A few days ago, Matt and I were invited to the recently opened branch of Humpit Hummus in York to try out their range of delicious vegan hummus and pita offerings.
I have to admit, I was a tad apprehensive as I’ve never really dabbled in vegan food, or even hummus for that matter but as soon as I looked at the menu, I knew it was something I really wanted to try out. Matt’s actually trying out a vegan lifestyle at the moment so he was already really intrigued to see what they had to offer.
Here’s what we had for a delicious lunch at Humpit Hummus last Saturday.
The restaurant was moderately busy when we arrived but we didn’t have to wait long to be served at the counter by one of the incredibly friendly members of staff.
We were told all about how the menu works and the different ways you can order your hummus and pita. There’s four main ‘dishes’ to choose from; the Humpit Classic, Filled Pita, Salad Bowl and Toppers, as well as plenty of extras to choose from.
I opted for the Humpit Classic, an exquisite concoction of chickpeas, parsley, olive oil, paprika, pickles and a fresh pita bread. It was presented beautifully and the vibrant colours really complimented each other; I couldn’t wait to tuck in!
Like I mentioned previously, I wasn’t too sure whether I’d like the ‘vegan-ness’ of it but it was bloody delicious. The hummus itself was wonderfully flavoursome and the falafel reminded me somewhat of a vegetarian meatball; it was so yummy!
The chickpeas were a pleasant surprise for me as I’d never tried them before and I wasn’t too sure about them at first but accompanied by the hummus, paprika and delicious mushrooms and onions, they were absolutely divine.
The pita was soft, light and fluffy and was served warm. It tasted incredible with the hummus dish and I felt that the whole meal went together perfectly.
Matt and I considered Humpit Hummus to be more of a place to stop off for a light snack but we were very much mistaken; we were incredibly full after our meal and it was the perfect lunch offering. Not too heavy but there was more than enough to satisfy our hungry appetites!
Matt’s pita of choice was the Filled Pita; a kebab-like offering stuffed with falafel, hummus, fresh salad, pickles and sauces.
The picture above doesn’t quite do it justice but the Filled Pita was enormous; hence our surprise at the portion sizes!
He said that the flavours worked wonderfully together, the falafel was delicious and the accompanying salad really made the flavours stand out. The Filled Pita is definitely a healthy (and delightful) alternative to a meaty kebab!
For our drinks we decided to try out the fresh lemonade and it was certainly a good choice; it was some of the best fresh lemonade I’ve ever tasted! The zesty lemon was incredibly moreish and ever so refreshing, perfect for a hot, summer day.
I can’t thank the staff at Humpit Hummus enough for introducing us to this wonderful vegan place in York and despite my apprehensiveness at first, all my doubts were completely eradicated as soon as I tried my first bite!
Humpit Hummus is the ideal place to visit if you’re looking for a yummy, healthy and cheap vegan meal. The pitas are extremely reasonably priced for the amount of food you get and the combination of the different flavours and textures make for an intoxicating meal! I really couldn’t recommend Humpit Hummus enough; the staff are lovely and friendly, the atmosphere has a really relaxed vibe to it and I think the food speaks for itself!
