Greece

In the summer of 2018, Matt and I spent just 48 hours in Corfu, Greece.

Our last-minute minibreak to Corfu for 2 days came about after our holiday to Germany was cancelled a few weeks later, but we were still determined to get away for a couple of days before the end of the summer, so an impromptu 48 hours in Corfu was our solution!

You can definitely spend more than two days in Corfu; I’d probably recommend 3 or 4 days to ensure that you experience the best things to do in Corfu, but our 2 days on this beautiful Greek island were still super fun and memorable!

If you’re wondering how to make the most out of your 2 day Corfu itinerary, check out my post below to see what we got up to!

How to get to Corfu

sunsets in Greece

We flew from Manchester Airport to Corfu on Friday lunchtime, with the flight taking just over three hours and then took a half-hour taxi ride to the Golden Sunset Hotel in Boukari. Our flights cost around £300 return for both of us and the hotel was around £80 per night for two.

While it was pretty steep for just two short days away, it was entirely worth it for the whole experience and I wouldn’t hesitate to do it again!

Where to stay in Corfu

hotels in Greece

We stayed at the Golden Sunset Hotel for 2 nights in Corfu and I genuinely teared up when we got out of the taxi and looked around at our surroundings; the hotel was set just a few metres higher than the remarkably quiet road and directly across the road was the most beautiful view of the sunset – it’s clear to see why it’s called Golden Sunset hotel!

48 hours in Corfu might not seem like a long time, but just one look at that perfect sunset was more than enough to convince me it was well worth spending just two days in Corfu!

We arrived at the hotel just after 8 pm local time, just as the sun was setting across the ocean and I really can’t begin to tell you just how glorious that view was. The gentle waves lapping against the shore and the sun casting picturesque shadows over the ocean was a sight that I’ll absolutely never forget.

We were greeted at the hotel by the family who runs Golden Sunset and they were unbelievably friendly, and accommodating and spoke perfect English – something that always reminds me just how ignorant we Brits are that we never bother to properly learn another language!

After being escorted to our room by the hotel manager and his adorable little nephew, we were left alone to admire the beauty of where we were staying.

Our room was incredibly spacious, remarkably clean and had one of the most spectacular views over the sea. Huge doors opened up onto our own private balcony that was equipped with a small table and chairs; perfect for diving into a game of cards while taking in the view.

The beds were comfy, there was ample wardrobe and desk space and the bathroom was small but ideal for what we needed. The room was fully equipped with a lush air conditioning system that was an absolute must in the 30ºC+ heat and we were eternally grateful for the refreshing, cool air otherwise I fear we may have passed out!

The Golden Sunset Hotel also has a lovely swimming pool area with views over the ocean and plenty of sun loungers for guests at the hotel and visitors to enjoy. It was a shame that we didn’t actually get to spend any time in the pool but with our visit to Corfu being so short, we decided against spending a couple of hours just lounging in the sun; I’d definitely love to head back one day though and make use of all the facilities!

After a brief change and a quick freshen-up, we headed back downstairs to the main hotel for dinner. The Golden Sunset Hotel has a stunning dining area that resides right on the seafront, with unparalleled views of the stony beach and ocean.

We both opted for a delicious sex-on-the-beach cocktail and toasted our very spontaneous getaway; we then ordered food and revelled in the stunning location of our surroundings.

I have to be honest; the food itself wasn’t necessarily the best we’d ever had but the drinks, the company and the beautiful scenery made for such a wonderful evening.

For starters, we decided to share the garlic bread which, for someone who adores garlic bread as much as I do, really didn’t live up to my expectations. It was a little too crispy (burnt) and the garlic wasn’t really evenly distributed enough; it just lacked that special something that makes garlic bread my favourite thing in the world!

As for our main courses, Matt chose the veal in a white wine sauce accompanied by chips and rice. He said it wasn’t the best meal he’s ever had but it certainly wasn’t the worst; the sauce paired perfectly with the meat and sides and everything was cooked wonderfully, it just seemed to lack that extra bit of ‘wow’ factor.

My main course of choice was the chicken schnitzel which was incredibly simple but equally yummy. The chicken was slightly overcooked and the breadcrumb coating was a little crispy but paired with the chips and side salad, it was a dish that I certainly could have eaten again at the Golden Sunset hotel.

After dinner, we headed back up to our gorgeous room for an hour of playing cards on our balcony and then we climbed into bed for an early night in preparation for the next day’s antics!

Waking up early for the start of breakfast, we stuffed our faces with various bread, cheese and meat in order to fuel our bodies for the day ahead. Breakfast was served in the gorgeous canopied area of the hotel, with lush sea views sprawling out in front of us.

