I’ve made it no secret around these parts just how much travelling means to me and I’ve come to the conclusion that I really want to focus more on creating travel related content on I’m Just A Girl.
I’m aware that some of you may not want to see travel content all the time, and there will still be the odd smattering of beauty posts, but I really want to make this blog something that I truly love and combined with my passion for travelling, I believe that I’ll be able to achieve this.
Having said that, today’s post is all about the reasoning behind my adoration for travelling, and why you should be obsessed with travelling too!
Travelling has always been on my radar, ever since I was incredibly young. Whether it was a family holiday to Spain, a weekend in Filey or a Christmassy break at Center Parcs, visiting new places has always been incredibly special for me.
I think a lot of my obsession with travelling stems from my love for New York as ever since I was extremely young, I watched every film and TV show under the sun that was based in New York. I always knew I wanted to see more of the world and whether that meant a day trip to Leeds, or flying to the other side of the world, travelling for me was a way to not only see some truly sensational places, but it was also a way of allowing me to explore what I wanted from life.
When my parents moved us to New Zealand in 2011, I thought that life as I knew was over. And while I suppose it kind of was, I’ve never been more grateful to have that kind of experience in my entire life. Living in a new country showed me so much about the world, as well as so much about myself as a person.
I owe a lot of my amazing travel experiences to my mum and dad who’ve always taken us to beautiful places. From Dubai to New York to New Zealand, these travel experiences have helped shape who I am today and I couldn’t be more grateful.
Since being with Matt, my passion and obsession travelling has only intensified even further and it’s so amazing to be spending my life with someone who feels exactly the same as I do about seeing more of the world. We’re currently in the process of planning an around the world trip for sometime next year and I honestly couldn’t be more excited.
In the short couple of years we’ve been together, Matt and I have been on seven holidays together, as well as a number of individual trips thrown into the mix too. I feel insanely lucky every single day that I get to explore the world with my best friend and there’s so many reasons why I think you guys should travel more and why you should be obsessed with travelling too.
Travelling helps to build character and improves your confidence
When you’re stood in an airport in an entirely new country and you speak very little of the language and you’ve no idea where you’re going or what you’re doing, it can be a little overwhelming.
However, I truly believe that travelling helps to build character as you’re often put in situations where you may not be in your comfort zone; it teaches you how to deal with tricky situations which is only a good thing.
You experience a whole new culture
When we moved to New Zealand, it was a culture shock like no other and while it was pretty overwhelming at times, it’s made me so thankful that I’ve been able to experience a whole new way of life.
Different cultures can teach you so much about the world around you and you can learn so much about a place and its inhabitants by spending just a few days there.
You’ll get to try out new (and delicious) cuisines
One of my favourite things about travelling somewhere new is the variety of different dishes I know I’ll get to try out. Whether it’s traditional Italian pizzas in Venice, macarons in Paris or tapas in Spain, trying out new foods is definitely one of the best things about travelling.
You’ll never regret it
Travelling, in my opinion, is one of the very few ‘adult’ things that you’ll absolutely never regret doing. Buying a house can wait, getting your degree can wait and buying the latest Urban Decay palette can wait, but travelling shouldn’t be something that you should ever wait for.
If you have the chance to do it, and the means of paying your way around the world then you should do it at the first chance you get. I absolutely guarantee you’ll enjoy a weekend in Budapest more than you’ll enjoy a night out at the pub, so don’t put it off!
Travelling helps you to develop new skills
Before I moved to New Zealand, I had no idea that I’d be able to climb a mountain. Before I visted New York, I had no idea I’d be able to walk over 30,000 steps in a day. Before I went to Dubai, I had no idea that I’d be able to scuba dive.
My point it, unless you try it out, you’ll never know what you’re capable of and travelling helps you to develop skills that you didn’t ever think you’d possess.
You may even learn a new language, and even if it’s just a few phrases you’re already more interesting than the people next door who’ve never ventured out of their home town.
You might meet new people
There’s so many people I know who have made lifelong friends while they’ve been on holiday and I think that’s one of the most amazing things. My grandparents for example, met their best friends one year while on holiday and now they go on holiday every single year with them despite them living far away.
Travelling gives you amazing stories to tell people back home
You don’t have had to have trekked through the Amazon jungle to have an epic story to return home with. Sometimes, even the smallest trips provide us with the most incredible stories.
There’s been so many things that have happened while I’ve been in new places and I’ve made memories that I’ll treasure forever.
