doxford barns farmhouse lodge - where to stay in northumberland

I can’t begin to tell you how happy and excited I am to be writing blog posts like this again. After the on-and-off-ness of the last year or so, my blog has looked pretty bare when it comes to hotel, Airbnb and restaurant reviews, so the fact that I can finally start sharing proper travel-related posts again, feels so good!

Today’s post is all about the lovely Doxford Barns Farmhouse Lodge Airbnb that we stayed in a couple of weeks ago on our first trip to Northumberland. It felt so incredible to be out exploring again, and while Northumberland is only two hours away from us, it was still wonderful to be enjoying adventures in a new place.

The Farmhouse Lodge that we stayed in at Doxford Barns is set upon the impressive 550-acre grounds of Doxford Farm, just outside of Alnwick. The estate is also home to the beautiful Doxford Barns wedding venue which was unfortunately still closed due to Covid when we visited, but we did get the chance to have a little peak in through the window and it seems like the most gorgeous place for a wedding!

It’s only a 15-minute drive from Alnwick, but the drive there does take you down some very muddy and windy roads, so this is definitely something to bear in mind when getting around Northumberland; it will be much easier to access if you have your own car or mode of transport.

The Lodge is nestled away behind the Farmhouse at Doxford Barns and the outside looks like a proper countryside building; it’s so beautiful and authentic and it really feels like you’re so far removed from busy city life.

Upon entrance to the Lodge, you’re greeted by a fairly spacious lounge area, complete with a sofa, a huge TV mounted to the wall, a coffee table and a few homely amenities such as a kettle, toaster and mini fridge.

The decor might not be to everyone’s taste, but I thought it showed a real keen eye for interior design and the owners of the property clearly know what their guests need/want. The sofa was more than comfortable, especially with the chaise element of it; it meant that you could comfortably lay back and watch the TV!

The wall-mounted 4K television also had the option to log into your Amazon or Netflix account, so on the evening after we’d had two incredibly busy days exploring Northumberland, it was so nice to be able to watch mindless shows on Netflix as we unwinded for the evening.

One incredibly special and thoughtful touch that the hosts had gone to the effort to provide was a loaf of bread, plenty of tea and coffee sachets, jams and marmalade, milk and even two cans of G&T in the fridge! Little touches like this when you’re staying in an Airbnb really don’t go amiss for me; it’s things like this that make Airbnb stays feel much more homely and welcoming and definitely more personable than staying in a hotel.

To the right of the living area, as you enter the property, there’s a door to the bedroom and while it’s not the biggest in terms of size, it packs a punch when it comes to homely comforts. The king-sized bed is unfathomably comfy and the pillows and duvet felt like proper hotel bedding (an advantage I’d nearly always give to hotels in the Airbnb vs hotel debate!).

There was also an ironing board and iron, as well as a hairdryer and huge towels so that you can happily and easily get ready for a day of exploring Northumberland, without worrying about packing everything into your bag to bring with you – it’s already there waiting!

To the other side of the living room, there is a huge bathroom, complete with a very respectably-sized walk-in shower. The hosts had also provided numerous toiletries that would easily last a good few days amongst two guests, including luxurious body and hand cream. There’s also ample cupboard space to put your things away if you were staying for a little while, but we didn’t really need to make much use of this.

The shower itself wasn’t the most powerful, but it certainly wasn’t bad at all, and it more than made up for this with regard to the temperature. After getting soaked through during the day, coming back to this hot shower was like visiting a spa! One thing that I also liked about the bathroom was that the hosts provided us with ample toilet paper. While it might seem a little strange to comment on the toilet paper situation, I’ve stayed in places for a week before where they’ve only given us one roll, so to have more than enough was a very nice touch for me!

When staying in countryside properties like this, especially in the UK when the weather can be incredibly temperamental, I’m always a bit worried that I’ll get cold, even inside the property, but that certainly wasn’t the case here. The central heating system at the Farmhouse Lodge was incredible, and after a long day out in the pouring rain exploring Northumberland, it was absolutely heavenly to arrive back at the Lodge to find it toasty warm.

The Lodge also has free Wi-Fi that worked remarkably well and despite being on a working farm, we found it to be very unexpectedly quiet, which was a definite bonus!

Overall, I couldn’t recommend Doxford Barns Farmhouse Lodge enough. If you’re looking for a lovely place to stay in Northumberland that’s in a great location to go out and see everything in the county/along the coast, then this is the place to be!