Booze cruise with Party Hard Travel – 2 day Corfu itinerary

Our first (and only) day in Corfu was without a doubt one of the best days of my life. We went on a ‘booze cruise’ with Party Hard Travel which saw us embark on a seven-hour boat trip with 60 other people from Kavos.

It was an experience, to say the least, and it was one of the most fun days we’ve ever had (and we’ve had a lot of fun in our seven years together so far!).

The booze cruise cost around £40 per person and included a seven-hour excursion sailing around Corfu as well as many other little islands. The price of the cruise included food but not drink, so make sure you bring plenty of cash as drinks don’t come cheap at €5 a pop!

After around an hour of sailing across the lush blue ocean, we made a stop on a private beach to fuel ourselves with yummy barbecue food in preparation for a full day of drinking on the boat! The BBQ food itself was pretty simplistic; with the choice of pork kebabs, a small chicken schnitzel, a slice of bread and a helping of tzatziki. It wasn’t the most gourmet food in the world but it certainly filled a hole while we sunned ourselves on the private beach.

There was also the opportunity to take part in various water sports activities such as jet skiing and the boat was kept open at all times for those who wanted to replenish their alcoholic beverages!

We spent an hour on the beach, relaxing and enjoying our food and drink, as well as the beatific scenery and it really was the calm before the storm as once we headed back onto the boat, the fun really started!

After a couple more hours sailing through the stunning sea and passing various little islands that Matt and I are determined to own one day, we arrived at one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen; the Blue Lagoon.

It really was one of the most stunning places and I could barely believe my eyes that we were actually there! The boat parked up close to the shore and everyone on the boat was given the opportunity to jump into the luscious water for a refreshing swim.

It was the most perfect, clear water I’ve ever swam in and the whole area was truly magical and romantic; I’m tearing up now just thinking about how idyllic it was!

After everyone had enjoyed frolicking in the sea for a while, we all jumped back on the boat and a number of ~party~ games began doing their rounds, AKA the boat party’s own version of Mr and Mrs. It was absolutely hilarious to watch the games unfold but it was a shame to see some people get carried away; one person even tried to throw the captain overboard!

With the cheesy dance music blaring through the DJ decks, the salty sea breeze in our hair and the gloriously warm sun on our skins, the boat party event was something I’ll never, ever forget.

The last stop on our booze cruise was in a ‘rave cave’ whereby everyone on the lower deck was given a handful of colourful powder that was to be thrown into the air once we reached the cave’s entrance. It was an absolutely incredible sight to behold and one that I’m not likely to forget anytime soon; the whole boat was positively buzzing and every single person had a huge smile on their face!

The journey back to Kavos featured a plethora of cheesy pop songs, including throwbacks to the 90s and noughties, as well as special renditions of the Grease soundtrack; it was unbearably corny but it really was some of the most fun I’d ever had!

Our evening in Kavos was quite a messy one as once we disembarked from the boat, we headed to a few bars with some of the people we met on the boat for an evening of drinking, gossiping and playing pool. It was absolutely one of the best days of both our lives and I couldn’t recommend taking part in a booze cruise enough!

Corfu Old Town – 2 day Corfu itinerary

The next day we were awoken by the hotel staff informing us that our taxi had arrived so we made a swift exit from our room and headed into the Old Town of Corfu to make the most out of our day.

Feeling ever so slightly hungover, we made our way through the beautiful streets, admiring the gorgeous architecture and stocking up on plenty of (non-alcoholic) fluids as it was remarkably hot. We made a stop at a cute little restaurant where we indulged in Gyros and a plate of chips – well Matt did; I was far too ill to stomach anything.

It turns out I had contracted some sort of stomach bug – either from the water in Greece or something I’d eaten – so I felt slightly less guilty about feeling hungover as my feeling ill massively outweighed the hungover headache!

Greece

The sickly feeling subsided for a few hours in the early afternoon, so we decided to make the most out of our last few hours on the beatific island and went for a swim in the sea right next to the Old Town. The water was absolutely delicious and the sun felt so amazing on our skin; there really is no feeling like basking in the most glorious sunshine.

We then made our way up to the Old Fortress of Corfu which offered exquisite views across the harbour and the small moat surrounding it. I really wasn’t feeling too good at all at this point so I feel that I maybe didn’t appreciate it quite as much as I should have but I can certainly attest to its beauty and remarkable history.

Our flight home wasn’t until 9 pm so after a little more wandering around the town and picking up some souvenirs, we made our way to the airport where I slept the entire time until our flight took off!

Even though we only had 48 hours in Corfu, we truly had the most incredible time and I would love to head back there again one day; it’s also given my obsession with Greece even more meaning and now I can’t wait to explore more of the Greek Islands!
