My ‘Before I Go Travelling Bucket List’

before i go travelling

I think I always knew at some point in my life that I’d go travelling. Whether it was just for one intense month, or an entire year of soaking up everything that the world has to offer.

While I’m so unbelievably excited to embark upon our trip at the end of April, I do still have a few worries and reservations that I’m trying to work through.

Things like the fact I’m not going to see my friends and family for an indefinite period of time, worrying about running out of money, meeting new people as well as all the responsibilities that we’ll have to face. However, after talking to my dad, he’s helped me to put my reservations aside and concentrate on the amazing experiences that we’re going to have.

Before we actually travel anywhere however, there are a few things that I want to tick off my ‘bucket list’. Here’s an extensive list of all the things I want to do before I go travelling, including numerous goals and personal achievements!

before i go travelling

Before I go travelling…

I want to be able to run 5K

This may seem like such a remarkably low achievement for many people, but as someone who hasn’t exercised since year nine P.E (no joke), I have a feeling that this is going to be a pretty big achievement.

I don’t really want to do it for any other reason than to say that I can run 5K. It’ll also be an awesome way to drastically improve my fitness levels before we go travelling as I imagine I’m going to need a fair bit of stamina when it comes to hiking, climbing and diving!

I want to spend so much time with my loved ones

This is something that has actually been causing me quite a lot of anxiety in recent weeks; the fact that when we go travelling, I don’t know who or what I might come home to.

It’s such an awfully morbid thought but I’m well aware that people such as my grandparents are getting older and won’t be around forever. When I think of that, it makes me so apprehensive about going away for a long period of time.

However, I’ve come to realise that you really can’t predict the future, but you also can’t sit around and worry about it either.

With that in mind however, I’m determined to spend the next three and a bit months with as many family members and close friends as possible.

I want to make sure I really cherish the time spent together, whether it’s a coffee date with my grandma, a wine and movie night with my parents, or spending quality time with my gorgeous godson, I want to make plenty of memories that I’ll be able to remember while we’re on the road.

I want to read as many travel books as I can

While it can often be a great thing to not plan and just ‘wing it’, I do like to have a bit of an idea in my head of the things that I want to do on a trip; and as this is going to be quite a long trip, I want to make sure I’m as knowledgable as possible about the world before I go travelling.

I received a vast variety of travel books for Christmas which are all packed full of wonderful tips, eating recommendations and some of the best places in the world to visit so I want to make sure I’ve read a good portion of these before I go travelling.

I want to get much fitter and healthier

Similarly to the idea of being able to run 5K before I go travelling, I also want to get into a much better routine eating and health-wise.

I don’t particularly have a bad diet, but it certainly could be a whole lot better so in the next few months I want to work hard at eating much better for my body.

I’ve talked a lot about my relationship with food on my blog before and so I really want to make sure I start branching out with the food I eat as well. We’ll be travelling to some fairly exotic places with wondrous cuisines and I don’t want to arrive there and experience a huge culture shock, simply because I’m not a fan of spicy curries!

Over the next few months, I want to train my palate to become more accustomed to different flavours, ingredients and spices so that I can thoroughly enjoy the food when we go travelling.

I’d love to work with more travel brands

In terms of more career-orientated goals, I really want to try and work with a number of travel brands before I go travelling. While I’ve been so unbelievably lucky to work with some incredible brands in the past, I really want to focus on trying to work with more travel related brands.

It would be awesome to try and squeeze in a press trip before I go travelling and to secure some incredible collaborations with travel brands that I genuinely love, use and recommend. Watch this space…

I want to have regular clear-outs and declutter often

Another thing that I want to work on before I go travelling is my ability to declutter and get rid of any ‘unnecessary’ things in my life.

Whether it’s junk that I’ve accumulated over the years, clearing out my wardrobe to perfect an ideal travel closet, or simply on social media; I want to make sure I make the time to regularly clear out any ‘life’ mess.

I think this will come in extremely handy in preparing for our trip around the world as we’re literally only taking one backpack each, so all of our worldly possessions will have to be able to fit into one small bag.

By clearing out unwanted items and belongings regularly over the next few months, I’m hoping that I’ll be able to pack my bag much easier when the time comes as I won’t have to worry about getting rid of loads of stuff in one go!

I want to enjoy the next three and a bit months as much as possible!

And finally, I want to enjoy my time in the UK as much as possible before I go travelling. England has been my home for the last (almost) 21 years (excluding a nine month stint in New Zealand!) so I want to enjoy everything that it has to offer before I explore more of the world.

I’d love to try and squeeze a few day or weekend trips in around the UK before we go, and of course I’m determined to spend as much time as possible with my loved ones before we head off.

The next three months are sure to be a whirlwind rollercoaster of emotions; from excitement to nerves to apprehension to full blown giddiness! I can’t wait to go travelling but I also can’t wait to make the most of my ‘before I go travelling bucket list’!

I’d love to travel but have the same worries with you so prefer to label myself as a holiday maker now instead haha! I’m sure you’ll have the most amazing time and I can’t wait to follow it through your posts! This is a really good list and I think that having clear outs and decluttering is a good practical one to get used to living with a little less stuff too!

This is such an original idea! I love the idea of the “at home” bucket list. I hope you manage to get all of this done before your big adventure. I totally understand your worries about the who or what you might come home too. I’ve never traveled but this causes me anxiety too. But like you said, you can’t sit around and worry about something that MIGHT NOT happen. And you gotta live your life for you 🙂 xxx

This sounds so exciting travelling. Is one thing I always wanted to do, hopefully once nursery payments stop (they are ridiculous amount) we can look at travelling with the kids. I want them to be travel savvy eventually. I can understand with the anxiety and relatives but they will love hearing of your trips. I hope you have a fantastic time

OMG you’re going to have so much fun! I understand the anxiety of feeling like you need to spend a lot of time with your loved ones (especially those who are getting older), but keep in mind that they want you to have these experiences and live your life. Go out there and get it!

Thank you! This is definitely something I need to keep reminding myself x

This is such a lovely blog post, I sometimes don’t think about the people I’m leaving behind, although I’ve never gone away for longer than 3 weeks! Travelling and being away from your family can be scary, but think of all the things you will experience on your travels xxx

I’m so excited but it is quite a scary thought of possibly leaving people behind! Xx

Sounds like a good, doable list of things to do before setting out on such a long trip. I love the feeling of decluttering, but living off of one backpack for months stresses me out just thinking about it. Good luck with your goals!
