I’ve spoken quite a lot about my love for date night on my blog before and how much I love to spend some quality time with Matt. It always makes me so happy to be able to enjoy a good few hours delighting in each other’s company, talking about everything and anything.
However, I also firmly believe that in order to enjoy ‘date night’, you don’t necessarily have to spend it with your partner. I class ‘date night’ as time spent by myself watching Friends and drinking a delicious hot chocolate, catching up with friends who I haven’t seen in a long time or spending time with my amazing mum in a stunning London hotel…
Here’s why date night doesn’t just have to be with your partner, and what myself and my mum got up to on our ‘date night’ last week!
Since moving out almost two years ago, I don’t get to spend as much time with my mum as I’d like so when I realised I had an event to attend on the Saturday, I decided to make a weekend of it with my mum and we chose to stay at the beautiful London Marriott Kensington hotel. I’ve been lucky enough to stay in many Marriott hotels over the years and I’m delighted to say that this latest addition to my list didn’t disappoint!
My mum is one of my absolute favourite people in the entire world and spending time with her means so much to me. Whether we’re discussing the latest happenings on Coronation Street, talking about our love for all things beauty* or simply just chatting absolute crap over a glass (read: bottle) of wine, spending time with her is just the best.
Our hotel room at the London Marriott was truly stunning, with the interior of the room being just as grand and magnificent as the exterior of the hotel. It’s situated in a fab location in Kensington and the surrounding area is just amazing.
The room itself wasn’t the largest I’ve ever stayed in but as we were only spending the night there, it was more than comfortable. The bed was a superb king size, and sinking into the crisp white sheets was so lush after a busy week at work. As we arrived at the hotel fairly late on Friday night we decided to eat dinner in the restaurant of the hotel which was possibly the best choice we could have made as the food was incredible.
As it was almost 10pm by the time we sat down to eat, we were both pretty damn starving so we decided to order a starter to share, a main dish each and a dessert to share! It was an amazing choice of food on our part as we literally devoured every single thing!
Our starter was the ale braised beef ribs which tasted absolutely phenomenal. The beef was so succulent and tender and just melted in your mouth with each mouthful. The flavours were exquisite, and combined with the apple and sesame slaw, the dish was nothing short of amazing.
While we ate, and drank our (large) glasses of Sauvignon, we put the world to rights discussing everything that had been happening in our lives recently. I text my mum almost every single day but it was so nice to spend some quality one to one time with her away from everyone else. We celebrated me moving into my own place with Matt and she told me all the funny things that my younger brothers and sister had been up to recently. Date night with my mum is just the very best and I can’t think of anyone else I’d rather spend the evening chatting with.
For my main course I went for the beloved sirloin steak and fries with rocket which was so bloody good. I’m quite partial to a steak whenever I go out for a nice meal and I was pleased to discover that the London Marriott Kensington hotel’s offering lived up to my expectations. The steak was so juicy and flavoursome and the huge portion of chips were perfectly crisp; just how I like them! The accompanying peppercorn sauce and rocket salad completed the meal beautifully and I definitely wouldn’t hesitate to order this again!
My mum went for the grilled lamb chops but I didn’t quite manage to get a good enough photo of this before she tucked in! It’s safe to say however that she thoroughly enjoyed it and while the portion size wasn’t enormous, it was more than enough to fill her up alongside our delicious starter and dessert.
Our dessert was literally the dessert of champions; marinated British strawberries with cream and meringue. We were absolutely stuffed after our first two courses but we couldn’t resist ordering this British classic! The strawberries were so incredibly fresh and the cream and meringue complimented them beautifully. I don’t think I could have eaten this all by myself however as it was a huge portion for just one person; it was perfect for sharing though.
The time between our main course and dessert allowed us to chat even more, discussing how wonderful the hotel was and how nice it was to spend some mother and daughter time together. I’ll never, ever take my mum for granted and any ‘date night’ time I get to spend with her, I’ll always treasure it.
