular
  • Debay Wine Cellar (built by the French in 1923 – it’s pretty cool to see)
